Why is my middle-aged, mid length hair tangled?

I have just grown my hair a little longer than usual, pretty much shoulder length. It is cut regularly and I use shampoo, conditioner and then some kind of oil before blow-drying it. Why is it tangling so badly?

Small detail, but do you have particularly coarse pillowcases per chance?

Blow drying, dries it out.

Long hair is best left to dry naturally. Oil it lightly before brushing when dry.

@instapaints - no, they're not silk but they are good quality cotton ones.**@bingbangbing - sometimes I do let it dry naturally but then I do use a hot brush on it or it is unbearably wild and frizzy. Thanks both.

This sounds insane but do you shower with very hot water? If you do, I highly suggest rinsing it in cold water once you're done to 'seal' the hair to minimise frizziness. Also perhaps you could look into a once-a-week hair mask or something along those lines? Could help with hydration that would make your hair more manageable.

Mine always tangles badly at this time of year because of scarves and coats etc

ComeBackPeterComeBackPaul · 03/01/2020 21:44

I always finish my hair wash on cold as I heard it was supposed to give you glossier hair. Am a huge hat and scarf wearer in the winter. Am thinking of having a trim next week though as it does seem a bit rats tailish at the moment.

Mine goes all matted if I wear a coat with a furry collar or a scarf, it rubs and matts.

ComeBackPeterComeBackPaul · 03/01/2020 21:51

@TantricTwist I am a compulsive hat and scarf wearer at this time of year so maybe that is it. Matted is just the word!

How often do you wash it? I only need to wash once or twice a week, in winter... and middle age

I find good leave in conditioner helps too

Unite 7 seconds detangler is fantastic for this - it has untangled my constantly knotted frizzy hair.

Mine gets tangled by wool scarves, coats AND my necklace clasp at the nape of my neck.
