It’s those qualities that bolster its appeal now as it facilitates easy dressing, deviating from traditional black softens the contrast with colour and is surprisingly versatile to incorporate in several colour palettes. It’s a no brainer, leather is here to stay, and so long as you treat it right and butter it up now and then that lustre will remain the envy of your wardrobe.

(Arguably some of the images used may have been 'vegan' leather, it can imitate a good bit of lustre on film but never really in RL)

I think I have trouser envy, Day 20 pics 3 and 5, possibly the same pair and Day 21, pic 4? those caramel leather trousers. Such gorgeous ideas, bo, thank you.

I think I stopped watching MCP when MRJr left. I used to like seeing the techniques that professionals were supposed to learn.

BloomedAgain · 21/12/2019 19:35

I still haven't worn my leather jogging pants. I must remedy that mow O have enough slouchy tops to make them work.
I won an M&S voucher in a charity raffle which needed to be used and rather than just going for the beauty dept I picked up some pretty good everyday schlepping about stuff. A pair of black Freya trousers which come up nice and slouchy on me, i was between two sizes so got the larger size. I also went through the men's dept and found a nice quality white supima modal blend t-shirt which drapes well and is very soft (both itemswerr bought with comfort in mind as I'm all about softness atm).

Sorry I turned off autocorrect due to writing some non-English emails.

Gosh Bo! I have also developed a crush on Sarah Linh Tran now.
How does she do it?
Oh and leather!! been wanting a leather skirt / culottes type for ages but that is well beyond my budget so keep looking at second hand stuff, I know one day it will materialise for me.

Seriously Bo you have a cunning eye. Thank you for sharing those fab photos accompanied with brilliant words.

Floisme · 22/12/2019 11:13

Can I join the Sarah Linh Tran fan club please? I hadn't even heard of her and now I want to be her.

The leather is a push for me as I'm still fond of the old school variety that you had to break in. It was hard work and it demanded a commitment from you and patience, but then it got better with every passing year. But one of my 2020 style resolutions is to get out of my comfort zone more often so I'll take a closer look.

Life in Full Colour

If we’re making more deliberate choices, then let’s deliberately choose colours. Move over neutrals (we still love ya) and make room for more colour, please. And none of that wishy-washy colour blocking either, just pure unadulterated where are my sunglasses saturated displays of colour.

Colour doesn’t have to mean bright either. We seem to be put off by it so much, we’ve almost forgotten about the diversity colour can bring. It’s not all hard and in your face, there’s room for a soft contrast too that doesn’t equate to pastel frumprery.

Let’s not fall into the stereotypical trap of red, cobalt, magenta and occasionally a touch of yellow either. Purples are heavily underrated (unless you’re royalty) and we’re talking purple purple here. Not that weird Pantone millennial colour of the year that was the most unflattering shade of lilac. No, rich warm and underrated purple deserves a little comeback in favour of the classic brights.

And finally, an ode to greens, because I know the demographics of this thread. We’re all just a bunch of dudes here with an obsession for green coats. And wide-legged green trouser envy. And who can blame us, it’s green after all. Yes, to more green, purple and colour in whatever form. If the sun isn’t shining it’s up to us to impart a little joy with the help of colour.

Lovely colours! I'm a great fan of purple, which looks great with lots of colours. As for green, I'm currently wearing a dark green polo neck jumper.

BloomedAgain · 22/12/2019 17:25

My footwear often lets me down when I wear head to toe colour. I think I need to decide on a colour and get some bright footwear.

Redandblue11 · 22/12/2019 18:50

Can I just say how much I love all these. The 6th picture is so clever use of colour.
And yes those purples and green 😍
Today I am wearing a bright silk yellow oversized shirt, coincidentally.

botemp · 22/12/2019 19:03

Nothing coincidental about your yellow silk shirt Red or quirky's green jumper it's all down to my clairvocency Halo

Yes, footwear is always a stumbling block in my mind too (also coats and accessories), lots of colour is definitely the opposite of a capsule wardrobe. I do find sort of tan/cognac surprisingly versatile.

Great colour Red!
Looking in my wardrobe I could probably do head yo toe cognac/camel tones which is saying something as a year ago my watdrobe was only grey, black and navy

Floisme · 23/12/2019 08:50

I really must do something about wearing more colour. Spring and summer are fine - I'm another one who likes greens and berry shades - but for the last couple of years I've been slipping back into grey come winter.

ToEllewithIt · 23/12/2019 12:41

I love this advent calendar. Those leathers are so fantastic. Is vegan leather just was we would have called pleather?

The ochre colour palletes are so rich too.

Finally got packed for going to MIL for Christmas. The house is still all over the place. I feel slightly overwhelmed when I think of everything to be done.

Sartorial Millefeuille

Equally important as colour, but often relegated in favour of it, is texture. Colour is very good at impact and silhouette but it can often lose sight of depth and dimension. Of course, layering is nothing new but the evolution of tonal looks can only really happen through texture, be that in the garment material, or created through physical layering.

This has been Haider Ackermann’s niche for quite some time and rarely is it imitated well by other designers. One doesn’t need to step in those footsteps, however, to find a new approach to it.

I will never apologise for a bit of HA love on the annual AC

Rather than layering being the process of the end-user, there’s a move of deconstructing an reconstructing in layers that adds a dimension to tonal looks that wasn’t previously there. The men are in on, somewhat ahead of the curve, again.

As forward as it feels there’s also something old fashioned about it. Something that menswear never really abandoned, coordinating pieces that through their design language express a relation to one another.

Each layer brings a flavour to these sartorial millefeuilles that doesn’t only tell a story of colour but evokes the long-forgotten idea of ‘dressing’ which is tied to something detached of the individual in favour of an embodied one. And in the age of navel-gazing, that is rather radical.

I completely love this too Grin. I love the Haider Ackermann textures and shapes. I feel that autumn and winter really lend themselves to texture, generally. Probably, because you can borrow menswear ideas like tweed quite easily, which adds to the old fashioned element.
