Shift dress and polo/turtle neck - yes or no?

I have got a nice smart shift dress that I never wear, it's quite heavy textured black/grey fabric so too warm for summer with bare arms, and not really warm enough for winter with a cardi over (my office is freezing in winter). I have thought about wearing it with a black polo neck jumper underneath, thick tights and ankle boots.

I think it looks OK, and I think the dress works with a polo neck, but not sure about the overall look. Whats the general opinion on this?

I wear dresses like that with a scoop neck long sleeved top under as I can't stand clothing on my neck, otherwise I would wear with a polo

Yes.

I'd boil in it at work, but would definitely wear if my workplace was cold.

Why not? It sounds right.

If it suits your build/frame then I don't see why it wouldn't work as a style.

It would look horrendous on me, but then I dislike anything above my collarbone .

Thanks, don't know, just wondered if the polo neck made it look a bit frumpy/old fashioned but I am possibly over thinking it. You know when you just want someone else's opinion? I only have a husband and 18 yo son in the house so they are no help. I do like the dress and need to wear it or it has to go to the charity shop.

Yes. I quite often do this with dresses. I have some lovely fine-knit polo necks from pure for the purpose.
Might it also work with a white shirt underneath? I sometimes do that too.

I do it. I have thermal Heattech polo necks from uniqlo which are lovely and soft.

I was online clothes shopping yesterday and a model had this sort of outfit on and I thought it looked really smart.

I think it looks really good! I can't wear it because I can't cope with anything on my neck and I think it makes my pointy jaw look weird, but it's great on other people

Thanks all, pleased with the answers, the dress is saved from the charity shop. Might try a shirt underneath too, didn't think about that.
