Any Ideas For 40th Birthday Present?!

Hi Ladies. It's my SIL 40th birthday this weekend and we're struggling with ideas for presents. We had thought of a really nice handbag but then my MIL said someone else had got her one! I can think of loads of things I would like but my SIL is a tricky one - she doesn't really wear jewellery, doesn't appreciate gorgous smellies, candles, pampering products etc. We're drawing a blank - any ideas much appreciated! Thanks.

A subscription to a fab mag? A voucher for her favourite restaurant? A voucher for a photo session? A beautiful book but one you are unlikely to buy yourself normally? A gorgeous photo frame? OK - have run out of superlatives . TBH, I often buy special presents in shops, where they can be exchanged and make a point of telling the person.

What about these gorgeous slippers - www.glamourpussslippers.co.uk/

Would kill for a pair myself!

How much do you wnt to spend??

GroaningGameGirly · 23/07/2007 16:24

Tiffany keyrings are my preferred gift at the moment. Nice to have but not something you'd spend the money on yourself IMO.

i'm almost 40 and don't do gorgeous smellies, candles etcs. I would also hate to get a handbag. This is what i would like next birthday
*photo album with photos from all my life
*an ecletic collection of music (some opera, some churchy stuff, some thrash metal, some folk etc + but must include something that i would not chose my self
*egyptian cotton sheets
*a promise to send me an interesting , thought provoking and quirky book every few months for the next year
*an important photo scaled up and put onto canvas
*to be cooked for

does this help
*

Thanks so much for all these great ideas. I've lots of options to discuss with the DH now and hopefully we can agree on one. Would like the slippers, tiffany key ring and egyptian cotton sheets myself!!!
Thank you all!

I'm having the same dilemma myself for a friend's 40th. Am considering this what do you think?

purplemonkeydishwasher · 23/07/2007 19:37

a nice piece of art

TheDuchessOfFawkesBride · 23/07/2007 19:42

If she doesn't like smellies, candles, jewellery or pampering of any kind, then get a new basket for her dog

I bought my SIL £40 of vouchers for her local theatre. Could do similar with dinner at a restaurant or garden centre vouchers?

Or a case of wine. Set of photo frames from the White Company? Which reminds me, what I'd love for any present is one of their 9-tog Superking Platinum Hungarian Goose Down Duvets but they cost £650...

fridayschild · 23/07/2007 19:52

for my 40th my brother and sister got together to pay for a studio session at a local photographers for me, DH, and the DSs

and I got a book from one of my mates I was really pleased with - the Lonely Planet Guide to Nowhere

Buffybye · 23/07/2007 20:36

I bought my friend a lovely tree for her garden for her 40th and just got a lovely tree in a planter for mine. My sister bought my mother a gorgeous rose for a special birthday - There are so many varieties that you can often find them with apt names! I asked for some woodstock windchimes for my 40th. Admitedly my SIL didnt get what I was on about but she got them anyway and I love them. Every time the wind blows they ring out the most beautiful chime. There are lots of sizes and prices, plus they are supposed to ward off evil spirits - which can not be a bad thing can it!

deaconblue · 23/07/2007 20:49

I thought about a rose for my friend but there isn't one with her name. You can buy a gift which is unnamed rose seeds that you can then register with your chosen name. Not sure if that would be naff though
