Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17 Thread 18

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

PIE is like PIH but more difficult to tackle, red rather than brownish. I suffer with them as well but there isn't really much beyond time and using mineral SPF you can do, mine usually become PIH over time and then they seem to respond to the usual suspects but PIE doesn't respond to much. You can get a specific laser for them but not sure if that's okay to do whilst pregnant and I think there was some study with silicon plasters but that's not really a day to day solution. Azelaic may help and is safe to use in pregnancy, don't think it magically fixes it but it does something as opposed to nothing but there's no data backing it up.

@botemp that's depressing but really good to know, thanks for sharing. I've been a bit slack with sunscreen so I'll keep that up. Then I guess it's a case of time + avoiding / managing any spots that crop up. I've got a good system involving hydrocolloid patches (it's fine, I work from home 😳) but again, I've been slack.

TantricTwist · 18/07/2019 21:56

@purplefig I’m so glad you love the Nivea

Outtheforest · 19/07/2019 06:40

Finally got my BHA and have been using once a day for the last 4 days, my skin doesn't seem to be irritated by it but I've developed tiny red pimples across my cheeks which is an unusual place for me to break out. Is this likely purging? And if so how long should I give it.

purplefig · 19/07/2019 08:34

@TantricTwist I absolutely love it! I still can't stop stroking my legs like an absolute narcissist 12 hrs later.

@Outtheforest I'm not an expert by any means, but as I understand BHA and AHA are one of the few things that can cause purging. That said, I wouldn't use it daily as that could well be aggravating your skin. If I were you I'd dial the usage right back to a couple of times a week and build up from there.

TantricTwist · 19/07/2019 15:02

Yes I agree with @purplefig

@Outtheforest Cut down on the BHA and yes it's likely to be purging.

What are you cleansing your skin wih before hand and what are you applying after the BHA? I find that cleansing balms tend to cause pimples on my cheeks, so I limit my use of them.

Outtheforest · 19/07/2019 16:20

Thanks, I have clearly gotten a but keen, I'll do three times a week instead for now. I'm cleansing with LRP effaclar and using the effaclar duo moisturizer both of which I have used for quite a few months with no problem so dont think its them. Only thing in the entire routine to change has been adding the BHA

YesQueen · 19/07/2019 18:34

Little haul from TK Maxx today. The Yope conditioner smells amazing (the oriental garden one)

YesQueen that's a nice little collection I might have to pop down to my local TKMaxx to see what they have. I bought some lovely bar soaps there the other week from Tuscany which I can give as presents or keep for myself, plus a lovely top Grin

EnidButton · 23/07/2019 20:15

Just saying hello before you slip off my 'threads I'm on'.

Glamglow has given me a red nose again. I think everyone will just think I've had too much sun. Grin

No other skincare things to report. It's too hot for body moisturiser but I do plan on using some Elemis body scrub tomorrow and painting my toenails with Essie Watermelon. 💅🏻

Hope those of you further South are surviving the heat. It's hot up North but looks sweltering lower down the country. I'm bracing myself with magnums for Thursday's heat and hoping for the promised storm tomorrow. ☔️

botemp · 23/07/2019 20:36

Pfft it was 30° today and it'll be 34° and 36° over the next few days. No storms coming, it'll cool down a bit but still high temps. And ALL the bloody ice cream is sold out in supermarkets Angry I can only blame myself and normally avoiding sugar, I really should be better prepared.

SPF has been holding up well though. I've actually discovered that the Neostrata SPF works a lot better if you pile it on rather than layer it as I usually do. Still wouldn't be too keen to RP but not as bad as I initially reported.

SallieSallow · 23/07/2019 20:44

I’m loving this weather 😎 it’s not super hot up here though, I’m in the North East this week for work.

I used the ameliorate exfoliant at the weekend, didn’t think it did anything really but my skin isn’t dry at the moment anyway, I should probably save it for winter. I’ve got the mitt with me on my travels and it seems ok, it’s handy as cuts down time in the shower as you use it on dry skin before you get in.

cad186 · 23/07/2019 21:08

I bought the essie watermelon the other day, it's a lovely colour. I also bought the Nivea body lotion but havent tried it yet. This thread is bad for my bank balance!!

ChampooPapi · 23/07/2019 21:16

Ladies I'm looking for a oil to use at night (will be back on retinol come autumn) that is good for pigmentation.

Lots of googling throws up all the usual, as in so much!

Was thinking an organic vitamin e oil, roship oil, or vitamin c oil?

SallieSallow · 24/07/2019 07:31

Champoo I think maybe a vit C oil? Though I’ve never used one (use a Vit c serum in the morning) & I’m not very well up on oils to be honest hopefully someone more knowledgeable will be along later.

botemp · 24/07/2019 07:47

Champoo as far as I'm aware there are no oils to tackle pigmentation Confused You may find some traditional anti pigmentation ingredients (like vit c mentioned above) in a carrier oil but they'll be lipid soluble derivatives rather than the gold standard ingredient with all the research behind it. Rosehip would be the only oil that can maybe do something as it's got Vit A in it, provided it is extracted in a certain way, CO2 extracted iirc (like Pai do, possibly trilogy too) as that retains more of the active ingredients, but in all honesty whilst it may vaguely do something to the eye it's going to be diddly squat and it's definitely not going to tackle pigmentation.

I had a look at the Nivea INCI, it contains a fair amount of alcohol, I assume that makes it absorb quickly but is it not drying long term?

cloud1183 · 24/07/2019 09:55

I’ve just discovered rosehip oil, niacinamide and acid toners. My skin has never looked better and I only wish I knew about this before so I didn’t spend years having lifeless, dry skin through use of simple products

mintmagnummm · 24/07/2019 19:26

I am literally melting ☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️

TantricTwist · 24/07/2019 19:42

I'm surviving the heat down south, luckily I've been on a strict calorie restricted diet which has made a fantastic difference for me in this heat esp at work.

Fortunately I bought some fans in the New Year in case we had another heat wave after they sold out last Summer. They are currently on full blast and made a big difference esp in the evenings.

Bo I was given an old ice cream maker and have been making lots of lemon sorbet which is easy peasy to make and delicious. You could make it without the machine quite easily.

botemp · 24/07/2019 20:05

Tant I actually have a state of the art Italian ice cream maker that's so fancy you don't need to freeze any parts ahead of time, just switch it on pour it in and churn 🙈 little use when you want something now though . You have reminded me that I love making lemon granita in it and eating it for breakfast Blush

If I'm up for juicing lemons tomorrow I'll consider making some again. The only annoying thing about home made ice cream is that you have to eat it within a couple of days, which potentially sounds easy enough but I've often ended up tossing things out.

OP posts:
SallieSallow · 24/07/2019 20:34

Mint you should change your name to MeltedMagnum Grin

The site I’m working from at the moment is freezing as the ac is on full blast, it’s nice to get outside for a warm up. I’m very cold blooded though and don’t really feel the heat. My hair is less happy with the humidity, I’ve got the most terrible frizz going on that even the airwrap is struggling to control.

Tsmummy08 · 24/07/2019 22:00

Another one here loving the weather :) Saliie I'm cold-blooded too but the sea was warm enough here (Brighton) that even I got in yesterday - and probably will tomorrow!

I'm looking for your high street micellar water recommendations for festival purposes - I'd like something cheap and cheerful but effective. I've tried the Neutrogena blue one but it's not that great. Thanks :)

TantricTwist · 25/07/2019 00:38

Bo I just buy bottles of lemon juice for my lemon sorbet much easier at short notice than squeezing it, although it is the season for delicious Sicilian lemons of which I have a few bottles of Waitrose sicilian lemon juice.

Tsmummy08 I guess the garnier one will do with the pink lid. I used to use that a lot and also the Simple one.

I'm a bit confused as to whether my skin wants extra or less moisturiser at night in this heat.

Daytime it's just serum no moituriser and SPF.

Evening it's confused Confused
I'm Confused

JDSTER · 25/07/2019 09:25

Sallie hope you’re enjoying your time in the North East.

TSmummy I like Bioderma sensibio which they do in a small bottle for travel or Garnier one with pink lid as Tant mentioned, which is easier to come by.

I finished my last bottle of Drunk Elephant Vit C a few weeks ago. I’m using up NIOD copper serum, which I had in a stash. I also found an Ordinary Vit C (the 23% one). The texture is so bad I can’t believe I ever use to use it. I’m going to try the Timeless one next.

botemp · 25/07/2019 09:40

Tant, if I'm going to make the effort I may as well squeeze a few lemons. I don't like the taste of bottled lemon juice, it lacks the zingy freshness and has a weird metallic taste to me.

Tan, not tried it myself but the Superdrug B. Pure one is meant to be good and costs next to nothing. Probably an unwieldy size though.
