What to wear for lunchtime 'party'

Please help dear Style and Beauty gals!

So...I'm 47, short, slim-ish pear. Usually dress very casually and maybe not that age appropriate!! (jeans, DM boots or brogues, layered tees, sloppy cardis, denim pinafores, thick tights, short A-lines and thick tights... that kind of thing, pretty much the same style as I wore 30 years ago!)

HOWEVER...I need to look like a grown up for a lunchtime get together I've arranged for DPs birthday. Some of his friends DW are more 'glamorous' and I just feel all 'wrong'

Any suggestions about what I could wear please? I've got loads of heels - I love heels - just haven't worn them much as they're not practical for my work and I always seem to be at work, haha Grin Got loads of jeans.

Please help, I'm not very good at going out, I really worry about what to wear and it takes the fun out of it.

Thanks Smile

No expert op but my go to is cigarette pants, heels and a silky top.
Spend extra time doing your hair and makeup.

Have you got time to do a John Lewis personal shopping session? Take pics of your shoes before you go.

I think you should aim for at least 2 changes of shoes to get the wear out of these lovely heels you don't get the chance to wear ;)

LordOfTheWhys · 15/01/2020 07:35

Where is the get together and what's your budget?

Trewser · 15/01/2020 07:42

Where is it? I'd feel completely overdressed in heels and a strappy top at lunchtime. I'd wear a pair of jeans, flat leopard shoes and a slouchy batwing type top that I have plus jewellery .

How about jeans, heels, blazer and top - do your hair and makeup - "statement" piece of jewellery like big earrings or bracelet. I find blazers/jackets give me shape, but the fact that I'm wearing jeans makes it feel more laidback for lunchtime where a dress would make me feel too dressy/occasion-y.

I was coming on to say everything @DaydreamRedeemer has Smile

I'd also wear jeans and heels and a nice top. My go to is a sleeveless round neck silky type one.but whatever works for you. Then clearly hair and make up.

Can I follow this thread? I have similar issues, I've got an evening casual thing coming up where I think jeans will be ok, but my faded T-shirt's and sweatshirts won't Smile Where are people getting these silky/slouchy tops from? I like the idea of them but never seem to see anything like them anywhere.

Ps OP your style sounds lovely!

Smallnmighty · 15/01/2020 09:46

Thanks everyone Smile You've nailed it with the jeans/heels and silky top suggestions - I can definitely do that, plus statement jewellery etc.

Feeling so much better, thank you xx
