Ok, so I helped to produce a feature film which has its premiere next month - it's a very low-budget movie, so there's no red carpet, but there'll be photographs, probably some minor celebrities, and some industry professionals who I will have to meet and greet.

And because I'm 5'0", am a size 18, and have children and lots of other responsibilities, I usually look like the person I am - a middle aged, overweight, stressed working mother. I do try to look after myself a bit - I've been on a VLCD for a while and lost a stone, cut out caffeine, gone veggie, drinking lots of water, use serum/day cream/eye cream/hair serum/babyliss big hair or straighteners.

So this premiere is not really a big deal, but I just don't want to look like I know NOTHING about fashion. So the photos are what I've bought to wear - do you think it's going to work?

And if so, do you think I should wear silver or bronze make-up/nails or go 'traditional Hollywood'? I saw a photo of myself taken yesterday where I'd put on quite a lot of make-up but my features still kind of disappeared and I looked very non-descript, so I think I need a bit of 'zhuzhing'.

oh i love that outfit OP. I think i would get some silver nails, and visit a boots no7 makeup counter (book an appointment online) and they will do your makeup for you xx

OfMe · 26/05/2019 07:25

thanks, sleep - definitely going for silver or chrome nails rather than sparkly. Can't use boots any more though as I'm boycotting them for not paying their tax, but i'm scouring lisa eldridge videos for make-up tips - I might try debenhams and see if they'll give me some samples to try if I give them a bit of social media promo in exchange! Anyone tried this with success?

oh god, no-one else then? Is it bad?

Love your outfit!
Could you go neutral makeup with bright red lips? I think that would work well with your outfit

locketrocket · 26/05/2019 14:17

Actually op, where did you get the outfit from? 😊

Watchingthetelly · 26/05/2019 14:19

Lovely outfit! Have you got a Charlotte Tilbury counter near you? If so you can book to have make up done there for around £50 which is redeemable against products. They do a surprisingly great job in my experience.

OfMe · 26/05/2019 14:20

ooh, i hadn't thought of that, mainly because my lips aren't very big, but my eyes are very blue (think Liz Taylor) so I was going to go for a silver/smokey eye to go with the nails and the bag, but I'm not sure now! Glad you like it though - it's one of those things where I just wasn't sure if it might have been seen as old-fashioned. I did choose the mock-croc mules based on ss19 trends, though!

Watchingthetelly · 26/05/2019 14:20

No to red lips!! So garish and harsh unless you are young, chiseled and gorgeous IMO

Watchingthetelly · 26/05/2019 14:21

Also a red lip would be a bit gothy with that outfit

OfMe · 26/05/2019 14:23

Lol - for my shame it's a rotita outfit. I was really worried as after I ordered it I came on here and saw some awful reviews, but the jumpsuit's arrived, and it's really lovely fitting - just quite a cheap zip that's quite sticky, so I'm going to get the costume designer for the film to replace the zip and shorted the trousers and skirty bit. (Handy having worked with a skilled crew sometimes!)
I've been watching Lisa Eldridge videos, so I reckon I'm getting there on educating myself on how to do my own face, but I might splash out on a gel manicure.

Outfit is great. I know nothing about makeup but the more high end the more likely to get samples I think. Do you need anything like moisturizer or cleanser at the moment? Perfume? So you could buy something you need while getting free samples. I'm basing this advice on 10+ years ago when I was getting married - I went into Brown Thomas (high end dept store in Ireland) and went around to all the counters telling them what I wanted to look like (unmade up basically) and I got a fair whack of stuff without spending much.

I've had my make-up done at Chanel, Bare Minerals, Clarins and Clinique counters and a few others that I can't remember.

Hope you have a good time at the premiere!

OfMe · 26/05/2019 14:31

Aw, that's Nottonight. I'm glad there are people out there who don't think my taste sucks! DH is so chilled out about everything (he's a video editor) he's just going to rock up in a black jeans and a t-shirt (don't - I can't persuade him otherwise) and I know it's not a red carpet event, but it'll be the first time I'll be meeting some industry contacts in person, so I think I ought to at least give off an air that I can spot 'trends' iyswim. So much of the job is about forecasting what is going to be popular, whether it's cast/plots/locations etc., that I just don't think I can tip up in jeans and a t-shirt, even if it is a smart-casual affair!

Thanks Apile, I think I will hit the local dept store and see what I can wangle - I'm thinking the words 'cross-promotion on social media' might yield some results as well - I'm hoping to set some stuff up for the actors, so they can do something similar too. Might make us retail biatches, but if we both get something out of it, it should be worth it!

I would do chrome nails, smoky grey eye, nude lips and a messy updo

OfMe · 26/05/2019 18:37

ooh, I'm glad you said that Floating as that was exactly what I was intending to do! I was toying with the idea of doing the graduating nails thing (one black, one dark grey, one silver, one light grey and one white), but I think straight chrome will look a little less odd!

Awesome outfit, do you mind sharing where you got the jumpsuit, it rocks! Enjoy your special evening you'll look amazing!

OfMe · 26/05/2019 19:12

glad you like it, idolike! It came from Rotita.com, which I was a bit nervous about as soon as I ordered, but it turned out fine in the end!

OP posts:
idoliketobebesidethesea · 26/05/2019 19:33

It's stunning!!! Nicest thing I've seen in a long time, elegant but a bit edgy. You'll be the bomb with smoky eyes!

OfMe · 26/05/2019 19:47

hahaha - yeah, a short, fat bomb! :D It is difficult to know what to do when you have to strike a balance between classy enough for a premiere, but not quite Gala premiere! :D
I have just discovered the FeelUnique website though, which seems to have all the products I was going to buy from Superdrug, some from Debenhams, but all cheaper, so I just need to go and test them out and then I can order the right shade from there.

Your outfit is lovely and the jumpsuit is beautiful! Absolutely love it!

MrsPear · 27/05/2019 09:02

Outfit is lovely - if it was me I would book a hair and makeup session at my hairdressers on the day but I’m terrible at both for big occassions. I would also get my nails and brows done professionally.

idoliketobebesidethesea · 27/05/2019 18:21

Hey @OfMe don't knock us short fat bombs...🤣😜

OfMe · 27/05/2019 21:53

Grinus short fat bombs rule, idolike!
I managed to score a bit today - walked into debs to get some foundation samples and not only are both the Estée Lauder and Lancôme sales assistants going to ask their area managers if we can arrange some kind of cross-promotion deal but the Lancôme assistant offered to do my makeup on the day either at the counter or if they don't allow it she'll take the day off and we'll do it at the office! So a free makeup artist! Grin(is that very bad of me?) in all fairness although I have a very impressive job title I have no actual money myself - it's complicated, but believe me, indie film doesn't pay very well at micro-budget levels! Grin
