Long hair, nearly 40, how do you style it?

I put it into a simple plait for night time or when I'm at home, but it seems a little bit childish to go wear out! Normally just tie it back in a doubled over ponytail bit it's too long and heavy and keeps falling out. I know I need to get it cut, but that's not going to happen for another month.

I'm nearly 47, and wear my hair in a chignon (twisted up and over, held in an ibis clip), in a bun (with a doughnut and pins for formal, twisted and held with a telephone wire type band otherwise, or sometimes plaited and twisted). Or I wear it down if I have time to coerce it into behaving

Mine is currently a bit past shoulder length. It's usually down and straightened (sometimes poker straight, sometimes just a straightening brush run over it to smooth it out) but sometimes in a high ponytail.

@evilharpy, I was wondering this the other day actually. Do high ponytails look a bit childish past a certain age? Maybe I should just go for it.

MikeUniformMike · 11/10/2019 12:47

Just go for it. Mine's usually in a french plait.
I'd avoid pigtails or two plaits.

High pony. Or doubled up and over if in a hurry. It looks far better clipped to the side or half pinned back. Just takes more time and effort.

FaFoutis · 11/10/2019 13:16

Twist it, pin it up. Like wedding hair.

Minds at my belly button, either it's Styled, it's curly, and down, or it's twisted up in a bulldog clip into a high bun.

evilharpy · 11/10/2019 13:22

nobigotsallowed Not high like a pineapple on top of my head but high up at the back. I don't think it looks childish. But then again I once posted on here wondering whether heart jewellery (like heart shaped earrings etc) was childish and got a telling off for it so what do I know? Grin

FaFoutis · 11/10/2019 13:24

I would say that heart shaped anything is childish, but I have a nose ring so what do I know?

Elllllle · 11/10/2019 13:32

Like a pineapple!!! Amazing Grin I dont mean high pony like a pineapple either, I meant styles more like these

Loosely casual gathered and twisted at the base of the neck. Straight down when immaculately clean. Plain low ponytail - I find tying it lower towards the base of the neck looks a bit more grownup.
I have a collection of grips and gizmos to do various styles but I find they don’t hold throughout the day and my hair comes undone as everything slips away after a few hours.

Incidentally, now that we have to start wearing coats, does anyone get that annoying strand at the back that seems to move or twist with the coat and doesn’t look smooth like the rest of your hair? Very annoying. Other than tying hair up, I can’t find a solution. I think it’s because my hair is dyed as I don’t remember this problem from before colouring my hair.

Im 41 and my hair is elbow length. For work it needs to be tied back so normally a high pony tail, side plait, 2 french plaits (v occassionally) or a bun. Loose if I'm going out.
