does it need to be waterproof?
warm enough to last all winter?
I am lazy and go straight from sweatshirt-only (plus cagoule if rainy) to full-on winter coat.

I bought my DD's school coat from Millets. It was one of those 3 in1 coats and has lasted all year. She wore fleece and top coat together in winter( we walk a couple of miles to school and the top layer is waterproof and it was plenty warm enough) and then separate layers throughout the rest of the year. It cost about £35 and I will be getting another for this next year. HTH
