All I have ever worn is mascara and now I'm mid-40s, everything seems to be going paler and it's as though my features are fading away IYSWIM! Very melodramatic but that's kind of how it feels.

I had a Groupon for a make-up class and it was the most awful experience - full of 14-year-olds with bulging make-up bags who wanted to perfect their contouring etc etc... I explained I just wanted to look a bit fresher and more like I used to look, not heavily made up, but came out looking like a Kardashian, really thick obvious eyebrows etc. Felt so silly and embarrassed.

Are there any YouTube tutorials or anything that will just teach me how to bring my features out a bit? I really have no idea where to start 😞

I recently had an individual makeup lesson with my lovely wedding makeup artist. Highly recommend it! She spent a couple of hours taking me through how to apply makeup from scratch, the order everything goes in, application techniques and product recommendations. I knew nothing about makeup before and now feel much more confident about doing it properly.

If you are near a Bobbie brown counter / shop they do 30 min 'how to tutorials' which are free.....I've done one and they were really good. I bought a couple of the products they used....but I was planning on that.

I learned to put on makeup at Trish McEvoy counters (they’re at Selfridges and Harvey Nics iirc) by doing the other side of my face for each step after they did the first. I don’t see why any makeup purveyor would refuse to do the same.

I do also love Hot & Flashy’s makeup videos - not so keen on the fashion shows (she looks fine in them but she is 5’7” and 8.5 stone - the clothes themselves are cheap and boring) - but the woman looks amazing for 56 and not a hint of mutton dressed as lamb. She’s also real about what’s happening as were aging and she doesn’t shrink from it.

Dowager crone?? That's so rude sorry, she's mid 40s not in her 80s

So sorry @Mimithemouse, but please don't be offended: the OP wasn't! If you actually read what I wrote, it was advice in avoiding the dowager crone look. Trust me, my MIL has it off to a fine art as, with dementia and failing sight, she doesn't see well enough but still insists on wearing lipstick. Now she's nearly 90, and a dowager, she buys lipstick that does her no favours, because her colour perception is compromised. She thinks she is buying a replacement lipstick for the one that suited her years ago, but because of her failing sight, she's buying a super-loud colour that an 18 year old woman of colour might struggle to pull off. And she can't see where she has missed her lips either.
