If you're an Apple what style dresses suit you?

Since turning 40 my shape has changed. I'm basically morphing into my Mum. So, I have narrow shoulders, large boobs, zero waist anymore and instead have a barrell shaped midrift. Flat bum and hips but at least my legs are still good.

Anything with a fitted waist looks laughable , and midi dresses just make me look frumpy. Help?

Ho OP, you sound like you're a similar body shape to me. I like cocoon dresses (I've got the Hush Ivy dress in 4 colours), I wear them in the winter with opaque tights and ankle boots and in the summer bare legs and flat sandals or trainers. I've just bought a couple of knee-length shirt dresses too (from ASOS) which I wear with a wide fabric tie-belt to try and give the illusion of having a waist!

Lucked · 23/08/2019 21:00

Yeah cocoon or sack shaped at my most appley. Trousers and a top are the better option.

Are you overweight? I have successfully lost weight (mid 40s) and although I still have a thickset middle I have many more options on what to wear.

BitOfFun · 23/08/2019 21:02

"Midrift"- an excellent typo Smile. Mine's drifted too; I shall watch with interest!

I may need to have my breast(s) removed soon, and I'm depressed to think I'll end up looking like a boiled egg. Gawd knows what I'll wear then.

Saint Tropez have some lovely loose shift type dresses in nice fabrics. I have a similar shape and find empire line maxi dresses make me look pregnant and mainly stick to skinny trousers and long tops unless I need to dress up. I have a gorgeous multilayered frock which works really well but I can’t remember where I bought it.

Well I have one boob and a big Buddha belly. Hate looking at myself side on. Pinafore or dungaree dresses are good in the winter but I struggle in the summer. Confused

yellowsun · 24/08/2019 08:26

Shift dresses or ones that go straight down work best for me as an apple. I can’t wear anything that is fitted at the waist!

Gillybobs · 24/08/2019 09:08

Straight shapes with fabric belts that I tie loosely, gives the illusion of a waist. Cocoon dresses too.

sonjadog · 24/08/2019 09:27

Cocoon dresses make me look even rounder. Pinafores work well for me, also dress with loose tie waists in the same colour.

PickingUpLicks · 24/08/2019 10:29

Phase Eight do a knitted dress called Becca which is loose at the top and then goes into a slim skirt. You can hitch the skirt shorter and make the top bit looser as required. No good at all for summer but nice in winter with opaques and ankle boots. They're frequently on offer, I wouldn't ever pay full price for P8.
I can't wear anything at all that has a defined waist band, belted or tie waist as I just look like a sack of spuds.

I suppose the dreaded tunic tops exist for a reason...

SarahBeeney · 24/08/2019 18:21

Tunic dresses

grownup2 · 24/08/2019 18:51

Thanks for tip on the Becca dress. Phase8 have it in several sizes incl my 16 in dark purply nightshade colour in the sale for £35 - so I'm giving it a try. Other colours not reduced as much.

northernlites · 24/08/2019 18:57

I'm the same 🍏
I really like the hush ivy
It looks like it would suit

Jaffacakebeast · 24/08/2019 19:20

A line or skater type

AnnabellaFagina · 24/08/2019 21:19

I can’t wear tunic or empire line because I look about 5 months pregnant. A line work for me, especially those linen lagenlook dresses- which are really empowering because no one can see what your figure is like and so comfortable.

Works well and gives illusion of waist.

Adollop · 25/08/2019 00:46

Following with interest. I'm size 16, started my own thread on here. I've now decided to try and lose some weight, but know that I'll still have no waist.

Can someone link to pinafore dresses that'll suit sizes 14 and 16, as mentioned above. Also A line dresses.

I tried on a shirt dress, but felt it just accentuated my lack of waist - I looked like my mum!

Adollop · 25/08/2019 00:47

And what do you wear under the pinafore dresses?

WowserBowser · 25/08/2019 10:51

What kind of thing do you normally wear? @FaerieKiss
