...to wear on a special night out coming up with a group including lots of younger friends of friends. Will involve clubbing etc.

I am 39 and size 12-14 (essentially I am size 13!). I am tall and I have hips, tummy, boobs etc. I am not body confident at the moment and would really appreciate any thoughts. I feel slightly too chubby and untoned all over really, including arms and legs and my waist is becoming a bit barrel like.

I really want to find an outfit I actually feel attractive in and is somewhat cool - I am normally fairly fashionable but never wear 'going out' clothes.

I feel like dresses don't suit me at all but perhaps I can't find the right one..

Things I like on me are bardot necklines, structured things, eg. tailored shorts or trousers.
Things that don't seem to work on me at all are 50's style waist lines (very ageing on me) empire lines, pleated skirts (look like my mum), and because I'm tall a lot of over the knee skirts turn out too short.

I have been searching but I am incredibly stuck and actually starting to feel depressed about it. But I want to feel excited and nice about what I'm wearing. Please please help me fashionable stylish ladies!

Thanks very much for the suggestion @HyggeHeart it sounds like a good idea, but looking at the picture I know I wouldn't feel comfortable and that the waist bit and the gathering round the waist / hips would make me look / feel larger...

What would you normally like to wear on a night out?

INeedAStylist · 27/08/2019 20:59

@sleepwhendie I would normally resort to skinny jeans a cami and blazer with heels... However this is a smart club with no jeans policy and I will be too hot for a blazer. Tight strappy mini dresses seem to be the usual attire there...

Sorry that was meant to be @sleepwhenidie

Can you do skinny trousers instead?

sleepwhenidie · 27/08/2019 21:06

Killer outfits tend to be the ones you feel fabulous in - wiggling into a dress you don’t find comfortable won’t achieve that Smile. I’d try looking for a kind of upgraded version of what you normally wear?

MmeBufo · 27/08/2019 21:08

So. It sounds like you really need a 'posher' version of what you'd normally feel comfortable in. Maybe slim, tailored trousers with a wee bit of stretch. Do you do sleeveless tops? If not maybe a loosing transparent top/shirt with cammi under would work. Anything tight/fitted in the armpits will be vv hot, so avoid that. Keep the killer heels, obviously.

Semi-random black top, as an example m.zara.com/uk/en/semi-sheer-embroidered-blouse-p07200222.html?v1=17283273&v2=1281574

yomommasmomma · 27/08/2019 21:16

I would go for something like this, it's fab, perfect for the club but also cool.

sleepwhenidie · 27/08/2019 21:21

Not what I was suggesting but this dress is great m.zara.com/de/en/limited-edition-sequinned-dress-p02488107.html?v1=13905921&v2=1281703

Or maybe this with skinny trousers? m.zara.com/de/en/limited-edition-sequinned-dress-p02488107.html?v1=13905921&v2=1281703

ThirdAidKit · 27/08/2019 21:26

YES TO ALL THOSE SEQUINNED THINGS.

That ASOS jumpsuit... LOVE.

mnahmnah · 27/08/2019 21:34

I am your age and have the exact same figure and height as you and also had a big night out recently with younger people. Nothing to wear. Felt old and fat. I got this and felt brilliant. Never tried a jumpsuit before so I was pleasantly surprised. Dressed it up with heels and jewellery. From warehouse.

Something like this?

I love the whole outfit www.johnlewis.com/reiss-blythe-belted-straight-leg-trousers/p4297226

JMAngel1 · 27/08/2019 21:43

How about skinny pleather leggings with a long line cami top in a sequin or satin that skims over everything and ends just below your hips? Sleeveless if you can so you stay cool.

Something like this? With skinny trousers and killer heels?

Go for your normal style with a little bit of ooompf.

DISCLAIMER: I'm fat,not fashionable,not cool.

JMAngel1 · 27/08/2019 21:46

@yomommasmomma wow, can I come clubbing with you? Fierce!

INeedAStylist · 27/08/2019 21:48

Thanks for all the different ideas!

I really like the trousers you posted @Sexnotgender and indeed that whole outfit. I feel like the structured adjective would help me feel sucked in... just need to find a pair that are a bit cheaper now.

The Angel wing jumpsuit is extraordinary. I would not wear it in a million years but it would look great on someone! Grin
