Are my trousers too short? Should I wear socks?!

I wanted nice trousers for work, it's smart casual. I wear brogues to work, brown or black usually. Should I be wearing socks? It's cold so I want to! But I've noticed trousers these days seem short on me? (I'm only 5ft 6) are they supposed to be a little short? The trousers fall to my ankle bone. Shouldn't they be longer? Should I be buying tall length? Or am I seriously out of date here and ankle bone is the normal length?! If so should I be wearing trainer socks, even in winter?! Or are black socks ok? I hope someone can make sense of this for me!!

I feel sorry for children in trousers that are too short.

But apparently it is a thing now.

Ankle length trousers / jeans are in just now - or 7/8 length as it’s sometimes called. As is having bare ankles all year round. I personally can’t cope with cold ankles so unless it’s peak summer I do wear socks. I chose bright colour or patterned socks with jeans or just plain black when it’s smart trousers. I’m not exactly super fashionable though.

It is a thing to flash a bit of ankle, either bare or with a nice sock.
Tbh if you haven't noticed this (it's been a thing for a few years) I wouldn't worry and just wear what suits you - you might have to hunt around for longer length trousers though, or go into the less fashion influenced shops.

Ankle boots with them in winter,

thedevilinablackdress · 07/10/2019 19:43

Yes, ankle bearing trousers are in.
In colder weather I wear them with socks, usually ones that contrast.

jenthelibrarian · 07/10/2019 19:51

Oh, how I loathe ankle swingers, as we used to call too-short trousers.
I also think three-quarter sleeves are hideous, too.

I'm a bit tall though, so the general effect is less chic and more 'shrunk in the wash' on me.

Ohyesiam · 07/10/2019 20:24

Ankles have been very in of recent years. My ankles are my best bit so I’m cool with that. But I don’t get them out when it’s cold.

DontFundHate · 07/10/2019 20:47

Oh dear! I've had my DSs in quick succession over the last 5 years and so I think that's why I've missed this.. not that im super fashionable anyway! I also work in quite an old fashioned place so no one bares their ankles...

What would you wear with these? www.next.co.uk/style/st489019#819579 these are the trousers I ordered, I love the material and colour and fit except they feel a little short! I'd wear brouges but with black socks? No socks? Or just get some longer trousers?!

Wear them! Go with contrasting socks or stripes, or argyle socks. Will look good with your brogues.

Stravapalava · 07/10/2019 22:15

Or, shock horror... whispers... pop socks !! I still rock a pop sock occasionally as I can't stand having cold ankles but love the bare ankle look.

thedevilinablackdress · 08/10/2019 06:48

Yep, contrasting socks. Could be e.g. mustard, burgundy, teal, grey stripes, something to go with whatever top you're wearing maybe.

DontFundHate · 09/10/2019 06:57

Thank you all for your advice. You're all much more fashionable than me! I've returned the trousers, I'm just not brave enough!

Oh go on OP. It's a cool look.
Love @24Ninkaninus suggestion. Rock it 😀

I looked round at work yesterday and 80% of women had their ankles on display.

They looked either frumpy, squat or absolutely beautiful. Knowing damn well which category I would fall into, plus a pathological fear or cold ankles and a ‘jack ups!’ Hangover from my teenage years and I’m just not prepared to play along!

Monty27 · 09/10/2019 07:14

It is a look that needs to be just right I guess. I love it 😊
