Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17 Thread 18

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

Tattle Life >>shudder

SallieSallow · 29/09/2019 08:07

I don’t follow any influensters, blogs etc and don’t fancy reading any of those mentioned, all sounds rather childish and ‘mean girls’.

JDSTER I’m not buying a mascara, it’s Enid and CJ that are going to try that chantecaille one. I am waiting impatiently on the new hourglass palette though Grin

SplatPancake · 29/09/2019 09:09

I’m conflicted- celebrating my new minimalistic approach to skincare + knowing there’s a box of lots of products out in the garage somewhere against the fact that there’s a new SpaceNK store just opened in my small town and it’s just been payday....

A new mascara wouldn’t be a push down a slippery slope, would it?

JDSTER · 29/09/2019 09:59

Well whoever tries the chanteicalle mascara, I’d love to hear about itGrin

botemp · 29/09/2019 10:45

I'm a terrible excuse for an influencer, don't bloody buy it unless you want to join me in the insanely priced mascara crew that everyone stares at with slightly concerned eyes and their budget mascara lashes. It's not a healthy place, and if you've got access to a SpaceNK definitely try it out first because I'd feel really bad if people spend that kind of money and then don't like it on the back of my unnatural love for it. Mascaras are so individual and all that but I've always rationalised it saved me money on not having to buy a seperate eyelash serum, delusional, I'm well aware

So is it the really expensive one (Faux Cils) or the really expensive one (Faux Cils Long Lash) .... just in case...

botemp · 29/09/2019 12:28

Ahem, the really expensive one. They're supposedly the same but the longest lash has the growth peptides in. Weirdly, I think buying the normal (cheaper) one is complete madness Confused

SplatPancake · 29/09/2019 17:06

I agree with you!

Anyway, I was unbelievably restrained. I had a good old look at Chantecaille- the mascara, and the future skin, and the Kevyn Aucoin skin enhancer, then a fiddle with the Kate Somerville Goat Cream and a sniff of some Diptyque candles, and walked out again to ponder & consider.

I don’t even recognise myself!

botemp · 29/09/2019 20:52

Ok, lemme think, what is the standard MN reply to this again? Breathe. Yeah, definitely breathe. I think a hot cup of tea is mandatory (don't ask me how you're supposed to drink that without scalding yourself, I'm just repeating top MN advice here) but I can't remember if this is the one precious time you're allowed sugar or not. Meh, just go for it. And you have to eat something or surely the shock will stunt you forever, can't remember what though, so I suggest just eat an entire buffet table's worth. And breathe.

Good to know I have an influencer career in telling people not to bloody buy things though Grin

I agree with you SplatPancake I have read the Sali threads on tattle and there doesn't seem to be any bullying in them about her. Mainly an insistence on transparency and honesty. They did point out S's occassional passive aggressiveness (which can be seen in her comments) and how they thought that her column isn't as good as it used to be.

Sali herself has been gleefully involved in the bullying of Dawn Porter (until she married a film star and she forgave them) and Giles Coren's wife, Esther Walker. Esther actually changed her account to private for a while as she was being attacked so much.

That said, I do think that Sali gives some good advice and is able to talk about beauty quite well. She has a good side too.

SplatPancake · 29/09/2019 22:04

Yeah, @botemp, get flexing those influencer muscles —we’re eagerly awaiting an emotional vlog from you denying everything and accusing all, so we can get on and discuss your shady, shady ways of doing lots of research, meeting people for exhibitions and offering considered style advice on your other channel (Parisian style threads). Grin

SplatPancake · 29/09/2019 22:05

... and suggesting cups of tea, obvs....

botemp · 29/09/2019 22:41

Yeah, and suggesting you eat! And sugar of all things! I'm a monster Shock

Meh, I've already been raked over the coals over on the MN specific Reddit already. They make Tattle look like amateurs.

I've now caught up with all 3 tattle threads and echoing the above. Undoubtedly unpleasant reading if you're the person they're discussing but it's not trolling or bullying within isolation of the the forum itself. I'm not sure what to think, I'm kind of getting the same unsettling feeling with with SH as I did with Brandon Truaxe when it became apparent he wasn't a massive dick blind to his own hypocritical behaviour, and there were deep MH issues going on and it was heading towards an inevitable crash. However, now I see the questionable behaviour (SH's) has been ongoing for many many years so the only thing I can say with any certainty is, Esther Walker is a bloody Saint and too damn good for this influencer world.

SplatPancake · 29/09/2019 23:24

Oh no, Bo, I’m so sorry re reddit. I go there occasionally for 2 true crime/forensicy type threads, which go deep - to an unbelievable extent. I can only imagine what an MN thread would be like Confused

botemp · 30/09/2019 09:43

I probably got of lightly, I was more upset hearing someone else on here got discussed for absolutely no valid reason. I wasn't that surprised about being discussed, I only lurked on that Reddit sporadically and it was becoming clear the original purpose (troll spotting) was being replaced by gossipping about MNetters you don't like for whatever reason. So it's to be expected if you drivel on long enough on here. I've had off days or moments where I could have acted or expressed myself better, same as any other MNetter. I'm also a know it all who dominates much of the conversation on long running threads. I'd probably want to discuss me too Grin

What bothered me most was that posters on there were happy enough to interact with me on here in exchange for free skincare/Parisian advice that's very much catered to an individual and then happily made fun of me over there.

Considering most of the Tattle SH threads seems to be made up of former SH beauty forum and GTL FB group members I do understand that SH experiences this as a form of personal betrayal and that to her it feels the forum isn't something that exists in isolation (evidenced by how easily she was able to identify them). In my case I didn't go all Trump and cry fake news, I took the valid criticism for what it was, countered some rather bizarre speculation and for myself I just reevaluated what I was and wasn't willing to give of myself to these threads from that point on. I'm not going to say it was a pleasant experience, but it was a definitely a learning experience.

thisenglishlife · 30/09/2019 12:16

Sorry to hear that botemp.

SallieSallow · 30/09/2019 17:14

Sad Sad Sad Bo that’s horrible. I had no idea there was a Mumsnet reddit and am not going looking for it. I used to follow the GoT ones as I lost interest in actually watching it but was nosey enough to want to know the spoilers Grin I also peek in on some of the crime ones but prefer the websleuths website which is monitored against name calling and nastiness.

I was tempted by the chantecaille especially as lash growth serums are expensive in their own right but as I don’t really need lash growth (and am wary given my past experience of them) and all non tubing mascaras seem to run/smudge on me I talked myself down. Assisted by lots of hot tea and sugary snacks of course Grin Brew Cake

TantricTwist · 30/09/2019 18:08

Oh Bo that's awful. I can't (but do now after reading Tattlelife) fathom that people would do that esp on someone giving advice and opinions on a forum like MN. That's just bonkers. Who are these people and what kind of lives must they lead to even be bothered to have the energy to do that. I find it bemusing and baffling. I feel like I want to study these strange little creatures. I hope someone does a documentary to track them down and expose their day to day lives. I would find that quite fascinating.

TantricTwist · 30/09/2019 18:10

On another note my skin is looking rather lovely after using Eve Lom time retreat radiance essence on a daily basis.

botemp · 30/09/2019 20:31

Who knew there was mudslinging on true crime Reddits, are they genuinely name calling because they don't agree about some random theories?

Trolls (not that I consider the Tattler or Reddit forums as such, so long as things stay there and aren't directed at the subject, and obviously there will be those that frequent and troll elsewhere) often are rather pitiable (and I mean that with compassion, not derision), low self esteem, poor social skills, etc. Best characterised as someone who isn't heard over all other voices and just ends up shouting louder in a sort of desperation to be seen and sudden finds that rather effective. Not necessarily a one size fits all description but often people who aren't in a good place or never truly have been. There was a good podcast on NPR about a woman in the public eye, it's a really interesting listen. I'll see if I can find it.

I think this is it, the Lindy West part:

www.thisamericanlife.org/545/if-you-dont-have-anything-nice-to-say-say-it-in-all-caps

She may have written an article on it too.

OP posts:
thisenglishlife · 30/09/2019 21:16

Rimmel, Gosh, Lash Perfect and Zelens also all have last growth boosting mascaras. Maybelline have a lash serum.

TantricTwist · 30/09/2019 22:16

Thanks for the Lindy West link Bo that was an interesting listen.

SallieSallow · 30/09/2019 22:36

Thanks Bo I’ll have a listen later.

The crime Reddits aren’t horrendous but some do point fingers in terms of who they think might have dunnit so could be slandering completely innocent people, and yes they get a bit bun fighty if someone puts a theory forward that others don’t agree with. Then you get people popping up who claim they have insider info but there’s no way of verifying who they actually are so it all gets a bit fraught.

botemp · 01/10/2019 09:40

I had a another listen as well, it's a really good 'put things in perspective' segment. Not that it excuses anything but it gives valuable insight and cuts through the black and white thinking of it all.

I'm really not sure why I'm surprised, conflict exists anywhere on the internet but I did think all those true crime Reditteers were just innocent folk typing away with a Sherlock Holmes hat on with a decorative pipe by their side in their library with walls tacked with bits of red string over evidence. I'm as shocked as I was to find out people got banned from MN for arguing with each other on the dog section Shock

Back to skincare, has anyone used both Cerave hydrating wash and the LRP Toleriane hydrating caring wash? I need to restock a few things and rather just consolidate it into one order or two at most, but it would mean trying out the Cerave and they're supposed to be similar but the INCIs aren't exactly identical either.

I think Eyeko lash alert also contains a growth serum and all Eyeko mascaras are tubers. The gosh one uses the same peptide as Chantecaille, I don't have access to Gosh here though, ie. I've never been able to try it.
