What do we wear in the gym now?

Just that really. Planning on returning to the gym after a looooong hiatus and it's occurred to me that I'll be 'that' overweight middle aged woman at the back in the crap outfit. I keep seeing these skintight leggings everywhere but they look terrifying 🤣

Some assistance would be very much appreciated!

Whatever you want. It’s the gym, no one is looking at what you are wearing.

Leggings and a vest here from TK Maxx.

I never see anyone not wearing leggings if I’m honest, and I think any excess fabric on something more like a pair of trousers would get in the way of exercising, though it depends what you’re planning on doing. You don’t have to be scared of leggings though! Personally I like to wear them with a longish top (to conceal any camel toe situation that may occur) and some sort of hoodie or sweatshirt which I take off once I’ve warmed up. I recently got a couple of tops and two pairs of leggings from Oysho, which were fairly pricey but I’ve been really impressed with the quality, the leggings in particular are lovely and thick. H&M is also good for affordable gym stuff. Honestly I’d just go and try on a few bits and see what you like.

I think it does matter what you wear to the gym in that you want to feel comfortable and confident. If you feel good you’ll be more likely to stick at it and keep going back (that’s how I justify it to myself anyway Grin)

I wear cropped leggings and a top that covers my bum

fluffygal · 12/11/2019 09:26

I wear shorts and a top- I get so hot when exercising I hate wearing leggings. Most people wear leggings though.

LilyAraminta · 12/11/2019 09:27

I think it's about what you feel nice in. I see the latest trends with the super high waist leggings and crop tops paired with huge trainers and I could NEVER feel good in that, much less comfortable enough to work out/be in public.
What works for me is a pair of black shorts (not skin tight but not baggy), a loose-fit tee shirt with a pretty/colorful sports bra underneath, and a ball cap. I like my legs, hate my tummy, and love anonymity.

Pick your favorite colors, wear what makes you feel comfy, and don't stress too much (a good playlist is key!).
Oh--the one specific tip I have is that the most universally flattering yoga pants I have ever worn/seen are Soybu bootcuts. Not necessarily on trend, but they fit well, look nice, and flatter most.

Decathlon have the best value/money ratio that I'm aware of.

You don't need to wear leggings. I wear trousers and they've never been a problem.

merryhouse · 12/11/2019 09:59

I think most of the women I see wear leggings, including the actual properly old ones. Either t-shirts or lycra shoulderless tops. I wear close shorts and a basic t-shirt. The men seem to wear those slightly flappy shorts (the ones with a net insert), with t-shirts, polo shirts or close lycra tops depending on how buff they are Grin

Thanks everyone perhaps I'll just bite the bullet and go for some leggings then!

I don't wear leggings. I have quite lose leg trousers in that wicking fabric. I wear the same stuff I wear to run in.

Pandaintheporridge · 12/11/2019 14:24

Loose.
I wouldn't go if I had to wear leggings tbh.
