How many shades do you use out of an eyeshadow palette?

Single shadows seems to have almost disappeared from most cosmetic ranges these days, you have to buy a palette of at least four colours. Usually I use one a lot, one a bit, and the rest - however many that is - once or not at all.
Is it all a con to get us to spend more money, or do people really use all the shades?

I have dark blue eyes so tend to go for golds/browns/taupes more than any other colour so I always try and buy palettes that has these colours in various shades. That way I know I’ll use most of them. I steer clear of anything with shades that are bright and bold as I know I won’t use them. So for me a palette is a good investment but I choose wisely. I also spend as much as I can afford for good quality (Anastasia Beverly Hills palettes are pricey but the best I’ve ever used for eye shadow, very pigmented and only a tiny bit needed for great coverage and colour)

Mac do individual shadows and also refill palettes where you buy whatever colours you want.

I use 4 shades.
I use the lightest all over my lid and to my brow (very lightly). The next covers my lid and I blend. The next covers the outer half of my lid. The last one just in the very outer corner and perhaps as like an eyeliner. All thoroughly blended. If I am short on time I just use two.

I love makeup and I love colour. I use build colours regularly so can make good use of a palette, though there is always a couple I won't use.

NYX are good for singles, either just the pan or in an individual compact.

Urban decay also have smaller palettes with more neutral and then a pop of colour.

I won't buy a palette unless I know I will use at least half of them

As a new year's resolution I challenged myself to wear every eyeshadow I own at least once as I would only use one or maybe two colours from a pallet.

It worked really well and threw up some new favourites for me that I never would have considered otherwise. It also got me out of a bit of a rut of eye "looks" Smile

Christ, bloody autocorrect. Palette not pallet. I don't apply it that heavily! Grin

I love my two Urban Decay palettes - Naked 3 and Naked Smoky - love them because I can use all of the shades. I think this is because they’re all from a similar or complementary colour range. In 40 some years of using make up they are the only palettes I could say that about. I wonder how much money I’ve wasted throwing out palettes where I’ve only used half or a third of the shades.

am so fed up and bored stupid by the 'naked' beige/brown/copper look. I cannot wear those coppery shades as they emphasise the redness in my skin. I find the brown all very samey. Although I have warmish ivory colour skin I now go for pinks, greens soMe blues and mauves, greys too.

Every time I fancy a palette - the same brown tones look back at me. Boring!

At the moment I am using the Boots no7 trios - pink blossom, rose gold and a greeny blue one. Forget the name. I normally use two out of the three. Would probably use all three is going out anywhere.

I had a lovely Dior one that was all mauves -ages ago. I used them all.

I use most, but I love experimenting with colour. Lately I’ve not been wearing any and just rocking my lash extensions (which can be frustrating when you’re wearing eyeshadow) but I’ve not long bought a Huda palette so I’d better get experimenting.

So far, my faves are Kat Von D.
