Can someone explain Toast to me?

I'm reading an article in the Telegraph, a man's story about going transgender, and he talked about wearing a Toast skirt.

I have never owned anything from Toast and have seen it in Peter Jones and not understood why people like it. I went on their site today and it all looks awful. It looks aggressively unattractive to me - I don't get it!

Not being disingenuous - please can someone explain the appeal as I am honestly interested.

I used to love their prints and silks and archive sales which were very feminine. But now the cut and fabric are for really skinny Gwyneth Paltrow types and don't suit me. The models look fabulous and comfortable but when I try the clothes they look shapeless and the cut and fabric make me feel fat. So I've given up on them sadly.

Never heard of toast. Seems to be very middle aged clothes ...

Floisme · 26/01/2020 10:52

One thing that does annoy me about them is that they give off this faux arty, anti-materialist vibe and, from their website and catalogue, you'd think they operated from a farmhouse in the middle of nowhere, but they haven't been independent for a long time. French Connection owned them for a while and I think they were recently sold to a Scandi company.

What the fuck are middle aged clothes?

Floisme · 26/01/2020 10:59

Oh I missed the middle aged jibe Grin
How predictable.
Admittedly the clothes, being mostly natural fabrics and well made, are kind to bodies that have lived a bit.

Most of the descriptions here make me laugh, even if they're not entirely complimentary. But you can fuck off with using 'middle aged' as an insult.

Toast clothes conjure up an image of an arty ,bohemian , intelligent , French intellectual!

Interesting about the real ownership Floisme. Isn’t that the way of most brands- build up an identity, appeal to consumers’ quest for something different and then sell to a multinational.

Just realised this was a zombie thread. But the points still stand.

I love Toast and have a few pieces. I live in NZ and we can order online but it’s $50 Australian which is exorbitant! The sizing is hugely unreliable so it’s an eye watering amount money if you need to return for another size.
I travel to Uk yearly but it’s not available in the North West.
I can only look at the website and dream!
