Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17 Thread 18

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Altruist should be here tomorrow and I'll give it a go on the face over the weekend.

Karcheer, I'm not sure about TTDO, I think someone may have used a balm and it worked but not as well as an oil, but I'm recallijg vaguely. Cattier makes really simple clay masks. you can get a single sachet of the Vichy which is also useful but the Vichy contains some acids as well, not sure if that hinders or helps the technique. Theoretically should be ok I think but potentially irritating.

botemp · 27/10/2019 19:22

Ok, Altruist feedback is not all that positive. It's great for what I bought it for (neck, hands, and any other bare patches of skin) but it's too greasy for the face IME. Also slightly irritating to my eyes. Consistency is very much like a traditional sunscreen, not as gloopy thick but not the cosmetic elegance we're accustomed to on here either. First day was over moisturiser and that was instant grease shine and second day I tried it without moisturiser, less bad but did get quite shiny throughout the day. It just didn't feel like it ever set, didn't wear makeup over it except concealer and blush but I don't think I'd be too happy putting foundation on the top.

Granted, I didn't expect much considering it's so affordable, so it sort of met those expectations but it's really one to buy for economic reasons rather than anything else.

Jedstre, have you tried those new biore ones yet, they're supposed to be like primers. Although iirc ratzilla wasn't all that complimentary about them, will have to look it up again.

mintmagnummm · 27/10/2019 19:45

bo what is the heliocare mineral spf like please?

SallieSallow · 27/10/2019 21:25

That’s a shame Bo but at that price it’s probably worth investing in for areas other than face, I’ll try and remember it for next summer (don’t tend to expose any flesh in winter Grin)

I’m still waiting for the aquamilk spf to arrive from Japan, will review when it turns up.

Hi Mint 👋 hope you’re enjoying married life Smile

Jedstre · 27/10/2019 21:47

No, I didn’t ever try the Biore primers Bo I did look at them before they were available in UK. I’m not sure if you can use enough to be sure to get the full SPF 50. If they go on ‘dry’ I wouldn’t use enough.
I’ll definitely give altruist a miss.

I got a sample of heliocare oil free gel (not mineral mint) tinted version but I ended up a bit shiny as the day went on. I’d like to try the non tinted version though as I liked the texture.

EnidButton · 29/10/2019 14:34

Hi 👋 the thread dropped off my list. Hope everyone is doing ok.

After a few months of good hair and skin it's all gone a bit wrong. Random spots, oily roots and dry patches. Noticed an increase in S&B posts so I'm going to blame the change in temperature, central heating and comfort eating.

I have a lot of white hair at my temples after only 3 weeks which is very annoying. Not that bothered by grey/white hair like some people seem to be but it was expensive to get coloured and usually lasts much much longer. 😟

So I'm going to stock up on some extras like eye gels (temp fix but I like them), face masks (as I ran out) and buy the hair products they used in the salon as I liked them. Also no more sugar for a while. Fingers crossed it does the trick as I'm not feeling very confident in myself atm.

SallieSallow · 29/10/2019 18:28

Hi Enid 👋

I think it’s the time of year for things going wrong, change of temperature outside, heating inside, less daylight and fresh air. My skin is always much better in spring and summer (yet another reason to hate winter Grin

I get white hair at my temples too, I use those root touch up kits. Some of them are powders which work ok for a temp fix but I also use one from nice and easy every few weeks that’s an actual dye but just a small amount that you use only on the whites/greys.

EnidButton · 29/10/2019 19:34

I might try those out thanks Sallie Smile It's just at my temples and it's a nice bright glittery white but it's still annoying me.

Spent the afternoon with the room spinning and nausea so might be why my skin is playing up. Doing a big online order now.

Any nice Christmas releases around?

I like the Ren ones (the bath stuff.) and Bobbi Brown have a gorgeous eyeshadow palette if anyone likes metallics.

Jedstre · 29/10/2019 21:55

Hi Enid (JD with slight name change). Funny I was just thinking yesterday I hadn’t seen you on here for a while.
Not S&B but I think I’m definitely hitting peri. Periods pretty erratic at the moment......

EnidButton · 30/10/2019 20:44

Hi jed That sounds like a pain, hope you're not having too many other symptoms.

My look fantastic order came so spent this afternoon doing face masks and had a very bubbly bath. Still feeling rough etc but look much better so feel better in myself. If that makes sense. Turns out I really do need the clay masks. When I started using them ages ago I think they were just an extra but now I can really see the difference after using one. Glamglow on nose and Vichy grey on forehead and chin. Then Elemis papaya all over and Skyn eye gels to finish. I wasn't sure about repurchasing the Glamglow but after 2-3 weeks without it I could tell what a difference it made to the SFs. All pretty much gone again after one use so think I'll get the big pot next time.

That was a me me ramble. Blush

EnidButton · 30/10/2019 21:03

"That sounds like a pain". Just realised how flippant that sounds, sorry Jed. I meant more the unpredictability of when a period might start etc rather than peri as a whole. Flowers

SallieSallow · 31/10/2019 18:23

I’m in peri too (not Peru as my autocorrect wants to say Grin) and it is a pain, for me though it is just unpredictable periods and weight gain so I’m getting off fairly lightly so far.

I like a good clay mask but wary at the moment as I’ve started back on tret so think they might be too drying.

EnidButton · 31/10/2019 19:28

The Vichy one is non-drying. Main reason I like it as usually they're too much for my skin. If you really want to use one, that's a good one. Only ever used on t-zone so cant say what it's like elsewhere. Feel like you already tried it though Sallie?

Just reading the 'products that have changed your life' thread. Good answers but the posters saying they spread Vaseline all over their faces every night are giving me the horrors! Suppose it is Halloween 🎃 👻

SallieSallow · 31/10/2019 21:47

I have tried the Vichy one Enid and do like it but worried it might be a bit much when I’m using tret and P50 at the moment as well. Suppose I could try a little bit on my snout 🐽

I have to steer clear of the Vaseline threads as I hate the slimy texture of it, the thought of slathering it on my face gives me the horrors too 👻 ☠️🧟‍♀️

EnidButton · 01/11/2019 00:47

I remember doing it when I was around 13/14 for god knows what reason, but I'd look like 🧟‍♀️ if I did it now!

Yes, if you're not in desperate need of a mask then it's best to err on the side of caution. (I should write that on my own mirror)

Jedstre · 01/11/2019 09:43

Thanks Enid (didn’t sound at all flippant).
I love your multi masking!

I’m the same as Sallie using tret so trying to keep the rest of routine fairly simple and worried that a clay mask will dry my skin too much. I bought a small pot of glamglow one but I haven’t tried it yet. Saying that I seem to be tolerating tret great at the moment. I probably need to increase my usage now. I’ve just been using a couple of times a week.

SallieSallow · 01/11/2019 18:10

I’ve been doing ok with tret too Jedstre but only been using it once a week, am going to chance 2x from next week onwards.

EnidButton · 01/11/2019 21:18

Jed The Glamglow is very 'harsh' (can't think of a better word, 'strong' maybe?) So definitely go easy on that. Quite a few people get very red patches after it. I've had a Rudolph nose once or twice afterwards.

I need someone to do a full scientific study into the phenomenon that is having lovely clear bright skin right up until about 1-2 weeks before an event. 🧐 I'm going to blame hormones the bastards but the timing is so bad every single time.

I have a Skinesis sheet mask that I haven't used yet as it contains hyaluronic acid but as it's just a mask (and it was a freebie) I'll risk it. Came with a weird face massager thing that that you roll up either side of your jaw. It's so tight but does wonders for my muscles there as I'm a teeth clencher 😬! Don't think it'll do much else tbh.

EnidButton · 01/11/2019 21:21

This thing www.sarahchapman.com/facialift-face-massage-roller/

Has good reviews so I'll give it a go but wouldn't pay £30 for it.

Jedstre · 02/11/2019 17:21

Enid I have that Sarah Chapman gizmo Grin. I’ve had it a few years. It was free with purchase when her skincare range first came out.

EnidButton · 03/11/2019 18:53

Jed Do you use it? I keep forgetting.

Something has annoyed my skin and all I can think of is the new shampoo and conditioner from my hairdresser has salicylic acid which I avoid like the plague on my skincare. Spots are small individual ones but bright red so not hormonal. Also are along hairline and sides of neck. Shame as I quite liked the products. At least I've worked the cause out, was concerned my mild acne had come back. Cicaplast is working overtime.

Jedstre · 03/11/2019 21:33

I used it this morning Enid because you reminded me Grin. It sits in the drawer along with quartz roller thing, another GWP with aromatherapy associates something or other.

ClientListQueen · 03/11/2019 22:26

Not much going on here. Slathering myself in hustle butter as I had a wrist tattoo touched up and a back tattoo. 6hrs later I was regretting my life choices Grin
I'm very tempted by the Tati palette after seeing Wayne Gods review it. Also the innisfree micro mascara has become my most used, it is just for lower lashes on me but it has the most perfect tiny brush ever and doesn't smudge

SallieSallow · 04/11/2019 18:19

Enid there is an Elemis TSV coming up on Qvc, it’s available now online if it’s of any interest?

www.qvcuk.com/.product.239350.html?source=cht&cm_mmc=Email--TPRE--Elemis_20191104_TPRE_CAMP15946-1_2110802724_20191104-_-CELL147212

Even if not it’s worth having a look at the Elemis range on the website as they’ll have other offers on as well.

EnidButton · 05/11/2019 15:15

Sallie I saw that but had forgotten again, thank you!

Queen That palette does look nice, especially the glittery (?) shimmers (??) on the top row.
