What to wear with leather-look leggings

I've seen the Next and ASOS ones recommended a lot on here and I've loved the look from afar...but I can't quite figure out what people actually wear with leather-look leggings? Does it always have to be long tops (ie covering my bum)?

I'm 32. Petite, size 8, if it makes a difference

Big knitwear and boots/white trainers for day, camisole and velvet blazer with heels/boots in this weather for evening.

Personally I like them dressed down and wear mine with trainers and a black or grey slouchy cashmere jumper or an over sized white shirt.
I just think they can look a bit much with heels and dressed up but that said I'm not 32 or a size 8 so I'm sure you would rock them.

I’m 31 and a size 8/10! I agree with the paired down look with trainers.. I Have quite a chunky white CK trainer they look good with. But I do wear them on nights out..say with a wrap over blouse (not long, not covering my bottom!) or a bit of an oversized shirt (topshop/Zara). And my barely there heels or a chunky silver mule .. mine finish on the ankle so look fine with more of a sandal. They’re actually a bit of a go to for me so I’ll wear them with lots of things - even my Christmas jumper!

I think the length of top is dictated by your bodyshape and proportions, and also the quality of the leggings. Personally I think all leggings (outside of gym and sports activities) should be worn with bum covering tops, but they don't have to be tunic/mid thigh length. In fact I think its more current for the length to be just bum covering, maybe a couple of tops layered, say a white t shirt under a thin merino crew neck, with the t shirt slightly longer.

I just put in Pinterest "leather legging outfit" and a whole range of different options came up, different length tops, different shoes, coats etc. Have a look.

Hmm thanks all!
Maybe I'm just looking at the wrong tops..I can only ever find long tunic type things (which drown me, as I'm pretty short) it short/crop tops!

@troppibambini can I ask where are you getting your slouchy cashmere jumpers from??

Do these faux leather leggings not make you sweat though? I like the look of them, but would be worried about breathability!

MurrayTheMonk · 11/02/2020 11:18

I wear mine all the time. With a big jumper and trainers in the day, and with a fine knit jumper or a longer shirt and heeled boots in the evening.
I don't have the arse to wear something that doesn't cover it up.

I get lots of my longer tops, and also jumpers from SilkFred...

HundredMilesAnHour · 11/02/2020 13:36

Unlike everyone else on this thread, I wouldn't dream of wearing my leggings in the evening, especially not with heels. I think it's very dated look, sorry!

I wear my daytime when I'm dressed down (so for running errands etc), with trainers and a loose T-shirt or jumper.

I personally don't like the Next ones (the coating rubs off them and goes patchy) but have just got some fab thermal lined ones from Calzedonia. I wear them with white trainers/black Vans and a chunky knit in the day (Jigsaw, Hush). In the evening, I'd wear them with a blazer and cami or a 'rock' tee (I have a fab Blondie one off Amazon) and leopard heels. Also Topshop is good for shirts/blouses to wear with them. I'm 48 and a size 8/10 straight up and down. I have a good arse from lots of exercise Grin

@Stumpedasatree - they don't make me sweat. In fact, I find them quite cold, hence why I bought the thermal ones!

troppibambini · 11/02/2020 15:36

@livingoffcoffee I get them from Uniqlo they are reasonably priced and pretty indestructible I accidentally washed one at 40 degrees and tumble dried it and it survived.

Squirrelpeanutbutter · 11/02/2020 15:40

Over trousers Grin

I got a pair in the ASOS sale. Love them. Wear with wedge trainers or heeled boots mainly. Might wear them with heels if I fancy it - if it’s good enough for VB... Generally a tee and blazer type jacket or a big jumper on top

twinkledag · 11/02/2020 18:14

I wear mine in the evening with a black cami, blazer and barely there block heels.

During the day with a big chunky jumper from New Look and trainers.
