🐌 Fantastic Skincare: Shitting About All Day Discussing Co Dictionary

Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17 Thread 18

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Yes 101 and not noticed it changing at all

Outtheforest · 13/12/2019 08:21

I've increased the BHA to every other day and while no dramatic changes my skin is looking slightly less discoloured/full of random blackheads.
Planning to try the fiftyshadesofsnails method at the weekend. Is this likely to cause any undesirable consequences? I've a Christmas party Saturday night so unsure if I should hold out until Sunday

SallieSallow · 13/12/2019 11:42

Glad you’re seeing some improvements Out whilst some people like Karcheer do see a dramatic difference very quickly a lot of us find it takes weeks or months, and because it’s gradual you don’t ever really get the ‘wow’ factor but it’s still definitely worth persevering. I think (because I used to do it!) a lot of people give up on new routine/product without ever giving it a proper chance. I was even worse as used to add or move onto something else looking for the holy grail ‘wow’ and just ended up confusing my skin and making it worse.

I’ve not done the snail routine for a while but other than my skin going slightly pink (which went away within an hour or so) didn’t have any undesirable consequences. With it being your first time though maybe best wait till Sunday just in case.

EnidButton · 13/12/2019 18:09

Thanks Queen.

Karcheer · 13/12/2019 18:27

@SallieSallow i think it's quite addictive, I'm having to be very strict not to add in anything else and take it slow.

@botemp sorry you asked me about the SPF the other day and i forgot to reply. i really like it. it's much lighter than clinique city wear 25 that i had been wearing (i always felt like i had a lot of make upon),whereas the Purito i can't tell i have it on (I'm using a good sized pea size). it also feels much finer than the clinique - more silk like.

SallieSallow · 16/12/2019 18:24

How did you get on with the snail routine @outtheforest? 🐌🐌🐌

Outtheforest · 17/12/2019 14:32

@SallieSallow I didn't get round to it and now realised I left my face mask at home and am away for work until Christmas eve Blush might have to be bold and try it then and pray for no consequence

botemp · 17/12/2019 17:22

Thanks, Karcheer, sounds promising, I'll toss it in with my next Vit C order with timeless. I usually follow the Japanese guidelines for sunscreen application when using Asian suncreens. Which is thin line down both index and middle finger, apply, then repeat to apply a second layer.

Blue, random question, assuming you have the advent calendar I think you have, how is the Surratt eyelid komugi thing? Sticky? Shiny?

OP posts:
SallieSallow · 17/12/2019 19:13

I think you should be fine Out but maybe wait till after Christmas now just in case...

That spf does sound good Karcheer I might give it a try too next time I’m doing a timeless order.

Redandblue11 · 17/12/2019 20:19

Hi all, I occasionally lurk here, never quite took the plunge in many of the things on the very good fact sheets by *bo other than no washing face in shower, spf, and other couple of basics. Stripped back the creams I was using to very basic stuff after some redness all good now.
But the a couple of weeks ago I got lactic acid 5% and rosehip oil from the ordinary and I can see an improvement on my skin texture (I assume is the lactic acid)
But just read here some stuff about a Deciem debacle... what is that about? I could not find anything, just wondering as I am very slow to follow this so first time using their products.
Thanks!

botemp · 17/12/2019 20:27

The ordinary is a rather long tale, it was covered extensively in the media (think racked had a lot of articles with timelines?) You should be able to find some info, it mostly revolves around now deceased Brandon Truaxe.

I mainly don't recommend the ordinary because their formulations aren't consistent and a lot of us had them go off on us. They went into turbo drive launching unnecessary product after unnecessary product instead of tweaking and working on consistency. Additionally they're not as economical as they appear as you go through them really quickly and you're encouraged to use a lot of their products together. Thirdly, during all the craziness a lot of blind doors review came out and staff were treated appallingly in a really hostile environment, and it wasn't just down to the CEO it was a culture that was fostered from the top, that still reside there.

*glass doors not blind doors

OP posts:
SallieSallow · 17/12/2019 21:04

Agreeing with Bo re Deciem, I still feel sad about Brandon and the whole way that was handled has left a bad taste.

Product wise I did find the rosehip oil quite good but it’s hard to go wrong with that Smile pretty much everything else like Bo said seemed to be poorly formulated and packaged, even with the small sizes the products seemed to go off very quickly after opening.

If you like the lactic acid Red it’s worth having a look at other brands, there are loads out there now doing AHA toners which are equally as good if not better value for money than The Ordinary.

botemp · 17/12/2019 21:14

Lactic acid is quite difficult at the moment actually as regulation around it changed. I'm guessing it might be more readily available in the UK again in 2021 going by today's news.

This is a very sanitised (but by corporate standards a lot more transparent than most, but it barely scratches the surface of what went on and certainly minimises the issues at the Deciem company unrelated to BT) article, it gives an impression with a good timeline anyhow. It's a relatively new article, some acknowledgements of things I hadn't heard before/were only speculated about.

In more exciting news, one of my Pat McGrath lipsticks got shipped 🤩 I really was overly optimistic in thinking it would get here by Christmas back in November... I'm not even keeping fingers crossed for both of them to get here by New Year's.

OP posts:
Redandblue11 · 17/12/2019 21:15

Oh thank you!
Sallie which lactic acid do you recommend?

Redandblue11 · 17/12/2019 21:16

Cross post with bo re lactic acid

botemp · 17/12/2019 21:23

Lactic acid was never all that popular (it doesn't smell very nice and is difficult to mask), but it can only be sold at percentages under 10% and no concentration with a pH lower than 5 which makes it pretty much useless as an acid exfoliator, in theory, it'll do something but very slowly. The ordinary is known not to adhere to regulations though, they sold retinol strengths into the EU at concentrations that weren't allowed to be sold here, it was dodgy grey area, this might be the same.

I'd look at other AHAs if you like lactic you'll probably like PHA.

bo I'm still waiting on my PM lipstick. Have my fingers crossed it might just get here before the festive season is over. It's the kind of shade I wear around Xmas.

Talking of make up, I bought the CYO foundation to try. Shade looks good (although their shade range is poor) and the bit I dabbed on over my makeup felt nice. Will try it properly tomorrow.

Outtheforest · 18/12/2019 08:33

Realised I've also forgotten my usual suncream which is not great as my current location is 4 hours from the nearest city, and its bloody hot. I've found some garnier baby suncream which will have to do although will probably lead to a break out.
I also found some LRP effaclar lotion astringent which I bought while waiting for my paulas choice BHA to arrive. Anybody any experience with it? Seems to have BHA also so I'm wondering if using it on the days I'm not using PC would be a good way to adapt my skin more slowly?
It would be good to use it up somehow as its hardly used at all. Having three "homes" certainly makes keeping track of products more confusing Blush

BlueSkyAtChristmas · 18/12/2019 14:00

@botemp yep, I received the surratt lid lacquer in Kumugi. I was excited to try it as I love the surratt smokey eye baton and also like a cream eyeshadow. Honestly? It’s weird! It’s like thinner Vaseline and within 5 minutes of application it shifts around and creases. It makes your lids look glossy... I’ve tried it alone with only mascara and it makes me look washed out (but I am fair skinned). I’ve played with it using other makeup (eyeliner etc) I’ve found it impossible to work with.

The positives of the lid lacquer is that it’s not sticky. It’s hydrating, probably only temporary though. The kumugi is a good neutral colour. It looks fashionable- very Vogue editorial. Unfortunately it did not make me look like a model Hmm

I can imagine the more popping colours looking great on dark skin. Or for an Instagram selfie before it starts creasing.

I have relegated it for use on non-makeup days at home.

BlueSkyAtChristmas · 18/12/2019 14:30

Update on my new regime thanks to you ladies Wink

Pm routine:

I’m still enjoying the votary cleansing oil, it seems to do a good job of removing makeup and SPF. However the foaming Malin & Goetz cleanser is drying and I’ve ordered the Cerave recommended by @botemp Heads up that Cerave hydrating cleanser is only £6.75 with free delivery at Look Fantastic. What amazing value!

To combat the dryness, immediately after I’m spritzing with Queen of Hungary mist. Then the Algenist serum (doesn’t really feel it does anything but maybe that’s normal when hydrating your skin??). I really like the Dr Dennis Gross exfoliating moisturiser- it feels and looks like it’s working. Skin looks and feels a bit smoother.

The Herbivore oil is patted on lightly and gives a nice feeling. I also put bbrow oil on brows (not sure it does anything but it makes them soft) and malin and Goetz lip moisturiser. I’m using the eye cream if they’re dry, otherwise I leave until morning.

Am routine:

Dermalogica daily superfolient for cleansing followed by the Dr Sebagh vit c/ repair serum mix. To be honest this feels a bit sticky and drying when it goes on. Is that usual? When it dries and I put the Malin and Goetz vitamin E moisturiser on top, my skin feels nicely hydrated and moisturised.

I’m using the Frezyderm factor 50 SPF- hallelujah! This is a big deal as I’ve never used sunscreen outside of sunbathing and holidays Blush largely because of the greasy formulas. I never knew an SPF could be like Frezyderm- it’s a revelation. So thank you to everyone on this thread. I’m really grateful. I’m aiming to put half a teaspoon on in two layers but it feels a bit much? I’m also a bit concerned that I’m dry around the nose because my concealer is clogging a bit in that area.

BlueSkyAtChristmas · 18/12/2019 14:33

Also I’m putting the SPF on over my eye cream... is that the right way to do it?

SallieSallow · 18/12/2019 20:50

Glad you like the frezyderm and cerave Blue they’re both favourites of mine too Smile

I’m not familiar with that Vit C but yes some of them have a weird texture (sticky, slimy, gritty) so don’t think it’s unusual as such but I don’t like it. Quite a lot of us here use one from timeless which is a very watery lightweight serum, definitely needs moisturiser over the top in winter though.

I use that amount of frezyderm in two layers, I find it works best if you give it a few mins to ‘settle’ in between layers and again before makeup. And yes spf goes on after all skincare including eye cream.

Out I’ve never used effaclar, but I’d be inclined to say no as think you might be overdoing it. I think every second night is fine for BHA, there’s no need to build it up any more.

BlueSkyAtChristmas · 18/12/2019 21:21

Thanks @SallieSallow that’s really helpful

botemp · 19/12/2019 14:44

Blue, yeah, I got an email from look fantastic for 25% off and an additional 10% off but I don't need anything else from there at the moment and no free shipping (under €30) to me Sad

As much as I like the sound of barely there editorial I don't have much visible lid space, I was more wondering how shiny it is and whether it could double up as a cream blush as it has the colour of a cream blush that I love that's discontinued and is almost finished SadSad

I use 7 pumps of Frezyderm, it's probably overkill but 6 pumps should be fine, I just go for one layer with Frezyderm must try it with two for a change.

A lot of use the same products on here, at some point we just stopped trying anything new (with the exception of sunscreens, we always seem to be open to try new ones) but we've pretty much collectively settled on the same acids, retinoid, cleansers and Vit C. Slight variation in moisturiser and SPF dependant on time of year/skin type. Think our periods were in sync at one point too Blush

Out I think the LRP Effaclair is a form of BHA not BHA. I wouldn't use them together, but if you're using while without one I wouldn't see the issue. You'd just have to try and see with alternating them. Effaclair can be a bit drying though, don't know whether you're in hot and humid or hot and dry, with the latter it may leed to excess oil production in that case.

My other PM lipstick got despatched last night Enid, I ordered them a few hours apart so I'm guessing yours will be sent out today or tomorrow going by those timings.
