M&S velvet - would you risk a cold hand wash cycle on a dry clean only top?

I daren't even link to the old-lady item which you may all deride Grin but it says dry clean only and I am tempted to try the cold wash.

WWYD? Any velvet experts out there?

The only time I have washed a dry clean only item, the garment shrank a little and the lining hung out of the hems.

SteamedPotatoes · 20/12/2019 16:51

The delicate wash on cold will be fine.

Hmm, not such good news. Thanks...I have in the past been quite cavalier and successful in washing dry clean items but I'm unfamiliar with the habits of velvet.

Viscose velvet marks badly when wet, so I wouldn't risk it.

Betterversionofme · 20/12/2019 19:54

There are dry cleaning sachets that you put in a tumble dryer with whatever you need dry clean. As I don't have a tumble dryer anymore, I regularly wash dry clean only items in a washing machine. I ruined one coat but everything else works fine. I figured I will not take time and expense to dry clean, so if I can't do it at home, I don't want own it.

Doilooklikeatourist · 20/12/2019 20:00

I had a beautiful crushed velvet skirt from Monsoon , which I put in the machine on a delicate wash
Came out fine
I wore it a lot , because I knew I could wash it , and not spend money On dry cleaning
So , can’t answer the question , but I’d sling it in the machine with some woolite and give it a go

Oooooh, mixed opinions!

Not viscose. It shrinks really badly. Get a handheld steamers.

thenightsky · 21/12/2019 11:50

Viscose is a bastard for shrinking. I've washed cotton velvet successfully.

Jon6b · 21/12/2019 11:57

Handwash in the sink not the washing machine.

MollyAir · 22/12/2019 14:18

Thanks, those are really good ideas. I really cba to trek to the dry cleaners every time. I might do the sink thing, or the steam thing.
