What coat do you wear over midi-length skirts and dresses?

My last few wardrobe culls have got rid of most of my shorter skirts and I really like longer length dresses and skirts now. Fine in summer, but what do you do for a coat in winter? I'm talking proper winter when a denim or leather jacket is just not warm enough. My coats are all knee length and would look very odd over a midi length dress.

What's the solution?

Long cape/coat. My mother drilled it into me that your skirt should never be visible below your coat/cardigan and for some reason I have obeyed her on that but nothing else. So i’m Ok with a waist length jacket as you say - denim / leather biker etc or even a short faux fur job but if I am wearing a midi skirt, always a longer cape or coat (generally full and swingy as that’s my style).

Full length. Skirt shouldn't be seen underneath.

I like a peacoat type coat when it's not cold enough for a proper winter coat but too cold for a leather jacket. Or a long wool coat, worn open.
