Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17 Thread 18

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Hi all,
Bo I actually watched a few of that Dr's videos before getting my tear troughs done (including the one about potential blindness - which forearmed me with questions for the Dr who did it, so I felt more confident). Mine is definitely hanging around longer than expected and I'm in two minds about getting it done again because my bags are fairly pronounced and I think that financially/aesthetically it makes more sense to save up for a lower blepharoplasty in a few years. I don't regret the experiment though.

I'm definitely finding a new Botox practitioner though as I've lost faith in the one who did the last couple for me.

I'm also considering some brow work - has anyone had ombre brows? It's basically shading rather than microblading (from what I understand)... probably need both to be honest but the person I was hoping to use is moving away...

Final outcome of the DE vit C saga - SpaceNK sent me a new one with a use-by date of April 2020 and added £10 of points to my account as an apology. Won't be getting it again though.

botemp · 24/09/2019 13:22

Well that's a better offering than CJ got, bit inconsistent there SpaceNK. I've been following the latest esteelaundry expose on Instagram (apparently SpaceNK are crappy employers too) and also saw mention of DE in previous stories (unrelated to current expose but who knows, may still trickle in). Didn't realise that issues with DE have been widespread for quite some time. Apparently selling out of date stock isn't uncommon and they apparently will delete any SM comments making mention of it and aren't very helpful in the CS department Hmm

Yeah, I appreciate his videos, Ts, they really help navigate what to consider before treatment. Had seen a couple previously, but I think the filler one really resonated as I always struggled to believe that people were purposefully going for this overly bloated look, even the 'you lose sight of your own features' reasoning didn't really cover it for me. That it's just dispersing makes a lot more sense to me and would make it far too unpredictable to commit to for me. And what no one ever mentions, yes you can dissolve filler (if it's still in the same area) but it's very very painful.

I think of all the semi permanent brows I've seen micropigmentation (like Queen has, although are you wearing makeup on the brows there as well?) looks the most appealing to my eyes. I just get a bit frustrated that the ideal brow seems like a template no one really deviates from and it suits a certain makeup look more than others.

Sallie, I've already built back up and am now using it nightly without buffering (usually take Sunday off). When I started at first I didn't have an exact ratio, just using the recommended pea sized amount after moisturiser, then swapped to moisturiser after Tret and finally just Tret on its own once my skin had gotten used to it.

SallieSallow · 24/09/2019 18:54

Thanks Bo I’m going to start back up with tret next week I think (travelling this week/weekend). I’m really liking P60 and using nightly now so hoping I can still use both even if I drop P60 back down to every second night.

I think I’ll need to be careful with fillers as they’ve made such a difference to my mouth it would be easy to get carried away. Not sure if I’ll have more Botox as whilst I like the subtle effect on my eyes I think my forehead is actually a bit too smooth now, I didn’t have lines or 11s etc in the first place & it wasn’t my target area but think if I have more it might end up looking really unnatural/obvious. I do have a fringe though Grin

I’ll have a look at ombré brows, another thing that puts me off microblading is the aftercare and having them all itchy and peely, wonder if that’s the same with the ombré.

SplatPancake · 25/09/2019 23:10

Hello!
Just checking in again. After a crazy summer (work, kids, moving house), on top of a 6-month skin terror, I necessarily had to take things back to complete basics (i.e. I lost my big box of skincare in the move)

So, since mid-August all I’ve been using is:

• Dr Sam cleanser (was completely meh about it when I first got it, now like it) alternating with Body Shop camomile butter.

• A sample of Tarte maracuja oil for moisture

• And occasionally the Bioderma Factor 50 bought when using Soolantra (also misplaced 🙄)

• For the last 2 weeks, the Dr Sam night serum twice a week

My skin has not been this good in months. I was obviously overdoing it, then panicking and overreacting and over treating it. But that’s it - haven’t even needed makeup!

I am going to reintroduce a weekly simple clay mask at the weekend just for cleansing. I am definitely avoiding acids (particularly glycolic as I’m sure that was at the root of my issues ).

I’m not even feeling the need to investigate anything else. No idea how long this will last. But this teamed with the horrible things coming to light on the Estee Laundry account, and facing the incessant boxes of unnecessary s*@!; unearthed in our house move are making me reconsider mistaking a minimist approach to lots of things again. Good for the skin, good for the soul, good god the planet....

SallieSallow · 26/09/2019 20:07

Hi Splat 👋

Glad you’ve got a good skincare routine in place, I’m inclined to agree with the less is more approach too as my skin is doing well with double cleanse, P50 & HA at night, cleanse, Vit c and spf in the morning. I’ll have to add moisturiser (cerave) for winter though and want to add tret back in too, likely mixed with the moisturiser initially.

Sometimes I think I’d like to move house and leave the majority of my stuff (not just makeup and skincare) behind and just start again with the absolute basics/minimum of everything. I don’t want to purge or sort anything out though, literally just walk away & leave it Grin

YesQueen · 26/09/2019 22:35

@botemp yes I use ABH dipbrow gel as it colours the hairs (it's a mascara brush type)
My eyebrow hair is so pale!

CJDoesTheJackal · 27/09/2019 08:29

Bo I'm thinking about trying the Chantecaille mascara. Space NK have a £15 off if you spend £60 at the moment plus I have some reward points. What do you love about it? I assume it's the Faux Cils Longest Lash?

My main bug bear with all the ones I've tried is that they dry out quite quickly. So if the Chantecaille doesn't do this I'd consider the big price tag because I never finish a mascara: I always bin them after a couple of months.

Or perhaps it's my eyelashes. Anything I can use to soften them up?

Thanks.

botemp · 27/09/2019 09:30

CJ, I like that it gives really long lashes (and it does actually grow my lashes, I always have to remember not to overuse it on the bottom lashes as it goes a bit dolly) without clumping and good dark pigments. It's like my lashes but much better mascara. Not natural barely there but it's not a major plumper/volume thing. It also smells beautifully of roses even though I generally hate fragrance in anything (it's rose oil though). Tube lasts me very long (9 months-ish, maybe longer if I used it less frequently) and doesn't dry out but mascara generally doesn't dry out on me unless it's a cheapie or a travel size. Are you a pumper?

OP posts:
CJDoesTheJackal · 27/09/2019 12:45

Thanks Bo. No, not a pumper. Once in and out. One coat. Done.

Might give it a whirl.

EnidButton · 27/09/2019 15:28

Had a social media/forums break so just catching up.

I'm going to give the Chantecaille mascara a try. Was about to repurchase my usual Diorshow anyway so will be good to try a new one instead.

Hadn't heard of Estee Laundry so will check them out too. Looks very interesting.

I'm back off to my 'digital detox' (do I sound like an annoying insta beauty blogger? Grin) now. Hope everyone is well and enjoying the new season (the best one imo). 🍂

CJDoesTheJackal · 27/09/2019 20:46

Wow. Has anyone seen Sali Hughes' IG video about the bullying and trolling she's been experiencing? I thought she was referring to Mumsnet at first. I've met her once, at an event, and she was absolutely lovely and had time for everyone. She's also responded to me on IG and helped me sort an issue when Bobbi Brown weren't helping.

TantricTwist · 27/09/2019 21:02

Yes I've just finished watching it CJDoesTheJackal although not entirely sure why you thought she'd be referring to MN Confused as I've never heard anything negative here towards her.

I would love to know who said what. Sounds like she's been having a horrendous time of it. I mean why do these trolls do this, how do they even have the time and then to do it as a cyberbullying gang, just beggars belief. Nutters.

botemp · 27/09/2019 21:02

Is she calling esteelaundry trolls? They exposed some worrying stalker like behaviour done by her in their stories today. Seeking out real identities of people on several platforms for merely liking a critical comment about Charlotte Tilbury (on account of esteelaundry expose) on her IG. Not sure what is going on? Seems like two very opposing stories. Full disclosure, haven't seen SH video, so may be about something else?

OP posts:
botemp · 27/09/2019 21:05

Or did Enid hit a nerve for making fun of sounding like an annoying insta blogger Grin

OP posts:
TantricTwist · 27/09/2019 21:18

Oh Bo yes she talks about this. Interesting. I'm guessing it's the bollocks spouted on Estee Laundry to cover their users cyberbulling behaviour (or indeed their own) towards SH that pushed her into having to make her video.

TantricTwist · 27/09/2019 21:21

What seems sad though Bo is that you and many others now believe SH 'to be a worrying stalker' which by all accounts she is not, she was trying to find out who the hell her unhinged, vindictive and obsessive cyberbullies are.

botemp · 27/09/2019 21:32

I don't believe anything from anyone as fact. They're both large insta accounts with their own vested interests. Everyone has an agenda on there and will use the medium to suit their needs and write their own narratives. Neither party in this will present an objective version of events so it's pointless believing or siding with one in some internet feud. If it's truly defamation I'm sure she'll be able to pursue legal actions.

OP posts:
TantricTwist · 27/09/2019 21:42

Yes that's very true, well said.

mackerella · 27/09/2019 21:51

As far as I can tell, Sali Hughes is talking about the vile threads discussing her on tattle.life...

SallieSallow · 27/09/2019 21:58

I get Sali Hughes and Sam Bunting terribly confused (hope neither of them consider that slander Grin)

I’ve taken advantage of the Space NK 15% off to order the just released Hourglass palette. Still pricey but I do love their palettes so very much ❤️ and buy very little other makeup since I started using them.

CJDoesTheJackal · 27/09/2019 23:23

She has, apparently, been consulting with lawyers Bo. That Tattle Life is horrific. I never knew such a thing existed! (I fleetingly, at the start of the video, thought she might be referring to mumsnet as historically there have been threads about bloggers with some pretty personal posts.

SplatPancake · 28/09/2019 09:38

Ah, the classic “getting the lawyers in” move.

I don’t know, insomnia last night drove me to read those 3 SH threads on Tattle (I did not venture outside those, but if feeling brave might take a look at the Caroline Hirons thread later..)

There were a couple of personal digs, but mostly it seemed to be annoyance at her continuing to shill anti-aging moisturisers when not admitting to Botox (she’s not the only one who does that) and not being transparent about pushing brands she has relationships with. Charlotte Tilbury being one of those named in the Estee Laundry stuff during the week. Those accusations have cropped up in lots of other places —indeed SH popped up in S&B on a very similar thread last year denying any kind of paid partnerships, and that everything she did was independent, above board and honest (c.f. Caroline Hirons), blasting all of mumsnet posters as sad bullying housewives, etc. (...then roll forward to this year when she admits to having been paid by Bobbi Brown, Sunday Riley etc for some years Hmm)

And thus was born the amazing, knowledgeable warm skincare threads currently on MN! Influencer free (well, if you discount Bo’s super knowledge that is Grin)

I think everyone on this thread has been beyond influencer, for those reasons, for a very long time!

Anyway, the things SH was claiming in that distressing video just weren’t evidenced in the threads I read (posts could have been deleted I suppose) — targeting friends and family, etc. Just .... nothing (a few jibes at her husband for being a Tory and Caitlin Moran for being super irritating —I certainly agree with the latter). But nothing about her children, her address, etc.

TBH, I can’t see what lawyers would get involved for?

I’ve been more irritated by the outpouring of the “poor you, I haven’t read those threads but all those people saying vile things about you should be banned from having an opinion I haven’t actually read and you should definitely report to the police all these terrible things I haven’t read so have no idea what was actually posted but it’s awful” mob mentality type of response from all of her celeb friends on her Instagram. Makes them look like idiots (I don’t know what you’re talking about but I’m offended!)

botemp · 28/09/2019 10:27

Considering the many parties involved, the brigading back and forth, and none of the sides adding up to anything what I'd consider a full story, I did briefly consider if this was classic influencer emotional escalation for the sake of engagement, although third party engagement of esteelaundry (hardly saintly and deserving of much scrutiny itself, I would point out) is a novel twist.

All this is really just exposing how toxic social media (and by extension influencer culture) is and why I happily don't engage with it (unless you count MN, I don't because it's so archaic in user design, and apparently I'm an influencer on here so expect an identity crisis soon Shock).

Putting it all together, it looks as everyone involved is simultaneously a 'click' winner in the short term and a loser in the long term by fueling this further and hardening division lines of us vs. them, when many will simultaneously be (former disillusioned and current critical) followers, mnetters, tattlers, etc. Sigh.

OP posts:
JDSTER · 28/09/2019 19:15

I had to look up Estée laundry. Literally never heard of it Grin

salli I’d love to hear how you get on with mascara. I’ve been tempted with the £15 off at space NK but I’ve already got a few mascaras to get through.

TantricTwist · 28/09/2019 19:43

I had heard of Esteelaundry but have never engaged with it till I looked it up yesterday. It's got a very negative vibe so not something I'll be following.

I've never heard of tattle life so I'll be looking that up in a bit out of curiosity. I am bracing myself.

I had no idea SH showed up on a thread calling MNetters sad bullying housewives. Find that bizarre so off to find that although I did look up threads on SH last night and didn't come across that.

I'm a bit Confused as to why people would want to post constant negative remarks about others on something like this tattlelife (which I have as yet not read) I find the concept of that an enormous waste of time and energy.
