I want to dress like Mary Poppins

Or Mrs Coulter in the BBC adaptation. Waisted, firm tailoring in good quality, lux materials and luscious, jewelled colours. Perhaps with a little mini cape. Any suggestions?

Lindy bop might have similar shapes, but I'll wait for the real experts to come along!

Hmm, I think you’d need to tone the Mary Poppins look down a bit for everyday wear.

Hobbs used to have some similar looks so might be a good starting point for more formal stuff

Nancy Mac.

This is really where you have to go to vintage shops, esp for high quality fabrics.

TiredyMcTired · 24/02/2020 07:41

How about this one? www.joebrowns.co.uk/elegant-jacquard-coat-wj318#colour=193
Joe Browns have a bit of a vintage look.
Shopping for real vintage may get you much closer to what you want.

Dozer · 24/02/2020 07:44

Vintage only works for small sizes.

Availability above 8/10 limited.

This is very Mrs Coulter www.lindybop.co.uk/beverly-emerald-pencil-dress-and-jacket-twin-set.html

Also, I know a couple of people who like to dress in a vintage style, they buy patterns online or at craft fairs and either make their own or get a dressmaker to do pieces for them

Collectif also worth a look. Clothes not brilliant quality but their sale prices are very cheap.

This one has a removable cape so that when you’ve recovered from your Poppins fixation it’s still wearable.

(The other advantage of Collectif is that they have physical shops so you’re not at the mercy of internet sizing and quality guesses - DD is a huge fan so I’ve spent a lot of time hanging around their shops).

And there’s a code on that Lindybop outfit today.

I have a Jolie Moi coat which has a very Mary Poppins silhouette - button front, nipped in waist and full skirt. The material is definitely more spring weight though.

ghislaine · 24/02/2020 09:18

You could also try a search for Edwardian or Gibson Girl fashion on Etsy or notonthehighstreet. I just found a seller called Romlya making Edwardian style full length gored skirts on Etsy.

YouWereRight · 24/02/2020 11:05

Have you considered making your own? There are lots of great patterns with that kind of vibe. Bernadette Banner on insta and YouTube has some great looks too.

FloraGreysteel · 24/02/2020 14:13

Search for " Laura Ashley velvet" on eBay has lots of suitable things!
