Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17 Thread 18

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Has anyone tried this eye cream? I'm looking for a replacement for my Clinique All About Eyes. The texture is fine, it's not greasy or drying on me, but it's just not having any effect on my dark circles (which are my biggest eye concern at present. Plus, it's the only facial product I have that's in an open topped pot - everything else is in pumps or tubes, or at least has a very tiny opening for squirting the product out, & I just keep thinking it's probably getting more & more germy over time. I do want something that will act against wrinkles as well though - I don't have any yet but I'm 38 & it's only a matter of time...

AwdBovril · 13/08/2019 17:54

OMG congratulations Mint - I didn't read the last few posts before I posted!

SplatPancake · 13/08/2019 20:16

I’ve been looking at the Instagram of Dr Anjali Mahto, a Harley St dermatologist. Lots of interesting, considered, posts on all aspects of skincare. She is refreshingly honest on state of her own skin (currently on Roaccutane for acne), influencers, nutrition bollocks, racism, feminism, etc.

One thing she did post on which intrigued me was on “dermatologists” in general, and what to expect from s visit, their training, when they decide to specialise, who can call themselves a derm, etc. Apparently you don’t have to be a specialist to set yourself up as one - you can check the General Medical Council’s website to check your doctor’s credentials. You probably knew this ....

Sam Bunting is not recognised by the GMC as a dermatology specialist.

SallieSallow · 14/08/2019 18:42

I haven’t tried that one Awd and don’t have dark circles (my issue was droopy eyelids hence the Botox!) so not sure what would be best to tackle those, have heard a few people on here mention a Kheils one but can’t remember who has used it or what the verdict was.

I don’t have Instagram Splat but Dr Anjali sounds interesting, I’ll see if she’s got a web page or blog. I’ve never been a massive fan of Dr Sam, I can’t take to her for some reason, & I’ve gone off her further since she started selling/promoting her own skincare range.

EnidButton · 14/08/2019 22:07

I use the Kiehls Avocado eye cream Awd and Sallie. Mainly because I needed something very rich as my eyes were getting dry. (I was allergic to something in the Clinique one.) It sinks in quickly and makes a brilliant base for make up. Also has a very faint green tint which brightens the area slightly. I've got hereditary dark 'circles' on the inner corners and haven't found anything that helps much other than colour correcting makeup and dietary changes. (In my case no wheat, green veg and more water.) So if you do find something I'll be interested too. I've looked at that lrp one a few times.

Splat Oh that's interesting. I'll have a look at Dr A's Instagram.

JDSTER · 14/08/2019 22:26

How’s your eyes looking Sallie?

mintmagnummm · 15/08/2019 05:38

Thank you Awd

LaVieilleHarpie · 15/08/2019 11:10

Hey, has anyone tried Sunday Riley?

I'm after reviews of Good Genes, Luna oil and CEO Glow serum especially - I am feeling a strong urge to treat myself, I'm not entirely happy with my current routine.

SallieSallow · 15/08/2019 13:30

I haven't LaVieille think some others here have though, not sure what specifically.

JDSTER my crows feet have pretty much disappeared, which is great but wasn't my main issue as I'm bothered about drooping rather than wrinkles. I think my eyelids just under my brows have lifted but lower eyelids still droopy - not sure if they will lift over the next week or so if that's it. I'm back in a couple of weeks and she did say I could have a top up for free so will see what happens. Very pleased indeed with my mouth though, will definitely keep having that done as and when needed.

mintmagnummm · 16/08/2019 06:03

I've noticed I'm looking very old and tired under my eyes! It's really bothering me, what can I do?

botemp · 16/08/2019 10:37

Awd, haven't tried that LRP eye cream but going by the ingredients I'd give it a pass if you're prone to millia as it does look like a rich unctuous cream. Not sure if there's anything there to help with dark circles. Not many creams that will tbh, retinol specific eye creams can help thicken skin with time and therefore help with the appearance but it'll still be somewhat visible in all likelihood. Think Dr Dray did a video on other ingredients to look out for in eye creams a while back.

I'm not an insta user either but do occasionally look up Dr A. though I don't think the medium always suits her verbosity on a subject so sometimes it's difficult to follow on the initial post in the comments. I do appreciate how transparent she is, even with a comment response she'll disclose any sort of relation she's had with the company. She seems like a good sort but in general I'm wary with all these medical professionals who are so actively courting the SM limelight. I think Dr Sam was on TV before doing the SM thing so there definitely seems to be this drive to be known publicly, it's beyond a bit of good PR for your practice. Still think the information given is solid but since she's launched her brand I don't think I've watched a video of hers at all as it all seems very engineered click bait.

LaVielle, I tried good genes but it was very irritating, that was a good few years ago. As I understand it they are no longer allowed to sell that concentration/pH combo in Europe and Canada so it's no longer the same beloved product. The Luna Oil was a PR farce and those that bought into the hype came out very disappointed. The CEO was similar but most had already been burnt by the Luna oil experience. It's a vitamin c derivative and a quite expensive one at that so not something I'd put my money towards unless I really couldn't get on with vitamin c in L-AA form (but I'd buy the one from Medik8 instead).

AwdBovril · 16/08/2019 11:17

Ah ok, thanks, Botemp. I do get occasional milia so I will give that a miss. So far I've managed to remove them myself with a needle (sterilised in surgical spirit). Probably wouldn't recommend it though, I have extremely short sight & consequently very good close up vision. Hence no damage... yet.
Any recommendations for a fairly inexpensive eye cream that would suit my combination / slightly oily, somewhat sensitive, slightly dehydrated skin? Grin Preferably without niacinamide or wheatgerm oil as I've not got on well with them in the past. And, in a tube rather than a pot? I know... I want the moon on a stick. Or should I just use my regular face cream on the area, watered down (I used to do this). Or nothing? I have the LRP retinol eye cream but don't use it often as I mostly use my BR P50 in the evening.

I use Instagram, but only for beautiful inspirational healthy food pictures & recipes, & a couple of fitness vloggers I follow. Mostly the food... my stomach actually just gurgled as I'm thinking about it.

botemp · 16/08/2019 11:27

Bioderma Sensibio eye contour gel should tick most of those boxes. It's got caffeine in it to constrict skin and puffiness and a lot of HA in it for hydration, suitable for sensitive skin, some light reflective mumbo jumbo that will help with the appearance of dark circles (to an extent) and it's a light gel format so should keep the millia at bay. And it's in a tube, not sure on price but it's around €10 here.

OP posts:
AwdBovril · 16/08/2019 12:43

Thanks, Botemp, that looks just the thing. Curses upon the crashing pound, though, as it's £15 here... bloody Boris bloody Johnson & his red bus. AngryAngrySad
I wonder if BR P50 will still be affordable or even obtainable after Brexit, or should I buy now while the large (250ml) bottle is still under £100. I wonder how long a bottle lasts, & if it would suffer if I froze it.

I just bought some Salux show cloths. A 10 pack that I could ill afford to buy all at once. However the price had gone up by at least a couple of pounds in the 3 months I was considering whether to buy them so I thought, just do it. They aren't getting any cheaper.

botemp · 16/08/2019 12:49

If you need anything else it's cheap on EPP think it was free shipping over £29 to the UK? Though I can't seem to get it to the UK version, I just have the choice of French or Italian, not sure if Brexit has struck here too, if prematurely Shock

OP posts:
AwdBovril · 16/08/2019 13:44

Very possibly, Bo. It seems to be a monumental crapfest that has no limits.

SallieSallow · 16/08/2019 16:06

I panicked then about EPP Shock but you just need to put .co.uk on the end instead of .com to get the British one - phew! Might do a bit stock up shortly though as who knows what might happen after October Sad

botemp · 16/08/2019 17:04

Phew, let's hope the prices are not inflated on the co.uk site. Probably worth keeping track of what's made in the UK. I was thinking the Alex Steinherr at Primark stuff I saw on offer was all made in the UK, the normal priced items were the ones made in Korea, so Brexit may be at play for that here. I doubt there will be mass shortages on skincare but it may be difficult to access some things for the first few months in a no deal scenario so it would be helpful to know who makes their stuff in the UK. I can only think of brands like face theory, bravura London, etc. Not many of us use them though. Is the Superdrug own brand also made in the UK?

JDSTER · 16/08/2019 22:52

I’m glad you’re pleased overall Sallie and that two week appointment a good chance to reassess. I was at a meeting this week and noticed someone’s eyebrows that were really high and lifted. Note to self to never go that far!

Those of you who use BR P50, did you use W first and if so what difference did the upgrade make?

@EnidButton I gave DH LRP cicaplast to use on a bit of eczema on his hand that flares from time to time. He’s really impressed with it. I don’t know why I didn’t think to offer it before, as I very rarely have use for it.

EnidButton · 17/08/2019 00:44

JD Oh good! That's interesting to know too. About it helping eczema. Glad it helped.

SallieSallow · 17/08/2019 10:57

Bo Superdrug are a British owned company but I couldn’t find any information about where the products are manufactured.

With regards to Brexit, I’m hoping that as most European brands already sell to the US/internationally outside of the EU that they’ll have mechanisms in place for everything to still be available post Brexit, though unfortunately due to the rapidly falling value of the £ prices for us here in the U.K. will go up.

JDSTER my eyebrows have definitely lifted but hopefully not too far, and I have so little in the way of brows anyway that I doubt it’s noticeable. The nurse did say to me that she’s always very careful not to lift the tails of the brows too much as it gives a Dr Spock effect, I said not an issue in my case as I have no tails Grin but she still avoided it as I think it’s just good practice.

One thing I have noticed in the last couple of days is that my forehead is now incredibly smooth Shock I didn’t have much in my forehead, same as you JDSTER it was just to give that bit of lift to the eye area. But as I didn’t have any frown lines or forehead wrinkles/lines to start with I’m worried it’s made it a bit too flawless looking now. Luckily I have a full fringe!

I just went straight to P50, never used any BR products of any kind before. I’ve been using it undiluted every second night with no issues but I had been using PC and CosRx BHA regularly over the last few months and I’m not currently using any Ret/tret products.

botemp · 17/08/2019 11:31

JDSTER, P50W upgrade to to P50 differences to me were pore tightening was a lot more noticeable, it did feel stronger somehow though I didn't have much evidence for it in terms of inflammation or peeling. Skin tighter somewhat and smoother with a natural glow, the W has a bit of that but not as pronounced as the full strength. Full strength is also a lot more efficient with a rogue spot, will take the swelling down in hours for me where I wasn't sure the W was aiding in much.

Cicaplast is good for eczema as it has some healing and skin barrier repair ingredients in it but to keep it at bay the Eucerin urea hand cream is most effective for me, I also use the cleansing oil hand wash of theirs.

Sallie, I don't foresee any shortages but it may just take longer to get to you at an inflated price. If I was in the UK regardless of WA or no deal my main concern would be the loss of EU standards. The US has a very short list of banned ingredients, is far laxer with allowed concentration, different rules for labeling, as well as higher % of allowed foreign objects like rat hair in things. Something like MI in leave on products is likely to cause a lot of allergic reactions unwittingly. The UK producers will likely continue to abide by EU standards when that is their main market but an influx of Asian and US products (and US versions of known products from big manufactures like Johnson & Johnson may have slightly altered formulation) are going to need a good combing through the INCIs. Also, the EU ban on animal welfare may change the cruelty free status of some brands.

AwdBovril · 17/08/2019 11:46

JDSTER - I used a mini bottle of the P50W, then went onto the full P50. With the P50W, I didn't get any of the tingling at all, & although it made some improvement, it wasn't very impressive, given the price. When I switched to the P50, I definitely noticed the tingling (although no stinging, unless I was careless & wiped with the cotton wool, instead of patting). There was a definite improvement, relative to the P50W. TBH, I don't use cotton pads to apply it now - I use a thermal water spray lightly all over my face & nack, then put a few drops of the P50 in my hands & immediately, gently pat & smooth it in, while my face is still damp. I use less as there is none wasted on the cotton, I don't have to pay for cotton pads (not terribly environmentally friendly, TBH), & no risk of accidental irritation. I would say I have moderately sensitive, or at least easily dehydrated skin - I react to quite a few things. But I'm fine with this. Definitely a lot more natural glow, less blemishes, the few I get tend to remain under the skin & then heal (so no nasty marks). And my pores seem a little better, too.

Update on the Salux cloths... I feel like my life is complete! Grin

SallieSallow · 17/08/2019 13:02

I only get very mild tingling with P50 and I’ve been swiping/wiping (gently) rather than patting. I might move to your method now AWD as I’m not a fan of cotton wool pads either.

I’ve found it really good so far for seeing off spots before they properly emerge and I do think my skin looks a bit fresher and slightly less pore-y. Nothing miraculous or life changing in my case but nothing ever really is for me Grin

Does anyone use P50 in a routine with one of the stronger OTC retinols or with tret? I’d like to re-introduce tret in autumn, & obviously wouldn’t use them both on the same night but wondering how much to space them out or even if they’ll be compatible at all, I couldn’t use PC BHA in the same routine as tret, even just using it once a week made me really peely/flakey.

Bo good point about INCIs changing (and rat hair Shock) and I’ll definitely keep an eye on that. I don’t use any Asian products (have ditched Cosrx BHA for P50) and only cerave from the US, the INCI is the currently the same here as in the US but I’ll double check after October. Hope I can still get frezyderm without it costing a fortune, I’ve got a decent supply in but might order some more just in case.

JDSTER · 17/08/2019 13:57

Thanks Bo sallie awd you’ve definitely convinced me the switch to P50 will be worthwhile. Pore tightening definitely an aim. sallie I alternate P50w with Medik8 crystal retinal which I’ve just finished. I’ve got some differin I’m using up but won’t be repurchasing. Both fine with the W formula, used about twice a week.

Thanks bo for Eucerin handcream rec too
