Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17 Thread 18

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

@Tsmummy08 I use Bioderma as my normal micellar water but you were asking for cheaper ones for festivals hence my suggestions.

Bo fortunately I've started with bottled lemon juice so I will never know how much better the freshly squeezed version is Grin. The Waitrose bottled sicilian lemon tastes pretty good plus there is so much sugar involved I'm sure it must mask any funny tastes.

mintmagnummm · 25/07/2019 20:31

Sallie that's hilarious 😂

mintmagnummm · 25/07/2019 20:32

I'm still using the neostrata sheer physical spf 50, ordered another bottle too. Using it alone in the am in this heat!

YesQueen · 27/07/2019 13:45

More Yope conditioner as I love it so, good things Manuka honey cleanser, born this way concealer and this too faced palette

That scattered arrangement would drive me mad. The colours look lovely though. Queen been meaning to ask, by any chance have you tried one of those microwaveable bonnets for deep conditioning? Or have reliable sources singing their praises? Apparently they're good for hydrating low porosity hair, despite being a bit of a frizz ball my hair did look massively better in the humid heat these past few days so hoping this will do similar, though not sure which one to buy, all the recommended ones are in the US.

YesQueen · 28/07/2019 22:56

@botemp I haven't but I've heard good things, there was one on a UK site...
I use a plastic shower cap and then wrap my head in a towel in an attempt to keep heat in (low porosity too)

Here, hot heads they're called Grin

botemp · 29/07/2019 06:45

Thanks Queen, that was the exact one I was looking for but could only find it in the US. Although I'm now left wondering if I need the childrens one or not Blush

I've done the plastic shower cap and hot towel as well it does seem to work well but the towel does lose heat quickly. Also seen actual steamers on Amazon like you'd have in a salon but I don't think my face would appreciate that.

Dropped down to twice a week BHA and the cheek pimples have gone, still got a very spotty Chin and forehead but I'll give it a while longer and see if things balance themselves out. Fingers crossed

SallieSallow · 29/07/2019 18:57

Those bonnets look interesting, I used to do shower cap and towel too but have moved to leave in only conditioners now, wash out ones will make my hair softer but tend to give me pouffiness and static.

Out yes twice a week is sensible for BHA at least initially, I’m using mine every night but it’s a weaker one (Cosrx) and my skin is used to it. Have you added anything else to your routine along with the BHA as too much too soon in terms of new products can unsettle your skin.

I’ve got flakey eyelids at the moment, can’t think what’s causing it as I’m very careful about what I use on or near my eyes.

Outtheforest · 30/07/2019 07:52

sallie I've only added the BHA so definitely that.
Do you have allergies? One year I got awful dry flakes eyes with hay fever a pharmacist told me to use a salt water solution and bathe them morning and night with cotton wool and it worked a treat.

SallieSallow · 30/07/2019 18:55

Out yes I do get allergies but my eyelids don’t usually get flaky except in winter when it’s very cold, I was working somewhere with super cold a/c blasting out last week though so could be that. I’ll try a salt water solution as I’ve got some posh pink Himalayan salt I can use Grin

YesQueen · 01/08/2019 20:50

I caved and bought this. So pretty!

Queen I love that! Send pics when you try it please 😊

YesQueen · 02/08/2019 10:19

I will. Thinking of using the white bit separately as a highlight and the whole lot swirled together as blush

YesQueen · 02/08/2019 11:59

L'Oréal voluminous mascara try today. Can add loads and it doesn't clump Grin

Taking my yearly pilgrimage to the UK next week, fully intending to stock pile and in desperate need of new makeup any recommendations? I have 11 hours to kill in Dubai airport so plenty of time to browse duty free.

TantricTwist · 02/08/2019 18:35

@YesQueen that mascara looks really good on your lashes. I'm using my CYO foundation everyday and still love it thanks to you. That YSL face palette looks gorgeous, what a lovely product to own.

I decided to go down the cheapo mascara route, to experiment, from Primark. I have the gold 3D lash effect £2.50 which I'll use as an emergency work one (havent tried it yet) but am currently wearing the silver Ps Wonder lash £3 for the first time to see if it smudges or not. It hasn't clumped and it's left my lashes nice and thick so it's a winner so far. I didn't curl my lashes first and it does nothing to curl them if that's what you're after.

I've been and still am using the Eyeko lash alert mascara which I love and has never smudged on me which is a frikking miracle but I'm fed up spending £ on mascaras.

mintmagnummm · 02/08/2019 19:13

Queen that mascara looks lovely on you! What have u got on your undereyes??

cloud1183 · 02/08/2019 19:22

I invested in an LED mask and although I don’t want to talk too soon, it’s dried up 2 ugly spots I had and has made my skin looks nice. Has anybody else tried LED?

YesQueen · 02/08/2019 19:32

@mintmagnummm only a bit of translucent powder, was a base free day today!

Very pretty Queen, in tempted to ask if you're using those mermaid brushes of yours with it so it matches the packaging Wink

Out, I've become rather obsessed with Periccone MD's no makeup makeup line. Especially the bronzer, it melts into the skin beautifully and was ideal with the hot weather as it did not budge. It has an SPF in it as well but I doubt that's doing much as it's such a thin consistency. If you're in London definitely check out Surratt (though SpaceNK may stock it in other cities) as I've yet to go wrong with that brand.

Tant, all the Eyeko mascaras are tubing ones if iirc which would explain their budge proof abilities. Their own site often does a lot of good offers, it's worth signing up to their newsletter for. Speaking of Primark, I was there the other day and it looks like they're dumping the Alex Steinherr line, or at least a large part of it as almost all of it was on sale. They finally had the cleansing oil I'd been on the lookout for but it had leaked so I didn't purchase.

Cloud, there isn't much backing for LED at home use aside from the blue light therapy for acne. It kills off the germs so that's helpful, as it takes down the inflammation pretty quickly but I believe for the other claims like anti ageing and pigmentation you really need more powerful ones that only dermatologists have access too. Which one did you buy?

Ello, there's really no point comparing skin tone for sun exposure capability as it's very individual and determined by more than that. So putting that aside, yes, fruit acids can make more photosensitive but it's very minor. Bar soap is another possible culprit, it's high pH so can disrupt the acid barrier and make it compromised which would lower your defenses against UV damage. I wouldn't use bar soap anywhere but pits and around genital area (and under boobs if necessary). Compromised barrier + fruit acids could have been the perfect storm, or you could simply have been unlucky, difficult to say. Get some aloe on you, it'll cool and help heal.
