What's the right length for wide leg trousers for a party?

I have a pair of black, very wide leg trousers with a high paper bag waist that I want to wear to a party. They feel slightly too long and flappy so I'm thinking about having them taken up. What's the right length for this sort of trousers? Cropped above the ankle or covering the shoes? They're currently covering my shoes but I don't want to look dated.

Next part of the question - what kind of shoes? Not a fan of heels but willing to wear them for a night out.

I think you can get away with either length for wide leg trousers, but I have seen some ankle grazing, wide leg, paperbag trousers which look nice. Although, they were more day wear.

I think it's up to you really and depends on what you like wearing. I think jeans tucked in to ankle boots can look a bit dated sometimes, but I think you have more flexibility with wide leg.

I'd go with brogues if you don't want big heels.

Not sure brogues to a party looks great.

Wide leg trousers can be ankle skimming or covering your shoes. Either is ok. I’ve just looked at a few on the Zara website and they are looong! Dress up on top and you cannot go wrong!

Either just above the ankle or shoe covering is fine, but either way you need a heel and ideally a skinny one.

Thanks! I do have some heels, I just tend not to wear them. I might pin the trousers and try a few looks. Good to know that neither option will automatically look odd!

There is no "right" length. I think what you're asking very much depends on proportions; between the width and length of the trousers and your body shape and height.

You don't necessarily need heels. I personally love the look of the attached blue trousers and ballet flat. A patent ballet shoe or something with some embellishment ( Boden do that sort of thing well) would elevate from a daytime office type shoe. Or a pointed toe or slingback.

The trousers with the grey coat are more cropped so I think you need to be tall to pull that off.

Of you could go Victoria Beckham style. This does need a heel and the hem needs to touch the floor. The thought of grubby hems and washing puts me off this look though, something I don't think Vicky B has to worry about!
