A suit.

PurpleDaisies · 05/07/2019 07:48

Mine have always gone smart but not super smart. Suit trousers, shirt but no tie. Misr were the same.

funmummy48 · 05/07/2019 07:52

Something smart and casual. My DH wore some smart trousers & a short sleeved, open necked shirt. It was very hot in the venue and everyone else was similarly dressed.

Apolloanddaphne · 05/07/2019 07:54

DH is wearing a suit. I am wearing this linen dress.

graduation ceremony -what should parents of the graduate wear?
Decormad38 · 05/07/2019 07:58

Anything no one is looking at the parents. Only those we are celebrating.

Doilooklikeatourist · 05/07/2019 07:58

DH wore a suit both times , and DS wore a suit when he came with us to DDs

DS graduation was much more formal than DDs , though both were smart

Doilooklikeatourist · 05/07/2019 08:00

I wore a nice dress [ one summer , and DD graduated in November , pastel blue coat over smart dress )
Added to above comment ^^

Chinos blazer tie that can come off and go in pocket. Proper shoes.

EleanorReally · 05/07/2019 08:20

oh dear, he doesnt have a suit, he does have chinos but i am not sure they fit,

Does he have vaguely smart trousers and a shirt?

Apolloanddaphne · 05/07/2019 08:28

What does he usually wear when he goes out? If his chomped don't fit them maybe it is time for him to get new ones? He could wear a nice open neck shirt rather than a tie if he doesn't normally wear formal clothes.

EleanorReally · 05/07/2019 08:29

he has black jeans and a nice shirt

PurpleDaisies · 05/07/2019 08:31

I wouldn’t worry, if they’re smart jeans that will be fine

EleanorReally · 05/07/2019 08:31

One of the best things about graduation is the eclectic variety of clothing for graduands and family, everything from jeans and a hoodie to traditional African, dress via suits, kilts and saris.

If he doesn't own a suit then a smart shirt and jeans will be fine.

EleanorReally · 05/07/2019 08:34

good to know,
i have the dress, so i am ok Grin

Black jeans and a nice shirt will be perfectly acceptable.

BubblesBuddy · 05/07/2019 09:03

I saw no one in jeans at DD1s ceremony. Mostly suits or smart trousers and shirts. It was hot! At DD2s it was extra hot. A bigger variety of clothes as it was LCF but again jeans not much in evidence. DC deserve a bit of effort from parents. Best dressed was Grayson Perry though who presented the degrees.

littlebillie · 05/07/2019 14:41

Shirt and tie for men better to be over dressed than under

EleanorReally · 06/07/2019 07:41

Grayson Perry's outfit was designed by the students i believe

If you are having a group photo taken avoid clashing too much.

RedSheep73 · 06/07/2019 07:45

Just something not-embarrassing!

CheddarGorgeous · 06/07/2019 07:47

I am a graduation style expert as it is my job to attend graduations!

Jeans may be hot.

Think about what you want to see yourself in in the photographs for posterity!

But really anything clean and smart is fine. There is usually a wide range of outfits so there's very little you could wear that would stand out as massively inappropriate unless you dress for the beach, a nightclub or a building site.
