Speaking of tweed, if anyone's a size 14 and doesn't look dreadful in raglan sleeves and double breasted coats, this one from Raey on eBay looks promising.

Well spotted! Sadly double-breasted and raglan sleeves are not my friends... it would be straight to Frumpville. Posh frock shop sale preview from Friday morning!

Redandblue11 · 23/12/2019 18:46

What a great coat Bo sadly not my size.
Elle I know, that can be a bit of an overwhelming feeling but hopefully not too long now.

Today’s advent is a look I like the idea of, not sure I have ever mastered that look tough... left me thinking...

Totes Amazing

No this is not a thinly veiled ad for the thread totes, but feel free to buy some if you want to clickety link code SANTA currently gets you 10% off sitewide Wink (promo is nothing to do with me).

Not really revealing anything new about the sudden popularity of canvas totes to this knowing audience here but it is interesting as it’s one of the few trends that’s trickled up rather than down. Arguably this is the Avant Minimal in action, with a single witty slogan only legible to the ‘right’ people or signalling of a specific shop or cultural venue/event, it is the perfect vehicle that allows that ‘illusion of restraint and balance that doesn't quite erase a suggestion of exclusive knowledge, of quietly showing off’.

And luxury brands are already capitalising on this and will do so further, because, capitalism. Bag sales have been dwindling steadily, consumers aren’t motivated to spend four-figure sums on the latest and greatest it-bag every season for quite some time now. Equally, those that carefully save up to buy one investment bag aren’t all that interested in spending it on a temporary design.

The prices have to drop but acknowledging that the current crop of bags are highly inflated, is, in essence, owning up to previous deceit. In strides canvas with a low and therefore accessible price point without damaging the existing stock. They’re going to have to be creative though, and designers will talk profusely about ‘rediscovering’ the quality of canvas because they have stiff competitions in the actually cheap and accessible totes without the designer badge. My money’s on Loewe and J.W. Anderson (the brand but also the person for both) to bring us something new and exiting here, it'll probably start with a logo though.

The designer badge will actively work against their potential success, luxury brands are global and only exclusive on financial grounds, not the exclusive message the Avant Minimal necessarily seeks, it’s the very opposite of quiet and knowing.

Going by the first few attempts it’ll be interesting to see how this evolves and, spoiler alert, Hedi Slimane’s canvas collection at Celine, lovely stiff pristine canvas that it is, is not exactly the ‘quiet and knowing’ aesthetic of the Avant Minimal. The blue and white netted bag under Phoebe Philo’s Celine does lead the charge and similarly the plastic bag. As unnecessary and slightly gimmicky as they felt at the time, suddenly they make sense, even plastic and branded.

Ultimately, ordinary totes, are likely to reign supreme for a while yet, their democratic and utilitarian qualities don’t really lend to upscaling by the luxury conglomerates. Crucially the USP luxury lacks here is that an ordinary tote is honest. Honest about what it is, honest about what it carries, and it gives an honest insight into the wearer like that their sense of humour is bought, a curated insight, but that’s the reality we live in now. So here’s to more totes and a totes amazing 2020.

Let us happily ship Morgan Freeman and Diane Keaton, secretly stalk Sarah Linh Tran, be delighted by adorable South Korean toddlers in imaginative outfits that put us adults to shame, relive the vintage pages of Vogue Paris while sashing about horrifying vegans in a gross display of lustrous leather.

Happy Christmas and a splendid 2020 my fellow Sainsbury’s baguettes Wine

Merry Christmas 🎄 to you too Bo and to all of you too.

Fantastic advent, what an ending!
I was saving myself for small a xmas gift to me and had already decided for it to be the tote.
Off to town now to get the last few bits, tonight I am planning to go full colour to the crib service with friends and kids then followed by mulled wine at local.

banivani · 24/12/2019 13:59

I fell of the internet for a while there and am now sitting in the sofa waiting for the Swedish tradition of Donald Duck and his friends on tv (don’t ask) and finally have caught up with the thread. Thank you so much Bo for this years AC, I loved it! Loved the dudettes, love the men in drapey things, love drapey things, love textures and sculptures, love Linh Tran!!!! I feel really inspired by all of this!

I wish everyone the best for Christmas and hope all your family behave well and that no food turns out just a bit disappointing. We have a full house tomorrow but today is quieter with just us five.

I bought the trousers btw, and I am going to buy myself a tote too! Happy Christmas! 🎄 🎄🎄🎄🎄

BloomedAgain · 24/12/2019 14:05

Merry Christmas! Xmas Smile

XingMing · 24/12/2019 16:19

Happy Christmas and a splendid 2020 to you all!

Floisme · 24/12/2019 19:05

bo thank you for an inspirational calendar that I'm sure I will return to many times in 2020.

Merry Christmas one and all Xmas Smile

ToEllewithIt · 24/12/2019 20:22

Thanks so much for another wonderful calendar. Truly the most wonderful time of the year.

Merry Christmas to all of you wonderful women. Thanks for the company, laughter, insights, wise words, witty observations and wonderful style this year and here’s to much more of the same in 2020.

ToEllewithIt · 24/12/2019 20:24

And the award for overuse of “wonderful” goes to ... I’ll blame it on the sherry - a lovely dry manzanilla!

quirkychick · 25/12/2019 18:36

Merry Christmas Xmas Grin. There are worse words to overuse, Elle.

Thank you, bo. I'm trying not to fall asleep after too much good food and champagne my dps bought us.

banivani · 26/12/2019 10:35

Happy St Stephen’s Day to everyone! Junior and I have watched two episodes of Lost in Space season 2 and are planning to get out of the house at one at the latest. Sitting indoors for two days does us no good, but we’ve had a good Christmas. He’s deflated now it’s over poor creature.

Attaching a pic of my SIL:s gorgeous vintage coat! Not a good photo, mind.

Ahhh, just had a lovely hour in the bath catching up. Started with Elle's beautiful green trench and ended with another beautiful green coat Bani (or rather your SIL's). And the advent calendar- what a treat. Really interesting inspiration and thoroughly enjoyed the thought provoking chat of what is 'flattering'.

Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas. I love this period between Crimbo and NY too, always feels like a very relaxed, reflective time

ToEllewithIt · 26/12/2019 13:23

Looked around a local shop selling various pieces in Donegal tweed. These wide legged Culottes reminded me of all of you. I tried on a fun oversized sleeveless coat. It’s not for me, but the fabric was lovely.

I also liked this textured scarf which definitely overlaps with the advent calendar.

Burnt orange Oscar de La Renta is apropos of nothing, but I loved the image and it reminded of the advent calendar.

In sales purchases I took a notion to call my local fancy department store and ask about a Celine skirt I’d been eyeing up and it’s 65% off so I bought that. It’s black wool midi with a box pleat. Forgive me Phoebe for I have sinned and worshipped at the altar of Hedi. I think online retailers reduce earlier, but bricks and mortar stores seem to cut deeper. Presumably they are under more space pressure.

Elle, you heathen, let this be a warning of what becomes of those that overuse the word "wonderful", all of a sudden Hedi Slimane becomes "wonderful" 🧐Wink

I'm ignoring the onine sales as we're hopping on a plane tomorrow and won't be back until the second week of January (won't have much internet access). Did receive attached 3.1 Phillip Lim top in silk before Christmas through Vinted, and I finally get to boast about the amazing price I got it for despite not having access to the magical charity shops you all seem to have. €6 including shipping Shock I'm still amazed at the price, colour looks better with my skin tone than the seller's, also a more flattering fit on me except that it's very long, forgot there was a period of time where tops went well past bums but it works well tucked in and I can always contemplate shortening them, they're going along on holiday so I'll figure it out there.

I like the scarf too, Elle, pic 1 from the previous set definitely looks like something from Bani's imagination that never materialises when she's looking for it, pic 2 looks like something Red would wear and the coat is something I could see quirky digging out from the back of her closet or a random charity shop find. I'd be all over that coat had it been in a plain fabric. Oscar looks good too, I'm quite feeling what I'm dubbing a spice palette, ochres, dusty oranges, etc.

Lovely coat Bani's SIL. I love the Donald Duck tradition in Sweden. Vaguely related, I made some cardamom buns today (new recipe from Fabrique via The New York Times) best ones outside of Sweden made by a non Swede I've had so far Halo and the kitchen smells amazing.

Hello again, Methen. I always feel a bit at a loss this time of year, I've been housebound long enough so feel the need to go out and do stuff but everyone else seems to have the same idea and there's not a quiet space anywhere.

€6 including postage? That is a brilliant find! I am off to search vinted now.
Yes that pic 2 from Elle is absolutely my cuppa tea 🍵 ( let’s make it matcha )
That is a great green coat from SIL too.

Redandblue11 · 26/12/2019 20:48

This time of the year is a bit mixed for me too. I am not one for missing ‘home’ normally with the exception of this time, specially as is so different here, you think that after 16 years I would be used ...

Redandblue11 · 26/12/2019 21:00

On the spirit of photo sharing here is me the other day wearing another couple of preloved items , cashemere sweater and “tweedy” skirt , the light is not great but the mix of colours is quite punchy, one of them like the sweater also with a bit of metallic mix.

Just had to share this article and can't believe I missed the opportunity to incorporate 'codpiece envy' into the advent calendar.

www.theguardian.com/fashion/2019/dec/27/codpiece-envy-fashion-reinvents-16th-century-accessory

Please inform me of any sightings as I'm pretty sure in my live and let live country this trend is not going to be eagerly jumped on.
