If I brighten it up with colourful shoes, nails and accessories?

I have gold, red or turquoise shoes and bags that are quite glam and would look nice. Just a bit unsure about the black dress.

What sort of wedding, when, and can you show us the dress?

Baguetteaboutit · 29/08/2019 15:19

It depends, are you his mother or his ex?

I wore a knee length plain black body con dress with light grey heels and a light pink blazer type jacket to a wedding.. no-one batted an eyelid that I was in a black dress

I’ll take a photo when I get home! The wedding is on Saturday 7th September. A relative but not a close one, so I won’t be a member of the main party.

It’s actually more of a charcoal grey. Quite plain, almost linen material, just below the knee. Short sleeves and a round neckline.

A friend of mine wore black to my wedding, but she did ask me if it would be OK first.

Several guests wore black dresses to me (summer) wedding - I think it's widely accepted now.

Mackerz · 29/08/2019 15:27

Thanks everyone. Means I don’t have to go shopping this weekend!

I have. I don't think it's a big deal nowadays.
Still wouldn't wear white tho...

Thiswayorthatway · 29/08/2019 15:35

Of course black is fine.

ExpletiveDelighted · 29/08/2019 15:38

Traditionally its a no because black is for funerals but I don't think its really a problem nowadays.

It depends a bit. Glam evening wedding it's more acceptable than daytime summer do and coloured jacket/shoes etc help.

Generally black is going to fit in more at smart/evening/urban type does, IMO. And it's obvs more of a risk if you could be seen in some way to be not supporting the wedding (significant relationship with B or G, don't support the wedding for some reason).

Increasingly though, nobody really cares as long as you don't actively look like you're going to a funeral or a law firm interview.
