Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17 Thread 18

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Botemo- I got one from Hangsun off ebay as it was very cheap and I didn’t want to invest in anything expensive before I tried. It has red, blue and orange and I’ve spent 10 mins on each for the past week so 30mins per night. I don’t really have any wrinkles/fine lines just yet but have acne and nasty cysts on my chin during the time of the month.

I had one particularly large one before I used the mask and found that it got rid of it super quick and my skin doesn’t seem so oily. I’m interested to see how things go when I’m due my monthly breakout next time

Ello, cleansing oil for the body. Bioderma, avene, eucerin, LRP all do one. I like the Avene Xeracalm, the Bioderma is well liked by a couple on here by I've forgotten the exact name.

Cloud, the only thing I would warn with the cheaper ones from China that you have no way of knowing whether you the LEDs used are UV safe. So just to be cautious and minimise risk of it being a premature ageing and pigmentation breeding ground I'd always apply an active antioxidant serum before use.

Bioderma atoderm shower oil. Only thing that cured my stinging calves post shaving. If I do a final wash with the oil there's no sensitivity or burning sensation. I use it all over too. (Apart from pits and bits. Normal body wash stuff there.) It's a subtle scent and not drying at all. I'm a big fan.

SallieSallow · 03/08/2019 13:52

I second Bioderma atoderm shower oil, along with their moisturising spray it’s pretty much cured my dry, itchy skin issues. I use a tea tree soap for pits and bits (and feet) and the oil everywhere else, like Enid says it’s great to use for shaving your legs too.

Out what sort of makeup do you use or are interested in? I’d recommend hourglass ambient light powders, also their blushers and bronzers, NARS pure radiance tinted moisturiser and/or bareminerals complexion rescue and DHC mascara.

I’m seeing my hairdresser next Saturday for a trim, she’d mentioned to me before that two friends of hers (both nurses) had set up their own practice offering Botox, fillers etc. They’re at her premises offering consultations on Saturday so I’ve booked one Shock I’ve checked their website and reviews which are all good (though they are a newish business so not that many yet) but my hairdresser uses them and looks great and they’ve been in touch with me already asking various questions about and let me know that the consultation is free with no pressure/obligation.

EnidButton · 03/08/2019 23:09

Exciting Sallie! I'm this close to having a bit done. Just deciding where to go. Let us know how it goes and if you decide to go for it.
Tea tree soap is such a good idea. Especially in this weather.

I still haven't tried the new body moisturiser I got. It's been too hot so been using scrubs and shower oil instead. Felt nice on my hands though.

Anyone know when the A/W makeup collections start being released. I'm thinking ahead. Olli do you know please? I've seen an incredible looking lipstick from Mac that'll be in their Holiday collection. I'm just so ready for gorgeous Autumn and Winter colours.

TantricTwist · 04/08/2019 12:12

So I wore my Benefit Bad Gal Bang mascara yesterday and although it does annoyingly smudge, I do love how it curls and lengthens my lashes in a way that the cheapo Primark, Eyeko or any other mascara doesn't.

So what I need now is a tubing mascara that lengthens and curls.

Does this exist?

SallieSallow · 04/08/2019 21:01

Tant I find DHC tubing mascara lengthens/ separates/defines lashes well but doesn’t do much for lift or curl and it’s not a dramatic look at all if that’s what you’re after. I think Eyeko have some that are meant to curl but I’m not fond of the brushes on their mascaras and find the consistency a bit claggy.

My holy grail mascara for length and curl was benefit roller lash, I adored that stuff for years when all of a sudden it started smudging really badly on me and I’ve never been able to use it since Sad

Enid I’ll update after next Saturday, no idea what (if anything) I’ll have done, my main issue is my droopy mouth but I wouldn’t say no to having something done round my eyes as well, will see what they recommend.

SallieSallow · 04/08/2019 22:15

I’m living on the edge at the moment - as well as booking the consultation I’ve just ordered some P50 after swithering about it for months! £69 with shipping, it had better Do Something Grin

JDSTER · 04/08/2019 22:26

I’m living on the edge too Sallie. I only went and had a smidge of Botox about 10 days ago Grin.

I had it around my eyes as the droop was getting on my nerves and has done for about a year. I went for a consultation and just went for it at the time. The difference is fairly subtle but I definitely look more awake first thing in the morning. I’m back on Wednesday for my two week check up.

Any questions, ask away.

SallieSallow · 04/08/2019 22:37

That’s exactly what I want for my eyes JDSTER and might well have done on Saturday! Did you have any bruising and can you wear makeup afterwards? as I’m going out on Saturday night. And when do you notice the difference? Not sure what they’ll suggest for my droopy mouth, guess I’ll just have to wait and see - though it might have drooped past the point of no return now Sad

TantricTwist · 04/08/2019 23:55

@SallieSallow thanks for the mascara tips. I swear my lashes are shorter than they ever used to be, is this an age thing I wonder.

I should just go back to using my eyelash curlers and stick to cheapo mascara for now. I still have my benefit and eyeko one to use up first though, plus actually an unopened Rimmel one I've never used and a mini Lancome Hypnose drama one thats been lying unopened in my make up case. They'll keep me going for a while.

Grin at you 2 living on the edge @SallieSallow and @JDSTER
I won't be holding back on the botox when I get to that point.

EnidButton · 05/08/2019 00:02

JD Has it changed the position of your eyebrows? That's what I'm most curious about. I don't think I really understand what it does to the muscles other then freeze them so one can't frown.

Outtheforest · 05/08/2019 16:31

I dont wear alot of makeup, generally like to invest in a good mascara and light foundation. Thinking of looking for a eyeshadow pallet and maybe a bronzer as now im applying spf I find I'm missing my usual suntan.
botemp is that the case for all bar soap? I recently switched to a locally produced natural bar soap brand, I'd assumed the natural bit meant it was good for my skin. Haven't noticed any extra sun sensitivity but the sun is so strong here I dont want to risk any unseen damage.

botemp · 05/08/2019 17:10

No, not all bar soap has a high pH although technically I think they're not considered officially soap anymore Confused they just look like soap but are essentially a solid cleansing balm/oil. IIRC Dove and Simple are unscented pH balanced ones, the ones marketed at sensitive skin. When it's for the face they're often marketed as cleansing bars, Drunk Elephant do a couple. It's rare though that a soap bar indicates a pH so I stand by the general pits and bits area and cleansing oil anywhere else.

Ok I’ve taken a photo today with a cropped image from a few months ago which shows the ‘heaviness’ I think in my eyelid that was bothering me. No bruising, just tiny pinpricks from the needle but it was gone in a day. It’s lifted my eyebrows slightly. I understand that if you inject below the tail of the eyebrow that can make the eyebrow ‘jump up’ possibly a bit too much. My Botox was in between eyebrows, forehead area and crows feet area. The Botox doing its thing in the forehead muscles raises the eyebrows.

Ooh I can see a big difference there JDSTER but not in an ‘obvious you’ve had something done’ way if that makes sense! I’d be well happy with that. And your eyes are a gorgeous colour!

Out I would recommend DHC mascara, it’s quite subtle and non-dramatic but that might be good for you as sounds like you’re not a heavy makeup wearer. Also good as it’s a tubing mascara so won’t run in the heat and should be fine to swim in too. Comes off with warm water and gentle pressure from your hand or a cloth.

Light foundation - either NARS pure radiance tinted moisturiser or bare minerals complexion rescue.

Bronzer - hourglass or if you can’t find it bare minerals and it cosmetics do good ones too. I’m not pale though so probably best test in case they’re too dark for you. I think Bo mentioned a bronzer too from Dr Perricone.

Eyeshadows - YesQueen is your woman for those Grin I rarely wear eyeshadow anymore but I used to like Tarte palettes.

TantricTwist · 05/08/2019 19:16

@JDSTER I can definitely see the difference. My eyes are like your before photo only more hooded.

JDSTER · 05/08/2019 19:26

Thanks Sallie and Tant. I’ve never posted a photo before but felt it my public duty on this thread 🐌 Grin

out I agree with sallie’s rec for NARS tinted moisturiser. I don’t use much eyeshadow but mascara I like Benefit roller lash. I’m using Lancôme hypnose at the moment but not blown away by it to be honest. Mascara is a funny one. Any thread on here about favourite mascara throws up lots of different recommendations. I think mascara love is a very individual thing depending on the lashes you've got and what you want to achieve with it.

sallie I meant to ask where you got P50 from? Did you get original ‘full strength’? I’m coming to the end of P50w and not sure whether to upgrade.

SallieSallow · 05/08/2019 19:46

I’ll try to remember to take some ‘befores’ too JDSTER I case I get anything done on Saturday.

I got the P50 from here
embassyofbeauty.co.uk/
You have to register and do a skin analysis, they then recommend a (massively expensive!) routine but you can ignore that and just order the P50.

EnidButton · 05/08/2019 20:52

That looks great JD! Exactly the effect I'm hoping for if I go for it.

botemp · 06/08/2019 09:20

Should I just title the next thread 'Is Everyone Having Botox Without Me?' Wink

I'm quite curious what hideously expensive routine they recommended to you, Sally. Was it all BR or a whole assortment of expensive products?

Tant wrt to tubing mascaras there are a few Japanese ones that promises volume and length from Heroine but IME tubing mascaras just don't build volume like non tubers. I usually just use a normal one and then top it with another tuber that's pretty minimal, in my case the Eyeko skinny. Ones that still bleed out, I'll sandwich between two layers of tubing mascara.

Re: mascaras, I just bought the Primark False Lash Queen Mascara (£3) on a whim the other day and I must say, I'm incredibly impressed. The photo on the box shows dreadful, thick, spidery lashes but I tried it with just one coat and it separated my lashes beautifully with no clumping. But my ultimate mascara tip is to always use a lash curler first - for me it makes all the difference. I only recently learnt that you're supposed to press down multiple times, and I find that gives a really decent, long lasting curl.

Does anyone have any tips for foundation? I'm proficient at most basic make-up e.g. blending eye shadows, making lipstick stay on, winged liner etc. But I just cannot for the life of me get my foundation to look natural. I've tried everything from cheapo L'Oreal ones, to cult classics like the Hourglass stick foundation and Charlotte Tilbury Magic foundation and nothing looks right. Whatever I do it looks obvious that I'm wearing foundation. FWIW, I've tried applying with hands, a brush, a beauty blender.

botemp · 06/08/2019 11:03

Hmm seperated with no clumping sounds right up my alley, I'll have to see if my Primark carries it. Is it also a tubing mascara?

Have you tried blasting your eyelash curler a with a blow drier yet? That usually gets the nicest results for me. I don't like to pump too much as I am convinced it weakens the hairs and you often end up cutting into the rubber pad which then turns your curler into an eyelash guillotine Shock I just hold for a longer period of time and shift it upwards so it sits at 90° and it works the same for me.

The only way I get foundation looking skin like is if I use two colours, one slightly darker and one slightly lighter than skin tone and do reverse contouring, so darker shade on the light points and vice versa, it then looks even but still has dimension. I've only ever used thinner consistency foundations, think the higher coverage ones always will have a slight artificial feel to them unless you sheer them out to reveal the true texture of the skin. Tissue wiped down over the top of the nose when you're done can also can help a bit as that's the most noticeable spot for foundation.

OP posts:
purplefig · 06/08/2019 11:29

@botemp I don't think it's a tubing mascara but I had absolutely no flaking (that bit really surprised me), but it came of easily enough with my usual cleanser (cerave hydrating cleanser). For £3 it's got to be worth a go! Ooooo great tip about trying the dryer on the curler - I'll give that a go tomorrow. I think my problem with foundation is I hate the cakey look of high coverage foundations, but when I wear foundation (rarely!) I want it to cover up everything. Can't really win that one.
