I'd be rubbish at this myself, but can highly recommend going to somewhere to get a make over. My MIL got me some Body Shop vouchers and a makeover for a birthday present and 6 months later I finally found time (and the courage!) to go in. It was fab - the makeover lady spent loads of time with me, did different kinds of things - including evening make up - and then left me to browse. Hey presto I'm now wearing different eye shadows and even have brushes!

So book somewhere in a shop you're comfortable with and usually buy make up from and have a lovely time!
