🐌 Fantastic Skincare: Shitting About All Day Discussing Co Dictionary

Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17 Thread 18

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Just looked back sallie to find your link for where to buy P50. Ordered ✅

AwdBovril · 17/08/2019 14:34

Oh bloody hell, I'd forgotten. I'll need to order some more Biore sunscreen too.

Sallie - if you do apply the P50 using my method, make sure your skin is properly damp. A couple of times I've forgotten to get the P50 out in readiness, so by the time I had it on my hands, my face was drying... not comfortable!
Another benefit of this technique is that I can rub any excess on my arms etc, it does seem to help a bit with KP. Although that is pretty much under control now with the weekly Korean cloth treatment. Am hoping regular use of Salux will improve it still further. AIBU in coining a new word... exfoligasm? Grin The Korean cloths are very good but I still have to make myself do it, IYSWIM. The Salux is just lovely.

JDSTER · 17/08/2019 15:12

Cani just check good buys in easiepharmacy? Wondering if I can justify £35 for free delivery Hmm

EnidButton · 17/08/2019 15:30

Quick note to say I'm feeling myself today- literally. Was given Ren Rose Otto body wash for my birthday and used it last night. Smelled gorgeous and today my skin is so soft. It feels like I used a body moisturiser. Even on my kp prone areas. Impressed. I think I'll get the bath oil I keep lusting after, now I know how nice it is.

SallieSallow · 17/08/2019 16:27

JDSTER EPP is usually cheaper than U.K. sites for Vichy, la Roche posay, Bioderma and Avene so anything from those ranges are good buys BUT that being said I usually do a snoop around on the U.K. sites first to see what offers are on, look fanstastic in particular are good with offers and discount codes. Then I decide from there, but if I’m using EPP I’ll usually bulk purchase the products I always use & am happy to stockpile - Bioderma atoderm moisturising spray, Vichy thermal water, Vichy mineral 89 and LRP cicaplast for me.

Thanks Awd I’ll remember that with your method and good idea about using excess on your body.

I looked at those salux cloths but sounds like you have to soak in a bath which I hate doing so decided against. I got some ameliorate stuff which I keep forgetting to use but my skin isn’t dry at the moment, I’ll keep them for winter.

That body wash sounds lovely Enid I’ve got a REN cleanser a friend gave me but haven’t used it yet.

AwdBovril · 17/08/2019 21:18

Ah - the Salux cloths can apparently be used just in a shower as normal. It's the Korean Italy cloths where you need a decent long soak first. I used my Salux in the shower yesterday - it's great for getting to bits you can't get to as easily, like your back, & you just wad it up for anywhere you'd usually use a sponge or something. I found it just a good balance of exfoliation. Although I will admit, they aren't cheap.

JDSTER - I usually buy a job lot of Serozinc spray, plus whatever large size of regular thermal water works out cheapest, when I order from EPP. I also really like the LRP Cicaplast baume B5, & the Cicaplast hand cream, so they're easy orders too. Cicaplast saved my bacon when I foolishly allowed myself to get sunburnt this spring (first time ever). Useful stuff.

Tsmummy08 · 18/08/2019 08:52

Hi all! Just catching up....

Congrats on your wedding Mint, wishing you every happiness for the future xx

Sallie Yes I use P50 with tret in the winter (I'm using it with Retinoil in the Summer) - I've started to use it on my hands as Bovril does, and I find it's less irritating - I may have been a little heavy-handed with cotton pads as it always stung when I used them, but is fine when applied with fingers.

CJ Enjoy Seattle - I lived there for years and loved it, go to Sephora down town near the Westlake Centre if you're still there! :)

Thanks for the recommendation on the MUR highlight palette YesQueen, it works nicely as a cheap dupe for Hourglass.

I also need some new ideas for SPFs - Frezyderm tinted is working well for me in the summer but I'd like to go back to a Japanese one for winter as the tinted ones will be too dark. However, the one I've been using (SkinAqua Super Moisture) has doubled in price since I last bought it in April (£12 to £24 for 40ml, stupid). Can anyone suggest something similar?

JDSTER · 18/08/2019 10:08

Hi TS I’ve ordered canmake mermaid sunscreen. It seems to have good reviews but mines not arrived yet. My beloved Biore UV bright milk has changed formulation this year so I’m on the hunt for a replacement.

SallieSallow · 18/08/2019 11:06

I’ve just googled Salux Awd they do look good - and no soaking in the bath! I might get one as handy for doing your back, they’re quite cheap on amazon but could be fake, reviews are almost all positive though.

TSMummy have you tried frezyderm non-tinted? I alternate between tinted and non-tinted depending on what I’m doing and what other makeup I’m wearing. I’ve also recently discovered this Bioderma one that I like.

JDSTER · 18/08/2019 14:41

I’m just relaxing with Sunday Times and Nigella Lawson is guest columnist in Style magazine. She’s recommending 3 ‘makeup must- haves’ Charlotte Tilbury mini miracle eye wand - two ended concealer, IT cosmetics CC+ illumination cream and most interestingly (to me) Essence Lash princess false lash effect mascara £3.30.

SallieSallow · 18/08/2019 16:04

IT cosmetics CC cream is very good (never tried the illumination one though) but I found colour matching tricky. Nigella is very pale isn’t she so probably easier for her than yellow me Grin Mascara sounds worth a try at that price, not for me though as I have to stick to the tubing ones only these days.

mintmagnummm · 19/08/2019 07:06

Aww thank you @Tsmummy08 x

CJDoesTheJackal · 19/08/2019 11:33

Thanks TS. We arrived back this morning at 7am. I wish I could move our house to Vancouver. Or Seattle. Either would do very nicely.

botemp · 19/08/2019 12:12

Sounds like you all had a good time CJ, any chance of it actually happening? I know you've mentioned your DH heading there often for work.

JDSTER, I use P50 and tret on alternating days and they seem to complement each other well. I only use 0.025% though, not sure if I'd want/need to use both at a higher %. I am building up to using tret nightly though, not sure where I'd fit the P50 in in the future.

TS, you can still get the skin aqua for around that price (€12) from yesstyle. Otherwise Canmake and frezyderm untinted are good alternatives. There's also a Nivea one from Japan, I'll have to look up which specific one it was.

I tried that essence mascara when it was all the rage and subsequently sold out everywhere. I wasn't a fan, it was a bit too wet for my liking (then dried up quickly) and left me with rather clumpy lashes. First mascara I tossed out prematurely as I was quite convinced it was causing irritation. Mascara is such an individual thing though, I've yet to find a cheapo one that I like and I know many have the complete opposite experience. Think Queen had it as well at the time and liked it more than me but preferred another, L'Oréal paradise IIRC.

cloud1183 · 19/08/2019 13:12

I’ve just been given some Vichy Mineral 89 and wondered if you could give me some advice where to put it in my routine. In the morning I use TO niacinamide and COSRX snail mucin, kiehls gel moisturiser and then SPF. Would it be overkill to use it as well as all this or would it go nicely with those?

In the P.M I use retinol x2 a week, an acid toner twice a week and a clay mask as and when I think I need it followed by Murad moisturiser and some rosehip

JDSTER · 19/08/2019 14:08

My P50 is being delivered tomorrow. I’ve also ordered some Jan Marini Bioglycolic Face cleanser. I’m at the end of Cosrx that I use in the morning and was looking for a replacement. Mentioned by Dr Stefanie Williams www.getthegloss.com/article/botox-and-fillers-what-dermatologists-and-aesthetic-doctors-have-done-dr-stefanie-williams and has good reviews. I got 10% off at Skincity and I like the look of pump bottle too.

cloud could you add to evening routine to add some hydration

Mascara definitely an individual thing. I didn’t get on with L’Oréal paradise. I’ve yet to find a ‘cheap’ mascara I like, so far. I see Max Factor have a new one called Lash Revival. “Max Factor’s first bamboo-extract infused mascara helps to strengthen your lashes in four weeks±, giving you a fuller, more luscious look, while the curved brush gently combs to create clump-free instant volume”

Skinfulnappies46 · 19/08/2019 16:25

Afternoon all! Just looking for recommendations. Been using face cloths to remove makeup with cleansers but they just look so dirty after washing! Not environmentally friendly to have to get rid of them often ,just don’t know what to use to clean them,or what kind of cloths to use. Seeem to be so many.

SallieSallow · 19/08/2019 17:12

Cloud I use mineral 89 at night, just slot it in before your moisturiser for some extra hydration. Think you've got quite a bit going on in the morning already by the sounds of it Grin

that cleanser sounds interesting JDSTER though more £££ than I would normally spend, good to hear what you think though as if it Does Something I may re-consider!

I think I'm just going to stick to DHC mascara now, I definitely don't get on with non-tubing ones anymore.

Skinful I got some dark coloured face cloths from Amazon, was sick of white ones looking grubby even when they were clean.

CJDoesTheJackal · 19/08/2019 17:46

Yes Bo it is possible. DH works for a huge company based in Seattle (we'll all be very familiar with them lol). They have offices in Vancouver too so either of those could be an option. But we're in the midst of GCSEs (DS1 gets results on Thursday, DS2 is about to start his) so we couldn't disrupt them for 2 years at least. TBH, not to bring politics into this thread, but it will depend on what happens post-Brexit.

Anyone else getting results on Thursday?

JDSTER · 19/08/2019 19:39

Good luck to CJ household for Thurs. We’re not at that stage yet.

sallie you’re right it is quite a bit to spend on cleanser, in for a penny, in for a pound after I’d bought P50! To be honest, a.m cleansers last me a year so per use, it won’t be much.

Anyone using DHC oil cleanser there’s 30% off in flash sale on Look Fantastic and also Eyeko mascara which is tubing I think sallie?

SallieSallow · 19/08/2019 20:51

Thanks JDSTER eyeko is tubing and I got some minis off QVC to try must be last year now but I didn’t like the applicators and found the consistency a bit globby. Think I’ll stick to DHC now as I know I get on with it.

botemp · 19/08/2019 21:29

🤞For Thursday CJ. I always forget the GCSEs come in so late in the summer. I don't blame you at all for exploring moving with Brexit on the cards. It's good to be able to have the option. My grandparents briefly moved their family to Vancouver for a year or so. They had intended to buy a chain of Korean grocery stores/supermarkets and make the move permanent but in the end it fell through. They were quite disappointed to leave again, they really had an affinity with the land there, it's quite special.

Interesting read JDSTER, I have to say I'd never think she's contending with adult acne or rosacea going by that picture. I've heard good things about the other cleanser as well from IS medical, I believe it's American. It looks quite gentle as it has so much centella asiatica (v soothing) yet still effective.

Cloud, as Sallie suggested ,night time seems the most appropriate place as snail mucin is pretty much all hydration. But do you really need additional hydration? Maybe it makes more sense to just stick it in the cupboard until the snail runs out?

Skinful, dark flannels here too, but I just massage oil cleanser in, emulsify and then rinse off. Flannel is just for dabbing dry so they don't get all that manky to begin with. Those microfibre ones are meant to be good, but not environmentally friendly as they release plastic with every wash although they do come in bamboo now but they're spendy. CJ weren't you using some other bamboo cloth of sorts (which weren't crazy expensive)?

OP posts:
EnidButton · 19/08/2019 22:00

until the snail runs out?

Or crawls out...

I'll get my coat. 😬

Good luck to your ds for Thursday CJ. GCSE and A level, (or whatever they're called now ), exam results are always around my birthday which I found very annoying as a teenager. Means I remember when they are even now. Hope he gets the results he wanted

SallieSallow · 19/08/2019 22:22

GrinGrinGrin Enid though maybe it should be slithers out... 🤔 🐌

Good luck to your DS on Thursday CJ

botemp · 20/08/2019 09:11

Obviously a snail glides out, graceful little ballerinas that they are. Although if we're stealing their mucin to slather on our faces do they actually move at all?

My birthday was always during exams or the revision week before it. Probably explains why I've never really properly celebrated it since primary school. Anyhow, happy birthday (belated or to come) Enid Cake Flowers Brew Chocolate
