If you are petite do you wear midi dresses & skirts?

I’m 5’3 and love the current midi dresses and skirts that are around especially the flowing ones.
I tried one on but because I’m short it kind of swamped me and just looked huge even though it was my size a 12.

I love the look of these on other people so just wondered of anyone else wears them despite being fairly short and finds they do suit them? Any examples would be great as I was thinking of getting one in the sales.

I'm the same height as you and I like them. I think the trick is to mess about with different lengths until you find the one that works for you. Mid calf doesn't look good on me (unless with knee boots) but I like them a touch longer, ending at the top of my ankle, in fact in a similar spot to my cropped trousers.

Sooverthemill · 18/08/2019 11:25

Yes but always the petite version

TinyMystery · 18/08/2019 11:26

I’m average height, 5’5 so certainly not statuesque, and have recently become a massive fan of midi dresses! I can move in them and don’t have to worry about showing off my pants! Hurrah! I saw wear what you like!

MaryLennoxsScowl · 18/08/2019 11:28

I’m 5’2” and I wear them, but I often have to take up the hems so they aren’t ankle-length on me. I agree with Floisme; you need to find the flattering point for your legs. Mine is about 5 inches above the ankle.

MaryLennoxsScowl · 18/08/2019 11:29

Oh, and wear something fitted on top.

Cyberworrier · 18/08/2019 11:38

I love midi dresses, although I find only ones with empire lines or vaguely 1950s A-line shape suit me, eg bigger skirts and fitted top half’s. I love drapey midi dresses from Cos and Stories but they truly look make me look like a sack of potatoes, possibly because I have curves and am short ( am size 8/10, 5ft 3). My mum is also petite but has a waif ish figure and can wear anything, grr.

helpmum2003 · 18/08/2019 11:51

I'm 5'4'' and have to be careful with length. I find knee length unflattering, it either has to be above knee or mud calf or lower.

helpmum2003 · 18/08/2019 11:53

Should say mid calf or lower!

And agree that totally unfitted doesn't work unless waif like. Also I can't do the shirt dress thing with a belt, not flattering unfortunately.

Poppysball · 18/08/2019 12:51

Ok yes I guess I need to work out the best length. All the ones I’ve tried so far just swamp me and I feel they are not flattering. I love the fitted waist style and the more flared skirt so maybe I just need to keep trying to find the right one.

I definitely do. I like them to hit ankles/mid calf though - I won’t buy anything longer

herbsmokedchicken · 18/08/2019 13:21

I’m 4”11 so I just tend to buy midi length stuff knowing they will be maxi length on me! Sometimes that means the waist isn’t in the right place on a dress tho so it doesn’t always look right, a belt usually sorts it.

Croquembou · 18/08/2019 13:32

Yes! I love midi and maxi length. But I also quite like the swamped look so I suppose that does help. That said, I look complete shit in everything from New Look so there is some trial and error to get the right kind of swamped.

I also don't worry about things 'making me look short' as if being short is some kind of failing, there's nothing I could wear that would make me look tall so what's the point in fretting. (Not that you are, that's just a general observation about people not wearing things because they'll look short...)

Lambzig · 18/08/2019 19:59

I’m 5’ 3” and find I need a bias cut or tiered but fitted at the hips to make it work on me. Anything too full skirted and I look swamped. Longer looks better on me.

MulberryPeony · 18/08/2019 21:32

I wear lots of midi dresses and skirts despite being only 5’1”. Various lengths too so I can’t really say what makes them work for me.

Minta85 · 18/08/2019 22:19

I’m 5”2 and recently bought the Boden Ava midi dress in the sale. It has a fitted top and flared skirt, and might be the kind of thing you’re looking for. It’s nearly a maxi dress on me, which is fine because of the fitted top half.

ErrolTheDragon · 18/08/2019 22:29

I'm 5'1" and like mid-calf skirts and dresses - the sort of cut of that Boden Ava. But always petite fitting so that the proportions are right.
