I have been invited to The Match at Winchester college.

This involves Chapel at 10, Lunch in marquee, afternoon tea in same

Dress code is Jacket and Tie - but what do i wear?

I'd thought a linen dress and jacket but is this formal enough?
do I need a hat / fascinator (surely not as not a wedding?)

Help! I have hardly any funds but have been invited by a chap I'd really like to impress...

(I am 50, 5'7", size 12, my lower legs are heavy, 'english rose' colouring

I think a dress and jacket will be fine. Hat not required but if it’s sunny given your English Rose complexion you might go for a summer hat to keep the sun off (im thinking a wide brimmed straw type affair).

If you google it, a couple of pictures come up. It doesn't look quite as formal as you might think?

I'd probably go floaty and/or floral myself although I think a linen dress would be lovely too but may be a bit crumply as there's a lot of sitting? Unless it's linen blend which tends to behave better.

And I agree re straw sun hat if weather requires, but otherwise I don't think necessary.

your choice sounds perfect with a big straw hat - although factor in the grass which you will be walking on, possibly sitting on if taking a picnic rug rather than chairs for watching the cricket ... so definitely wedges or flats. I'd say big sunglasses are a must!
