Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17 Thread 18

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Excuse the unfinished post!

On the left is SkinAqua Moisture Gel. I hadn't used this before but liked the idea of having something a bit like Biore Watery essence but a little more moisturising. And indeed, that's what it is - still contains alcohol but not as much as Biore and not as drying.

In the middle is the Canmake Mermaid SPF 50 - lovely texture, a good primer effect, I think this would suit most skins.

On the right is the updated SkinAqua Moisture Milk. It feels identical to the one I've been using for a year or so. It's easily the most moisturising of the lot, and I would think too greasy for oily skins (although it suits my dry skin perfectly).

I'd happily use the SkinAqua Milk on its own without moisturiser for a quick dogwalk etc but need a little more Moisture with the other 2.

Hope that's of interest to someone!

SallieSallow · 18/10/2019 18:19

Thank you Tsmummy are the skin aqua ones from biore then? I’m in the market potentially for a winter spf, still want factor 50 but something a bit more moisturising than frezyderm especially now I’m back on tret. I found the biore one I tried (bright milk) very drying but wondering if the moisture milk might fit the bill.

I’ve given up on eye cream as a lot of them make my eyes itchy/watery and I’ve never found one that makes much difference. I do still use the alpha h eye gel but just as instant wake up/refresher in the morning, it doesn’t give long term results.

Tsmummy08 · 18/10/2019 21:54

Sallie No - I was looking for a less drying alternative to Biore Watery Essence (which I sometime use) and the SkinAqua Moisture Gel fits the bill. I'd probably only use it in the spring/summer as I need more moisture in the winter, which is where the Moisture Milk comes in. The Canmake was recommended by Bo I think (?) and is indeed lovely Smile I'll use that under makeup...

In other news I've got stinging tret face and just got some of the Cheeky Wipes makeup remover cloths which I think someone recommended here? They're bloody lovely! My rough, old flannels are heading for the bin! I'm sure they haven't been helping the stinging and soreness I've had since starting tret again a few weeks ago.

SallieSallow · 19/10/2019 10:08

Thank you Ts I’ve ordered the moisture milk and some cheeky wipes with flamingos on them Grin as my facecloths were getting a bit rough and scrubby too.

My tret face isn’t too bad yet but I’ve only used it once so far....

Tsmummy08 · 19/10/2019 12:10

Hope they work for you Sallie - I've got the Llamas :)

CJDoesTheJackal · 21/10/2019 10:10

Hi Bo. The Neutrogena acne face wash my now 16 year old has been using for 2 years doesn't seem to agree with my 14 year old. He has had some sort of reaction in that he's got a sore patch by his nose, and it makes his face sting (obviously as soon as he told me this I told him to stop using it). He doesn't have much acne at all so we thought it was working well. He's shooting up fast now so it wouldn't surprise me if he gets more spots. Do you have any other recommendations for a gentle cleanser for him?

Thank you x

botemp · 21/10/2019 11:01

CJ, if he's not got much spots now there's no indication he may stand to actually develop more later. Some are just lucky but a BHA cleanser (with fragrance as well I think) could be too drying and comprising barrier health to normal otherwise unproblematic skin. I know your boys are heavily into sports, do they wash (with or without cleanser) their face more often because of that too?

The Cerave hydrating cleanser would be good as it's about as inoffensive as it gets and doesn't dry the skin out at all, and even though I'm not a fan of in shower use, I know teenage boys are unlikely to change that and this one will work well in shower.

If he does get spots later on probably worth looking into Paula's Choice calm 1% if he genuinely has sensitive skin or the 2% gel topically (easier to use for teenagers).

CJDoesTheJackal · 21/10/2019 11:21

Thanks Bo. He's not v sporty these days (used to play football. Runs now and then, sporadically getting into gym. DS1 is now into week that lifting). Basically they shower once a day. I got them into washing their faces in the Summer because of SPF use.

I'm pretty sure I tried that Cerave and it aggravated my skin. Maybe the Costs morning face wash I use would be good?

botemp · 21/10/2019 11:31

I'm not familiar with Costs, can you link the INCI?

I'm not sure how heavy your other ds is on the lifting, but there is some correlation between intensive lifting (especially in teenagers) and acne. Has to do with hormones, testosterone levels.

OP posts:
CJDoesTheJackal · 21/10/2019 11:34

Thanks Bo. I meant the Cosrx Low pH cleanser. Darned autocorrect.

botemp · 21/10/2019 11:40

It's another BHA cleanser, although gentler, but there's still a risk there that he's not responding well to that.

Avene extremely gentle cleanser (I think that's the name) may be a safe option?

OP posts:
CJDoesTheJackal · 21/10/2019 11:55

Thanks. I'll take a look.

Yes, DS2 is lifting quite heavy, for his age.

Karcheer · 21/10/2019 15:50

Hello,

My Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Lotion Exfoliant arrived today, I've still a little of the Clinique left, so I'm wondering if i should finish that and the start the Paulas choice or overlap them, one in the morning one in the eve... as i think i should use PC less?

My skin is still doing fine, definitely less flaky, but a little more congested i think.

Think i'll order the Retinoid next after I've used the new Toner for a few days...

botemp · 21/10/2019 16:36

At most you should be using the Paula's Choice BHA 2-3x a week at night. Some very oily people can see the benefits of using it more than that but that's exception more than rule. I think it would be fine to introduce PC while finishing up the Clinique. Give that a few weeks before moving on to the next.

Then, sunscreen before retinoid, if you're going for the Dermatica option you need to be using SPF 50 daily. I ordered the Altruist SPF 50 for myself this week, I'll let you know how it is on the face as it would be an interesting one for you as it's in a large packaging and made in the UK so has a smaller footprint in comparison to most other preferred sunscreens on here. It's also very affordable.

Karcheer · 21/10/2019 16:39

Thanks @Botemp yes id be interested to hear how you get on with that. I'm regularly using the SPFs i have but i know they aren't really strong enough 25/30 - but better than the nothing i was using before.

botemp · 21/10/2019 16:45

It's great that you're getting into the daily habit of using them, that's usually the hardest part for most. A switch to SPF 50 should therefore, hopefully, be an easy one. Just a matter of finding one you like.

OP posts:
Karcheer · 22/10/2019 12:01

I used the bha last night and I’m amazed how much better my skin looked this morning already! I won’t use it again now until Friday, but I’m shocked what a difference one night has made.

botemp · 22/10/2019 17:45

Yeah, the Paula's Choice BHA really is exceptionally good. I get quite annoyed when people dismiss it and say just get any BHA, it's such a well formulated product and economic in use.

If you've got sebaceous filaments on your nose the fifty shades of snail technique is great and extremely satisfying. Just don't do it too often, I only needed to do it twice (a few weeks apart) and regular acid use since has kept it clear ever since.

OP posts:
Karcheer · 22/10/2019 22:06

That sounds good.
Do you recommend a clay mask?
I assume I can use my Clinique balm cleanser?

ClientListQueen · 22/10/2019 23:44

Verso is on my eyes! What a gorgeous texture
I love the paulas choice BHA, I prefer the gel? I think it is to the liquid. Only because the liquid smells like nail polish remover to me Grin

ClientListQueen · 23/10/2019 12:45

Ooh and my new palette arrived. Colour pop smoke show, grey palettes are so unusual and I can't wait to try it

I’ll be interested in what you make of the Altruist SPF Bo. I’m using canmake mermaid as mentioned by TSmummy above which is pleasant enough. I’m alternating with Biore Bright milk. It’s nowhere near as drying as it used to be since they’ve changed the formula, which isn’t good for me. I loved its primer like finish and don’t think I’ll ever find anything as good again Sad.

karcheer I’ve done the 50 shades of snail routine a few times. It leaves your skin lovely and soft and clear looking. A few people like the Vichy clay mask. L’Oréal do some clay masks too. Una Brennan ‘Superfacialist’ (available in Boots) does a good clay mask. You don’t need to spend a lot on one.
