What do people wear to go out in these days?

I'm out this weekend with a group of friends for dinner, drinks and possibly dancing later. The thing is I'm in my early 40s and hardly ever go out like this these days. What do I wear, jeans, boots and a nice top? A dress? I have a couple of nice leather jackets (one dove grey, one black) and could wear one of these. I don't think I have a nice top or dress that would suit though, all my clothes are either work clothes or very casual.

I'm quite tall and a size 12-14 and fairly evenly proportioned. I don't mind fitted tops or dresses but don't particularly want to wear anything skimpy, though my arms are ok so I don't mind sleeveless. Shops I like are Oliver Bonas, H&M, Zara. Please could you help me with a few suggestions?

I have ash blonde hair, hazel eyes and light olive skin. I like most colours but usually avoid bright yellow and orange. I like pastel shades, black and grey in particular.

In my experience it's quite regional. Where will you be?

Liverpool super glam, Manchester more casual

I live in a large south coast town & there are 2 distinct going out looks - dress (eg Lipsy style) & heels or smart jeans & top (eg cami / Bardot) & heels.

I'm 42 & would wear either outfit but sometimes skip the heels in favour of smart flats.
I cover up with a smart biker jacket.

Btw I've bought going out tops in places like River Island, even Dorothy Perkins or Monsoon do nice camis.
My younger sister is thinner & gets nice tops in a mixture of places too including Zara.
