Help with dry, shedding hair before I cut it all off!

I've lost 10kg in 5mths, but 2mths ago I started shedding hair like a moulting dog! Thyroid, iron & all tests are normal. By facial skin is also now super dry. Dr suggested it was the weight loss and stress (although don't feel stressed at all!) I eat a very balanced diet, fish, avocados, nuts, lots of veg etc. Hair isnt patchy like alopecia and bald, but seems to be coming evenly from all over.

Shedding is subsiding slightly, but hair feels like straw and very knotty- what can I use/do?

About ten years ago I lost about 3 stone and my hair shed for about 5 months. It was awful but once it stopped, it returned to normal remarkably fast. Don't lose hope it will be the weight loss x

A Coconut oil treatment may help? Maybe a few if its really bad

bettybea · 04/02/2020 17:42

Try the Wells Fusion shampoo and Masque. Is a salon one but can get the big bottles online reasonably cheaply. Has stopped my brittle hair breakage no end.

bettybea · 04/02/2020 17:43

Wella even

Elouera · 04/02/2020 18:36

Thanks for the ideas. I'll look the wella fusion one up.

@Hoppetyflop- is it just coconut oil you put in your hair and wash out, or a specific treatment?

I was going to say coconut oil too. Just shove it in your hair overnight (towel down to protect pillow obviously), shampoo in hair before you put it under water, then wet and reshampoo and condition normally. My hairdresser recommended it, and I try to do it once a week. Massively helped my hair.

It’s pricy but the Kerastase Reflection Masque Chromatique is genuinely life changing for me.

I have dry/highlighted/fine/broken hair and this product makes it look and feel smooth, soft and shiny. It just transforms my straw like/knotty hair.

Even my hairdresser commented on how healthy it looks

Elouera · 04/02/2020 19:41

@OhLookHeKickedTheBall: is that just coconut oil as in the cooking type of coconut oil?

I'll also look the reflection masque up too. thanks everyone.

Aussie 3 minute miracle is really good , I used it when my hair was very dry
I was given liz Earle shampoo and conditioner at Christmas and I really like it . See if they do one for dry hair

dudsville · 04/02/2020 19:47

Expensive but I'm a recent convert to the Philip Kingsley elasticer hair mask. I even use the extreme which is designed for afro hair and I have white middle aged salt and pepper hair. I also find that aveda dry remedy shampoo and conditioner makes a great difference.

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 04/02/2020 19:55

elouera yes, just normal coconut oil that you can grab from a supermarket. Saved a fortune on treatments.

My bet would be you are vit D deficient. Had same problem when my level was 39 last March.

mnthrowaway202020 · 04/02/2020 21:34

To the contrary, my vitamin d levels were much lower than that (around 10) but it had no impact on my hair (nor did taking supplements & getting to a healthy level). At the time my hair was lovely - long, thick and healthy.

I did notice when my ferritin levels were low, my hair grew very slowly. I could go 12+ weeks between retouching my roots (bleach blonde) and after raising my level, I can’t go more than 8 weeks without my hair looking awful from the regrowth.

Elouera · 04/02/2020 21:40

Several years ago my Vit D level was indeed low, but I've been taking supplements for ages. I use a semi-hair colour, but my hair seems to be growing very quickly, despite the now sudden dryness/knots/shedding etc. I need a colour ever 4 weeks, if not sooner, before I have noticeable regrowth!
