Can anyone recommend a blond box dye that works on hair with lots of natural orange in it.

Hi, my hair is light brown and everytime i've tried to dye my hair blonde, even dark blond, it has orange tones in it. I always aim for an ash shade but it still happens. Because my hair isn't that dark and is quite dry I really don't want to bleach it first. Can anyone recommend a mid blond home box dye that is genuinely an ash shade? The reason why I don't want to get it done professionally is due to cost unfortunately. Thanks Smile

I use a wella highlighter kit, it's a cap style, you could pull lots more hair through, i been useing it in between salon visits for around twenty years so I save some money,I have mousey colour hair, I do have to leave it on for 60 minutes, even though the box says no more than 50 minutes, it comes out ashy on me, if you do get it please do a strand test first as all hair is different.

In my experience box dyes often take the hair through an orange colour before reaching blonde, then on to white blonde. You might just need to leave it on a bit longer. I use Nice and Easy extra light ash blonde and leave it on 15 mins longer than the stated amount, it does say on the info sheet that extra light blonde shades may take longer to achieve.
If you leave it on too long and the ends go a slight blue/ grey/ purple shade, a hair mask of lemon juice mixed with conditioner is an excellent way to remove the grey/ blue/ purple. It’s saved my life a couple of times!

You could go to your local college if you can't afford a hairdressing appointment or if you know someone with a salon services card, the people who work there will tell you what you need and the ratios.

Hi, thanks for your replies. I think that highlights are the way to go so i'll have a look around Boots this week although i'd definitely consider trying a college in the future. I love the lemon hair mask idea too.

The only way to lighten your hair is to bleach it.
