So, you've come back from holiday and unpacked . What did you take that you really didn't need and won't take next year?

I'm going away in October so I'm not packing (yet) but I have a liited time to buy things I need .

In years gone by the things I didn't use :
Make -Up . I don't wear it at home . I didn't wear it on holiday . I'll take a tinted lip balm.

Sandles/flip flops that I cannot keep on my feet , usually those jewelled ones .

Bikinis that are non supporting (I really need unholstery not bunting)

Heavy denim shorts or skirt (except what I travel in)

Hair dryer

I will make sure I take enough suncare , knickers , and crucially make sure that everything can be worn with at least 2 other things unless its a dress.

Nothing that I wouldn’t have brought BUT I didn’t bring enough sun dresses. I discarded two while packing and am now 😑 because I had room for them. If anything have bought too many shorts, I’m in bikinis and sun dresses every day as it’s a proper beach holiday. Agree on the decent structured bikini - I am pleased with my new figleaves ones and glad that I finally left my pre kids string bikini at home this time (still secretly love it though and will keep it for the garden!)

MarshaBradyo · 18/08/2019 21:53

High espadrilles I just wore flat shoes

jenthelibrarian · 18/08/2019 21:55

I've taken to keep a note in my diary of what I actually wore each day of any trip or holiday, home or away.
Did I bother to change to go out every evening?
Could I be arsed to wear 'smart' shoes to go out after a day on my feet sightseeing?

birdsdestiny · 18/08/2019 21:55

Hairdryer. Everywhere has a hairdryer.
I will take more socks and pants for everyone next year, we got caught in the power outage on the way home and had to have an extra night in London. There was a lot of recycling pants and socks Envy

Nextphonewontbesamsung · 18/08/2019 21:56

Socks. We had 14 days of 32-37 degree heat.

Pascha · 18/08/2019 21:58

I wish I'd taken an extra raincoat and my waterproof trousers. I packed two dresses and a skirt and wore none of them.

chesterfuckingdraws · 18/08/2019 22:05

Shoes! I always take far too many pairs and end up living in the same 2 pairs that are comfy
This year I finally left all the high shoes behind I'll live in flip flops/flats for 2 weeks.

Gym clothes are in the leave it pile! Every year I take them and every year I ignore them. I'm not sure why I think I'll suddenly want to go running or to the gym.

This year I pared back my stuff for during the day and think I've been a bit overzealous. I don't have enough tops to wear with shorts. Thankfully I have washing powder though.

ScrambledSmegs · 18/08/2019 22:11

I've ust got back, and used everything I took. However that's because we always go to the same place and I've learnt from previous years. We also have washing facilities.

One thing I've learnt I don't need is socks. Take sports socks for runs but that's it. Too hot for them.

I forgot my plain beach cover ups this year. Really annoying. Wore shorts (decathlon cheapies) and t-shirts instead. Was ok but dresses so much cooler.

The year that I discovered peshtemel towels and swapped them for our heavy beach towels was the game-changer. They double up as sarongs or as a sort of pashmina if you find a particularly attractive one.

I wish I had taken more dresses but have lost weight and had an excited clear-out. Don't throw out 90% of your wardrobe a week before your holiday Blush. You live and learn.

Oh and I discovered some great tan leather Tevas this year. They aren't quite as rugged as my proper hiking sandals, but they're a lot prettier. They ticked all the boxes. I took some mid-heel espadrilles for evenings out.

Bollocks to hair dryers. Too much weight, don't need them.

Maryann1975 · 18/08/2019 22:11

I always pack far too many clothes whenever we go away. We’ve recently gone on a city break for 2 nights and I said we were packing light, so no one was to pack anymore than one T-shirt for each day and a space pair of pants and socks for each day. No spare shorts. Which would have been fine except I spilt dinner all down my shorts and ended up having to wash then in the sink and dry them under the hand dryer in the hostel.

I’m not going to pack light again!

Troels · 18/08/2019 22:26

I reduced what I take, I now pack about 5/6 sundresses and two pair of shorts and a few tee shirts, knickers bras and two swim suits. Flip flops and a pair of sandals. All does me for about 2 weeks, I wash the sundresses and shake and hang to dry and they are just worn over and over. We don't go out to posh places, but I will put a clean dress on for dinner and a bit of lippy and some eyliner.

JaceLancs · 18/08/2019 22:28

Jumpsuit - far too fiddly for toileting and too hot
Anything denim - too thick for heat
Took too many swimsuits as ended up wearing bikinis

LemonAddict · 18/08/2019 22:39

I got home from holiday and filled the charity shop bag - with all of my years-old denim skirts and shorts and loads of vest tops and holiday T-shirt’s. I much prefer sundresses for daytime these days.

I always take too many shoes, a hairdryer which ends up being useless because of the different voltage, and costume jewellery which never gets worn because I don’t like leaving my real jewellery in the room/safe.

PhantomErik · 18/08/2019 22:40

Wish I'd taken a light dressing gown instead of pjs. I thought they'd be great for lounging in but no I missed my dressing gown. Also slippers! I love my slippers & missed them.

Smart clothes for the kids were a bit of a waste, boys used chino shorts & shirt once & dd only put a dress on once otherwise it was swimwear (take more of that!) & shorts & t-shirts. I didn't take much make up just eyeliner & pink lipbalm which was enough but wish I'd taken good shampoo & conditioner, mine & dd's hair felt wrecked when we got home Sad

chocatoo · 18/08/2019 22:59

I didn’t take enough knickers - had to hand wash. This was because I took a pair for every day plus a few but because it was so hot I showered twice a day and wanted clean knicks after both showers.

matahairyy · 18/08/2019 23:05

High heels. I’ve stippped taking them.

matahairyy · 18/08/2019 23:08

I’m in a the USA in an apartment in a city. Washing machine means I could have brought hand luggage only.

Sgtmajormummy · 18/08/2019 23:32

Too many washed out and unfashionable swimming costumes.

DD only wanted to wear the ones from this year (at 13 she’s entitled to ditch her old shorty style one pieces and go for bikinis) and DH literally wore and rinsed the same costume every time, in spite of having 4!

I also have 3 expensive (armour-plated) costumes that I can’t bring myself to throw away. I just keep wearing my two trusty favourites.

Wish I’d brought goggles as I got a minor eye infection. Sad

wiltingflower · 19/08/2019 01:08

I didn't need as much make up or make up brushes as I thought I would. I probably won't bring eyeliner anymore and will rely on a single eyeshadow pallette plus mascara for my eyes. I brought concealer, foundation and blusher too but didn't use them at all apart from blusher once. And then there were the nail polishes and nail polish remover- didn't need to redo my nail polish at all till I came home.

I went to the Highlands in Scotland and thought I needed insect repellent spray of some description but didn't use it as no midges about.

I brought a hair dryer and hair curler but didn't use either. I would probably bring these again with me though for peace of mind just in case.

Packed the right number of clothes but think thermal underwear might have been a good shout at night.

Walking sandals weren't used but trainers were.

Theseptemberissues · 19/08/2019 07:13

I always take far too much makeup, only ever end up using bb cream, bronzer and mascara at night. Too many day sun dresses/cover ups, always just throw on denim mom shorts and a loose vest top. Determined to pack lighter next time.

StCharlotte · 19/08/2019 08:39

Bikinis that are non supporting (I really need unholstery not bunting) Grin

I got it spot on this year (first time ever!) except I saved my favourite capri trousers for going out on the last night but we ended staying in and I just stayed in the dress I'd worn on the beach that day.

Eustasiavye · 19/08/2019 09:20

I'm pretty good but then I've travelled a lot over the years.
I always check the weather for every day so pack accordingly.
I don't take a hairdryer, towels or shower gel.
The hotel provides these things.
Depends where you are staying.
i don't bring make up other than lipstick.
I have my lashes and nails and pedicure done plus hair cut and coloured and a bikini wax so I'm ready.
I pin my hair up due to the heat so don't need straighteners etc.
i do bring plenty of dresses and day time cover ups.
I haven't brought socks or trainers as don't need them.
The time Before I took more shorts t shirts and trainers/socks because it was a more practical holiday.
Most recent was a beach holiday so no socks or trainers.
Made do with 2 swim costumes.
Always seem to take too much sun cream and aftersun.

Eustasiavye · 19/08/2019 09:24

I also bring extra pairs of knickers and usually always wear them despite spending the day in a swimming costume.

NaomiFromMilkShake · 19/08/2019 09:38

Snorrkelling gear, not used again. [eye roll]

Good camera.

Brought five pairs of flip flops, a pair of plims, and some lace up plims, have lived in one pair of flip flops and both sets of plims.

Just the right amount of bikinis / cossies...

Plain t shirts and denim cut offs all the time.

We have a mad luggage allowance and yet our baggage requirements are shrinking..

NaomiFromMilkShake · 19/08/2019 09:39

Oh and make up WTF

stucknoue · 19/08/2019 09:41

Watching ... I'm packing later today!
