Can anyone help me find a ring?

I need to choose my engagement ring, went out to try a few on & have an idea of what I'd like but can't find it...

Platinum preferably
Trilogy diamond
Flush setting I think it's called, where the diamonds are completely encased in the band.
Budget is up to £800ish

I tried one on which I loved (will try to attach a picture) but it was way over budget as the diamonds went all the way round.

Or can anyone recommend somewhere online I could get one made? Is it even feasible with my budget?

Can anyone help me find a ring?

I feel like it's a bit steep for that size of diamonds.

I've seen similar in windows of wee independents up here. They're more likely to haggle in person mind you.

Any chance you're visiting scotland OP- all the good buys seem to be up here!

TwattingDog · 03/10/2019 18:47

Yes, go look in independent places, even pawn shops. I think it's a lot of money for not a lot of ring.

Have you thought about other metals?

Look at men's styles too - this is a popular design for rings aimed at grooms.

Some alternatives?

Lots of different things to look at OP

Elieza · 03/10/2019 19:14

My ring is palladium. It was cheaper than platinum when we got it but I was back looking at rings again last year and apparently the price has jumped and they’re dearer than platinum now? Who knows.

Tbh nowadays I’d prob just buy one of the diamonique platinum plated rings on qvc and go on holiday with the extra money we’d saved!

GreyHare · 03/10/2019 19:50

Try searching Swiss set as well, but be warned, I had a Swiss set wedding band it was gold rather than platinum but I had lost two diamonds out of it within 2 years so changed it to plain band as I couldn't afford to keep replacing them.

Sparklypurpleunicornsaremyfav · 04/10/2019 08:00

You won't get platinum for £800. You can wear palladium and platinum together but palladium is slightly darker and greyer. It's not as hard wearing as platinum, it's just as soft as gold but won't change colour like white gold but when scratched can be put a buffer. Sounds like a rub over setting your after, but with a trilogy again you maybe looking over the £800 mark in palladium.

Aderyn19 · 04/10/2019 10:02

I would avoid white gold as it usually needs replating regularly (there are different mixes of white gold which affect how yellow they go over time, but when you buy them they are all rhodium plated so are shiny).
With that style of ring, I would probably not bother with a wedding ring and just wear the one. If you did that, you could probably buy the one you want with stones all the way around, since you will be saving money on a wedding ring.

BubblesBuddy · 04/10/2019 10:51

I don’t see a lot of these rings as engagement rings. They are wedding bands with diamonds. Far more fun to get a proper engagement ring and a plain wedding band.

Antique rings are so much better value and you can get lovely ones for less than £800. Antique emporiums often have different jewellery sellers under one roof.

You also need to read up about diamonds before you buy. 0.06 carats is tiny tiny tiny. You need 1/4 of a carat (0.25) at least to be able to see it! I would also look on line at antique jewellery sites. Carol Franks, DelAnn Jewels, A C Silver and others. At least educate yourself before you buy.

Platinum is always expensive but lasts. Diamond eternity rings have small diamonds all the way round. You could look at them but they cannot bad sized. Half hoop has half the way round set with diamonds.

CrabbitArse · 04/10/2019 14:24

Unfortunately I just don't like traditional engagement rings. I'm not a jewellery wearer hence me looking for something pretty low key. I'll have a look at all these suggestions & continue down my Etsy worm-hole Grin

@BubblesBuddy it doesn’t really matter what you see as an engagement ring, the OP is wearing it and that’s what she has chosen. It’s nice to see something different.

@CrabbitArse, I second the idea of checking out a few pawnbrokers shops. If you phone round and tell them what you are looking for, they might have something perfect in stock.

BubblesBuddy · 04/10/2019 16:28

The pictures ring was a wedding band. That’s ok if you are just buying one ring. However when describing rings the vast majority of shops and sellers will differentiate between wedding bands, eternity rings and engagement rings.

When a poster asks if something is good value but doesn’t understand carats or anything about jewellery, I was trying to be helpful and steer the OP towards quality and value.

However I can see it’s not wanted so I’ll disappear and gaze at my 6 carat emerald cut diamond Rock! At least I can appreciate it! A wedding band isn’t a different engagement ring, it’s a wedding band.

Yeah, that kind of twattery definitely isn't wanted. Wink
(Joke or not!)

I have a similar wedding band to the type of ring you are looking at as an engagement ring. I don't really like wearing much jewellery and never wear my engagement ring.

I'm just wondering what style wedding band you will go for as with you wanting a wedding band style engagement ring they could look the same?

Would you consider not bothering with an engagement ring and then you could perhaps increase the budget for your wedding band?

Sparklypurpleunicornsaremyfav · 05/10/2019 09:43

You could look at the emmy London range, she designs exclusively for h samuel. She does loads of traditional engagement style rings but she also does a lot of band styles, her designs are very art deco/1920's vintage. They are certified diamonds and beautiful

ClumsyCow · 05/10/2019 10:08

yeas palladium has shot up in price and is now more expensive than platinum

CrabbitArse · 05/10/2019 12:39

Wedding band will be completely plain so not particularly expensive. In all honesty I'd go without the engagement ring too but DP wants me to have one. I wear no jewellery, not even a watch so a band style engagement ring will suit me much better than a "rock"

NatashaAlianovaRomanova · 05/10/2019 13:09

OP I was about to suggest skipping the engagement ring & putting the budget towards getting a really nice wedding ring - is there no way you can talk fiancé round?

Ninkaninus · 05/10/2019 13:15

If you look at vintage rings I’m sure you will be able to find a lovely ring in platinum for your budget. Or Etsy is a good option too.

You can either go in person to jewellers or look online. I like a few on this site:

www.gatsbyjewellery.co.uk/

I’m going to get my one year anniversary ring this way (we’ve been together for years and years but only getting married this year so I figure I’m due another ring fairly quickly Grin ).

CharitySchmarity · 05/10/2019 16:59

A wedding band isn’t a different engagement ring, it’s a wedding band.

An engagement ring is a ring given on the occasion of an engagement. It doesn't really matter what style it is. You could have a traditional wedding-style ring as an engagement ring and an engagement-style ring as a wedding ring if you wanted, it's why you're wearing them that counts.

Astillbe · 05/10/2019 18:25

What about something like this in the pic? You could also use it as your wedding ring when you do get married or If you do want a different wedding ring I think a very simple band would look ok with it.

My wedding ring is similar to this but in rose gold and I sometimes wear a ring like the 2nd pic with it.
