For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Grin at the description of the true crime sleuthers 🕵️‍♂️ I think the websleuths website is pretty much like that, people genuinely want to solve a mystery and/or help families keep their loved one’s case in the public eye. Reddit not so much...

And I had no idea there was a dog section here never mind people had got banned from it Shock mind you I’ve seen a fair few rows break out on AIBU over dogs so shouldn’t be surprised really.

I think I’ve used both of those washes Bo definitely the cerave one (using at the moment) but I get confused with LRPs names especially as they seem different depending on what country you’re in or buying from. The one I used was this
www.easyparapharmacie.co.uk/toleriane-caring-wash-400-mlanti-discomfort-anti-dryness-sensitive-skins-la-roche-posay.html
So if that’s definitely the one you mean, I find them much of a muchness and am happy to use either/or. The only reason I moved to cerave is because it’s easier to get hold of here and both boots and look fantastic have regular offers on. Cerave has the ceramides and HA though which I think some people here react to so steer clear of it for that reason.

I’ll have a look at eyeko lash alert, I wasn’t impressed with the eyeko ones I tried before - didn’t like the brushes and found the mascara itself a bit claggy - but lash alert wasn’t one of them I don’t think, and they were mini sizes.

botemp · 02/10/2019 08:20

Thanks Sallie that is indeed the LRP I normally use. It's substantially cheaper so I'll give it a go. I thought about getting the 80ml size but that's €6 to €7.90 for the larger size Confused I don't always get on with HA and ceramides, fine in some products but not all, but I doubt there will be much in it and it's mostly washing down the drain.

Yeah apparently it can go a bit WW3 over shelter vs. purebreds over on the dog section 🤷 at least that was my understanding of it, never actually clicked on the dog section to verify this.

@SallieSallow I use Eyeko lash alert and I do like the fact it doesn't smudge on me although it'll run out soon. However as an experiment I bought from Primark their Wonderlash for £3 and it's great, although I do have to use eyelash curlers. I had to give DD my Benefit Bad girl bang mascara which despite having a lovely wand and curling and lengthening my lashes beautifully it always smudged on me (it doesnt seem to on her though) and the Primark one doesn't as yet.

I ran out of my Murad clarifying face wash a while ago so started using my DC Neutrogena visibly clear spot proofing face wash and my skin likes it as it's not drying at all so I'll be sticking to that for the time being.

SallieSallow · 02/10/2019 13:43

Yes dogs seem to be a big bone (ha!) of contention over on AIBU so can imagine a dog specific board would get quite intense 🐶

I hope you get on ok with the cerave Bo I find it very bland and innocuous (which is what I want in a cleanser) same as the LRP one and like you say it mostly ends up down the drain anyway.

Tant what is the brush like on the lash alert? Photos seem to show quite a bushy curved one which is the type I don’t get on with. Mind you I’ve got 2 unopened DHC mascaras as well as one currently in use so I shouldn’t be buying more anyway Blush

TantricTwist · 03/10/2019 10:04

@SallieSallow I disliked the eyeko brush a lot at first because I found it way too curved. However I've got used to it. I tend to use it facing outwards.

SallieSallow · 03/10/2019 15:08

Thanks Tant I can never get on with curved brushes especially if they’re bushy, I just can’t seem to control them properly especially for lower lashes and end up making a right old mess Blush

And I’m going to park mascara shopping for now given I have a stash to get through....

cloud1183 · 06/10/2019 10:40

Yesstyle have a sale on at the moment and I’ve ordered Cosrx galamycate toner, cosrx spot patches, etude house lash serum and laneige water sleeping mask. Has anyone else ordered off yesstyle and if so, how long does it take for the products to arrive?

I also recently bought La Roche Posay effaclar duo at the recommendation of people on MN and it’s cleared my skin up a hell of a lot- combined with having to go back on the pill as my acne came back when I came off it 😕

botemp · 06/10/2019 10:56

I've never ordered from Yesstyle as their free shipping threshold is over the tax exempt threshold here and I always get smacked with a high bill for import taxes and VAT that's mostly admin costs. I think it's less hassle in the UK though, and potentially Yesstyle is putting down fictional values to avoid it. Generally from Korea it's about 2-3 weeks but I've had things arrive quicker and later.

I'm glad effaclair is working for you, it seems to be either great or not so much and drying. Have you considered Differin?

Queen, I'm guessing you're already aware but just in case you're not, I saw in hot and flashy's latest video that your beloved CYO foundation has now been relaunched under the soap and glory brand. Same formula, INCI, and finish.

OP posts:
cloud1183 · 06/10/2019 11:14

Thanks botemp- that’s good to know re. Yesstyle, I’ll see what happens but for now I’m looking forward to trying my products.

I’ve never tried differin but the effaclar has done the trick in preventing any cystic spots from appearing. I’m 35 and tried coming off the pill thinking I may have grown out of the acne but clearly not 😕 I was getting some horrendous spots on my chin and cheeks which started really getting me down, so I reluctantly went back on the pill.

botemp · 06/10/2019 11:22

The pill does seem to help with hormonal acne so it is annoying. Apparently acne is more common in your thirties into forties, I'm not sure when anyone actually grows out of it though.

Only reason I mentioned Differin is that people who get on well with effaclair duo and finding it no longer as well anymore do well with a switch to Differin.

YesQueen · 06/10/2019 11:29

@botemp I saw it on another YouTube video! I can't seem to find it in the UK though which is annoying. But I have a small large backup stash. My plan is to see how long a bottle takes me to finish and then stock up before the end of the year when it goes
I wore revolution conceal and hydrate this week which is really nice, this is it

SallieSallow · 06/10/2019 13:37

I never bought anything from CYO but it’s a bit strange how quickly it came and went from Boots, especially as it seemed really popular.

I’ve never ordered from yes style Cloud I’ve only used the Cosrx BHA toner & got it from a uk seller on eBay.

Timeless U.K. sent me an email saying they’re not too sure what’s going to happen post brexit though they’ll try to ensure no additional costs are passed on to customers. Might be a marketing ploy but I bought a Vit c serum just in case as I’m about 2/3 way through the one I’m using.

I thought about doing a pre-Brexit EPP order but there’s nothing I really need as stocked up on look fantastic quite recently when they had some good offers on.

botemp · 06/10/2019 14:16

It looks lovely Queen, how do you do that blur everything but the face in your photo?

When did you get that email Sallie? I found one from Timeless in my spam a week or so ago. It was directed at EU customers, weirdly that made a claim that skincare has no tariff for import into the EU which is news to me although that's probably different than the VAT/import taxes bills I've received in the past. They were offering special pre Brexit slots to assure they sent you the freshest stuff possible by Brexit date but I've only just bought a new one so I'm not sure how sensible it is. I'd probably finish it up withing 6 months but only just. I'm also unsure if Brexit is actually happening again? I know BJ is a wild card but isn't it looking more likely that it'll be another extension?

I'll see how it goes, if outside the EU timeless can't charge me UK vat taxes so the price will drop and keep it under the threshold for import fees. But Brexit chaos may significantly increase the shipping rates. I can order from Amazon us though third party sellers, also below import threshold so it actually comes in slightly cheaper than timeless UK but there's a risk of it being old stock. Amazon will refund in those cases but it's annoying as I tend to time my Vit C restock when I'm just about to run out.

@botemp it's a blur app off the App Store, I use it because it doesn't filter but if a background looks messy you can just colour it out Grin

YesQueen · 06/10/2019 14:21

I've broken this open today.. will see how it goes!

botemp · 06/10/2019 14:24

Actually it was Tuesday, I think we got the same email. It was a bit wishy-washy, 'currently seeking clarification' and 'we hope' you don't have to pay import taxes doesn't inspire much confidence. Perhaps it is marketing capitalising on people's anxiety 🧐

Which app specifically Queen, although this is probably a useless exercise as I'll soon discover like with any other app of interest it's only available in the Apple app store

OP posts:
SallieSallow · 06/10/2019 14:29

I got the email on 1st Oct Bo but it went to an email address I don’t check all that often so only read it today, sounds like it was the same one you got.

As timeless are a US company I’m not sure that Brexit would make any difference for UK orders but as I’m not that far off needing a new one thought I might as well order just in case. And it does look like there might be another extension though I’ve run out of the mental energy to follow all the shenanigans closely.

HMArsey · 06/10/2019 14:29

Can I ask a question? I'm hoping I won't be in trouble for not reading every word of the linked docs first. Blush

The handy weekly skincare diagram in the Anti Ageing document is v helpful, thanks, but I had never thought to apply serum etc AFTER retinol because I presumed it diluted it. Am I wrong?

YesQueen · 06/10/2019 14:31

It's actually named Blur (imaginatively!!)

SallieSallow · 06/10/2019 14:34

Sorry Bo cross posted there yes exactly the same email you got, and yes quite likely a marketing ploy. It worked on me Grin but I would have been re-ordering within the next few weeks anyway.

I’d be interested in the app too YesQueen I downloaded a ‘pixel’ one when I was thinking of sharing some photos on here but didn’t find it very good.

SallieSallow · 06/10/2019 14:34

Oops cross post again Grin will check that out thanks YesQueen

botemp · 06/10/2019 14:42

Welcome HM, strongest active first, it's usually what you're paying the most for but it does depend on formulation. So a heavy retinoid cream that's very occlusive should probably be the only thing you use if you want to get the most out of it. Anything applied after will be unlikely to travel through the occlusive barrier and while you certainly can layer serum underneath it, that lessens the effect of the retinoid. Do take note the anti ageing diagram is a bit maximalist and takes in everything you could potentially use which has some or suspected anti ageing performance, and generally we practice a less is more approach on here.

Sallie, I don't think Timeless UK is actually part of Timeless the brand in the US, they just have an exclusive license to sell it here alongside some Korean and Japanese skincare which I suspect was the original business and probably still operates as such on another website. They also seem to run the Timeless EU website I ordered from last time. I don't think the import/export should be affected by it too much unless there are customs delays but I think it is flown in and I don't expect the levels of delay there as with ports and the tunnel. Getting things to customers in the EU may become more difficult and subject to tax over a certain amount and if there's a fuel shortage nothing is getting anywhere but a Vit C serum isn't exactly top priority in that scenario anyhow.
