Why can't I wear a pleated skirt?

Just that really. I love the current trend of wearing a pleated midi skirt with trainers. Why do I end up looking like a pot bellied frumpy mess? I have tried three different skirts and each one had looked horrendous. Anyone have any links to flattering pleated skirts or should I give up?

@ChandlerBongsNeighbour Love how you style yours

I think for these skirts to work you can't have any fat around the waist and it needs to be really defined too. Didn't even try.

I can’t wear pleated midi skirts either, I’m 5ft 4, short body, slim hips, I look horrendous. Pleats seem to come out horizontally from the waistband. Midi is a bad length for me too, makes me look v dumpy.

And size 8/10.

Also wore pleated school skirts. Then I changed school and we didn’t have to wear them and could wear straight ones. Hurrah! It was about the only good thing about changing schools.

I’ve completely given up on the pleated skirt look, look like a whale in a tutu!!
Maybe go for a midi dress with 3/4 leggings and converse for a similar, funky look?

Unless you are model thin, straight up and down or wanting to feature in a porn film in a tiny schoolgirl skirt you are wasting your time.

I worked out that a drop waist works best, smooth top then flare out from there. Try some out and see how you get on.

I look like a sack of potatoes and frumpy in skirts that fall from the waist. I have a short waist and big hips and thighs so they look terrible

Box pleats also look better on me, again not starting at the waist band

You do need to have narrow hips, and I agree that a slightly dropped waist is more flattering. I love them, but not with trainers; boots are better and warmer.

I think I look nice in a pleated midi but maybe I'm just deluding myself!! I'm a size 16 and 5'11" Confused

Another Hattie Jacques here. Im an hourglass and I think the pleated skirt just doesn’t show the definition enough between my waist and my hips. I look really thick waisted Sad
