I hate Tuberose - so why do a lot of my favourite perfume have it in??

A lot of the classics like Femme and Madam Rochas, but also Oscar de la Renta. I keep going back to them but Tuberose is quite strident and annoying!

Sounds as if you like chypres, but not the tuberose. Try Lanvin Arpege or Magie Noire. (I'm a perfume blogger so happy to answer questions)

Oh missbattleaxe I need to hijack this thread and ask you a question (sorry deathraystare 😬) ‘My’ favourite perfume and the only one I’ve used since forever (Armani Mania) has been discontinued for a few years.. I’ve been sourcing old stock through Amazon since then but it’s getting ever more expensive as stocks decline.. can you recommend an alternative please? 😊

Deathraystare · 05/06/2019 09:33

Yes Missbattleaxe, deffo a Chypre girl and yes those two you mention were some of my very first!!!

I just hadn't realised how many I have used have Tuberose in them. Which is odd as I hate it so much. I think something was always a little bit 'off' but was not sure what!

HappyGirlNow - a dupe of that is on the perfume parlour site. Not sure how good a dupe - see if there are any reviews. Of course, it is called something slightly different.

Great thank you deathraystare, I’ll keep an eye on that coming back on stock 😊 Is there any other mainstream perfume that has a similar smell/notes do you know?

Auldspinster · 05/06/2019 12:09

Y by YSL is another nice chypre.

Housewife2010 · 05/06/2019 12:53

I dislike Tuberose too and also Jasmine. Fragrantica.com is an excellent website and lists the notes in the fragrances you are searching for, the reviews are great and it also shows other scents which you may like.

MrsJackman1 · 05/06/2019 14:38

Is tuberose that odd slightly "off" undertone in perfumes that I can sometimes smell? I'm certain the perfumes themselves aren't off so was wondering what it is that often seems to be used as a base.

Puppylucky · 05/06/2019 17:01

In my experience the off note can also be jasmine - some scents have an indolic jasmine note which smells really pungent - I hate it!

MissBattleaxe · 07/06/2019 08:17

HappyGirlNow happy to help! According to Fragrantica The Body Shop Love Etc is similar to Armani Mania, which I haven't actually smelled myself.

Tuberose can smell, by turns, of creamy coconut or medicinal white flowers ( a bit like lilies) or a bit like celery. In my experience, it's rarely the same twice and like jasmine, can wear many disguises.

Happy I don't know if you've tried this? The reviews are a mixed bag but everything I've bought from PP has been an exact dupe and the oils are so long lasting. Worth a punt as so cheap.
