What sort of top to wear with paper bag shorts?

Jacqattacq · 30/05/2019 19:40

I bought some ‘paperbag’ waist shorts the other day and they are really flattering on - not too short and nice and loose around the thigh and I like how the waist nips in.

BUT...I can’t work out what sort of top you’re supposed to wear with them. I am a size 12 hourglass for reference. Cropped = no. They just don’t work with my proportions somehow. Baggy = looks terrible even when it’s a baggy their that has been knotted. Cami top = possible but the shorts are linen and the only cami I have is silky and lacy so looks wrong. Tight = I suspect this is what you’re supposed to wear with them but I hate wearing tight tops because it enhances my flab. I never wear (for example) a tight vest top because under arm fat seems to spills out (never an issue in other types of top and yes my bra fits perfectly) and you
Can see where there is excess fat. Not sure why this is a problem for me as I’m only a 12 and I go to the gym a lot so it’s not like I’m particularly chubby but since I’ve had kids, tight tops are not my friend.

Any suggestions? Or are the shorts going back?

What about a regular T-shirt tucked in? I’d prob get a well fitted one (not a massive loose one). As I think the point of shorts like that is to show off the waist line pleating/detail as it looks nice.

Slim fit rather than tight. Skimming rather than hugging.

I'm a 12 and have wobbly bits too!

A girl at work has paper bag trousers in khaki & wears them with a slim cream t-shirt tucked in. I’m always jealous when she wears them - it looks awesome

TotheletterofthelawTHELETTER · 30/05/2019 20:29

A bodysuit?

PeachMelba78 · 30/05/2019 20:39

Tshirt or shell top, skimming but not too tight.

GlitterPixie · 30/05/2019 20:49

I had to google paper bag shorts - I’ve discovered they are the shorts I bought last summer and never wore because I can’t figure out what kind of top to put with them

Rooftree · 30/05/2019 20:50

I wear trousers like this a lot.
I wear T-shirts, shell top or shirts but always fitted and always tucked in

gubbsywubbsy · 30/05/2019 21:23

Tight / fitted vest or t shirt Is the only top that would work .

Jacqattacq · 30/05/2019 22:29

High five to glitterpixie for being equally shit at tops.

Ok, where does one buy these mystical tops that skim but do not cling. I have been on a quest for such items for years and have never found any that do the job.

The high waist of the trousers do the work op. There’s much less of your stomach for the top to cling to!

I just always buy a top or T-shirt in a size that fits but isn’t tight though, I can’t really be any more specific than that, sorry

Jacqattacq · 30/05/2019 22:35

It’s more back fat that I have an issue with - while I have a tummy, it is relatively flat really but the back view is grim.

I bought some paper bag trousers recently and, after much hunting, found the perfect t shirt to go with them in Dorothy Perkins. Is slim but not tight, and a really good short sleeve cut on the angle so it’s super flattering. And best of all, the white one isn’t even a bit see though!

SolitudeAtAltitude · 30/05/2019 22:43

I am also looking for these tops, fitted but not in any way tight

I thought jigsaw had what I wanted but they were just not right for me...

I'd buy half a dozen if I could find that magical that is slightly fitted without clinging!

Jacqattacq · 30/05/2019 22:46

Artesia that looks like it would be perfect...except for the neckline. I have massive boobs so need a v or scoop neck (or at the very least a lower neckline than that one)

I like a fine-knit jumper tucked into my paper-bag trousers, but it’s not really the weather! I think camis work too, but you need a nice not too flowy one - and if you find one let me know, because I got one years ago and have never found another source of non-tent-shaped silky camis!

NannyRed · 30/05/2019 22:55

I have some paper bag shorts with a cute little jacket too, I wear a vest top with mine. Tucked in.
