🐌 Fantastic Skincare: Shitting About All Day Discussing Co Dictionary

Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17 Thread 18

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Belated. Thank you bo I overdid the cake and things as we went on a picnic and then a meal out and then a roast dinner the next day. So it's an avocado and salmon kind of week this week. I usually get birthday dread but actually enjoyed this one.

Dark flannels t is then I think. Did not knowing that microfibres cloths released plastic. Food for thought.
I remove my eye makeup with micellar water, then use oil based cleanser and then cleansing lotion,so they can get dirty, and stained and yucky in appearance. I try to get the worst removed with soap at the sink but seems dark flannels are the way to go.
Good luck with exam results

EnidButton · 20/08/2019 17:59

Thanks Sallie Smile

Half my white flannels are looking slightly past their best so might buy a few more and demote the older ones to household cleaning cloths. Dark coloured ones would make so much more sense but all my sheets and towels are white so it's easier laundry wise.

SallieSallow · 21/08/2019 16:04

Most of my knickers & socks are dark so I shove them in with those - possibly a mumsnet no no as I’ve seen people on here get funny about it washing anything else with underwear but I like to live dangerously 🤷🏻‍♀️

Look fantastic have got 25% off la Roche posay if anyone needs to stock up.

EnidButton · 22/08/2019 00:45

That wouldn't bother me Sallie MN has some strange ideas. (I was going to say "when it comes to laundry" but I think a full stop will do Grin.) I use a non-scented washing powder on anything that's going near my face because of the mild/moderate acne I used to have (before discovering this thread). I think it's helped. Everything else is normal powder and conditioner. Sorry, that was so boring. Blush

Just a heads up, TK Maxx seem to be getting their Autumn/Winter stock in which means Christmas gifts, so the chances of them having some good brands in the beauty section are good atm.

EnidButton · 22/08/2019 00:46

Thanks Sallie I do need more cleanser.

CJDoesTheJackal · 22/08/2019 05:34

Belated bday wishes Enid.

Bo I think I did try muslins (your memory of me is better than mine Blush but I think I found them too harsh. I now use a pack of 10 small flannels, different colours, and they're great. I tend to use finger tips as much as possible but the flannels are great for night time cleansing the neck and decolletage (gently). It means I don't splash water all over my top.

botemp · 22/08/2019 10:03

I don't know Sallie, all the hygiene purists on here always just leave me wondering what exactly they're up to. There was this video circulating about this man and poo but I'll probably be banned as the poo troll if I repeat it but it really puts the super hygienists into perspective.

I remember someone reading another poster on here to filth about how absolutely disgusting they were for wearing panty hose/opaques more than once. Provided you don't have sweaty feet and wear underwear I'm not sure how that would lead to the next ebola outbreak.

I'm not sure what socks and panties would ever do to other washing in a washing machine either unless you did some really weird stuff with them Confused

I vaguely remember the muslin phase CJ, but I thought you had switched to some bamboo flannels after that, must have misremembered. I'll switch to bamboo when these flannels are past it, seems to be the most environmentally friendly choice.

OP posts:
CJDoesTheJackal · 23/08/2019 12:40

You're right Bo! My mini flannels are bamboo. I've just checked the label. They're these:-

www.cheekywipes.com/cloth-baby-wipes/wipes-rbam.html

Has anyone bought DE Vit C lately? I just bought one (about my fifth!) from Space NK. On opening it's quite dark. Orange rather than the usual pale yellow. I wonder if it's changed or if it's oxidised already?!

SallieSallow · 23/08/2019 12:54

ooh I like the sound of those wipes CJ - the flannels I've got get a bit hard over time, which I don't mind but are maybe a bit too harsh, these look nice and gentle.

I have never used Vit C (or anything else) from DE so can't help there. It does sound like it might have oxidised though.

Bo and Enid I'm sure I've read posts saying socks and knickers should be washed separately especially from anything face related, presume to avoid transfer of bum and feet germs Grin MN seems quite extreme to me hygiene wise but then again I don't have kids or pets and very, very rarely get hot or sweaty and never have smelly feet.

botemp · 23/08/2019 13:05

Hurray, my memory hasn't abandoned me yet Halo they're a really good price, personally I prefer something a bit bigger though, no real need, just preference.

I'd pull them up on it, Pupsie. Definitely sounds like oxidisation. DE used to colour it with dye but a lot of people complained that it meant they were unable to tell whether it had oxidised until it had really gone too far and they removed it. So unless they've decided to go back on that decision (check the INCI) then I'd fear I'd been saddled with old stock or they're a victim of the heat wave potentially.

Speaking of Vit C, with uncertainty around Brexit I was on the lookout for an EU supplier for Timeless (other options were Amazon US and Yesstyle but chances of old stock on both were high) and found timelessha.eu which I believe is the same company as the timeless UK site (it's shipping from the UK) but probably set up specifically for Brexit and incorporated elsewhere and probably a shipment facility in place in the EU if necessary in the future. Also have the 10% off permanently, shipping is the same price but it came in a lot cheaper in Euros as the price of the Vit C is the same in EUR as GBP and no extra conversion costs, so if anyone else outside the UK is reliant on the timeless vit c, hope it's of help. I only ordered this morning but is shipped out already, will report back when it arrives.

I only have one item left on my from UK list that I can't source elsewhere, fermented cod liver oil from a small UK company. I doubt they have the funds to set up a EU branch from the get go and it's not something I can stock up too much as it has a relatively short shelf life. I'm just hoping a EU company will start selling it here and save me the import hassle.

Tsn, forgot to add previously that Kirei station also carry your preferred sunscreen at close to old prices, think they even sell the larger pump size and they do free shipping with no minimum.

I grew up with a 'germs are good for you' attitude, Sallie. I think science actually backs that up for the most part. Food is a different thing of course, although both grandmothers ignore(d) use by dates and merely think them suggestions, and the one still alive has only ever had a hip surgery and will be a 100 in a few years.

OP posts:
AwdBovril · 23/08/2019 19:47

I also use Cheeky Wipes, when I'm in the shower. I've had mine a couple of years now, & they're still lovely & soft, & not falling apart. For just washing at the sink, I use muslin cloths (specifically, John Lewis muslins as they're really nice). I need something a bit bigger as I wash my neck, shoulders etc - a little bamboo cloth isn't enough. I get a fresh one every couple of uses. Much more eco-friendly than disposable wipes. I wash all my towels & bedding stuff separately from clothes, & do a pre-wash cycle with bio powder in (usually use non-bio). I don't like all the antibacterial stuff people use now for laundry though.

SallieSallow · 23/08/2019 21:51

Think I might have to invest in some cheeky wipes!

Just placed an order on look fantastic, they’ve got good discounts on Vichy, Bioderma and Cerave as well as LRP.

SallieSallow · 23/08/2019 21:57

I grew up in a ‘germs are good’ household too Bo and was very glad of it when I lived in a country with not great hygiene or sanitation. Most westerners got sick (D&V) but I never did.

CJDoesTheJackal · 24/08/2019 16:13

Just back from Space NK. The use by date on the DE Vit C was July 2019! They swapped in and are going to write to HQ. The dates are only printed on the bottles, not on the individual boxes. I'll tag them on IG too.

YesQueen · 24/08/2019 20:51

I use grey flannels and wash everything together. I'm immunocompromised and it works fine for me!

botemp · 26/08/2019 09:23

That's crap CJ, out of curiosity what is the expiration date on the one you swapped it to? I know Timeless have a 3 month expiration once produced (not refrigerated) wondering what the expiration is like on DE. Did SpaceNK offer any sort of compensation or just an apology? I saw they were doing a big 100% satisfaction guaranteed spiel on their latest newsletter, wondering what that really entails.

I've never gotten travelers sickness abroad either Sallie, always accredited it to drinking coca cola for the first day or so rather than bottled water.

OP posts:
CJDoesTheJackal · 26/08/2019 11:24

It's April Bo. No compensation which didn't bother me hugely. I get that DE should stamp the boxes. Space NK shouldn't have to take every bottle out to check it. The sample was also out of date, and a whole lot of stock too.

I said to them customers will have bought the product and think a) it's meant to be that colour and b) it's not making a difference.

Will it do any harm if it's oxidised, or just do nothing?

Also, I bought some Neostrata retinol in Canada. I tried it 2 or 3 years ago and it was too strong. I've been using P&M Superstar Oil since then but wanted to try the NS again. I've been buffering it with my Cerave Night cream and so far so good.

botemp · 27/08/2019 09:33

Considering they launched in the UK in October that would indicate they're not selling a lot of DE and this was stock from the initial launch. Not that you'll be in the EU for long but I'm pretty certain use by dates have to be printed on the box according to EU standards.

I wouldn't have expected monetary compensation CJ but something like a deluxe sample of choice as you did have to make the trip back and forth to them. And, yes oxidised vit c is pretty harmful, it'll do the opposite of what it's supposed to, thus causing premature ageing (potentially). It also 'tans' the skin, similarly to a self tanner but blotchy and it'll be difficult to remove. Not helpful if you got Vit C to tackle pigmentation.

It is indeed worrisome for other people indeed, the graphic orange on the bottle will have many thinking it's supposed to be orange.

Is it the NAG retinol, that one is meant to be very good.

OP posts:
CJDoesTheJackal · 27/08/2019 12:05

I've just posted on Space NK's IG account, tagging DE, making the above points Bo. Thanks.

Yes, it's the NAG one. Fingers crossed. After 6 weeks if no adverse effects I will start to reduce the buffering. Fingers crossed. I'm using the P&M oil on my forearms and hands at night.

CJDoesTheJackal · 27/08/2019 12:08

I didn't see the glycolic body lotion in the US Bo. We were only there for 2 days and lost a large part of the first day crossing the border Hmm.

Is this a good deal or do you reckon I should wait until my DH next visits?

www.amazon.co.uk/Alpha-Skin-Care-Fragrance-Free-Paraben-Free/dp/B01FX1FAH8/ref=sr_1_1?s=gateway&keywords=glycolic+body+lotion&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1566904027&sr=8-1

botemp · 27/08/2019 12:13

I order it through Amazon us, CJ inclusive of shipping, taxes, etc. it comes in at around €26 total and it gets here within a week, so that looks like double the price. The pricier Neostrata (50ml less product though) is probably cheaper than that Amazon UK price Hmm

I've seen facetheory also has a glycolic body lotion (9% but lower pH so comparable strength) but it has fragrance and it's in a jar, used to be in a pump but it's a bit thick, I gather.

CJDoesTheJackal · 27/08/2019 12:41

Thanks Bo.
