Hair dye: from permanent at hairdressers to demi permanent box dye

My hair is thinning, probably age related and due to years of permanent colouring. The permanent dye colour is chestnut which is close to my natural, although the greys have now taken over.

I’m finding the dye fades quickly, goes a bit brassy, and I’m using touch up root spray after a week anyway to cover grey roots.

If I used a demi permanent box dye (no ammonia) in a light brown would that lighten my chestnut hair and cover the grey roots? I’m thinking the demi would be more effective than a semi.

No a box dye will not lighten the darker dyed hair. In order to lighten it you would need to use bleach or one of those hair colour removers
