Help me find a dress for a funeral

DH just declared surprise at my plan to wear black Jeggings and a blouse to MILs funerals and thinks I should wear 'a nice dress' as he is wearing a suit and thinks we'll look mismatched Hmm can anyone help me find something? Funeral is Tuesday so low on time. I'm 31, size 16 and still carrying a 'mum tum' from having dd 6 months ago. 5'7 but more of a long body than long legs. I want a smartish black dress but not too OTT as I'm a jeans and trainers person usually. Will be wearing flat shoes. Budget max £50 but ideally less.

I’d agree with avoiding wearing leggings, maybe a smart black trouser though?

M&S

wrap dress

Boohoo

Polka dot

Black skirt or trousers with a black blouse or shirt, a black cardigan if it's cold and a black coat.

Black socks or tights and black shoes.

BigRedBoat · 08/05/2019 17:40

The only black trousers I own are jeggings/skinny jeans. I did try several pairs of 'office' type trousers in next and m&s today but none of them flattered my fat tum. I usually wear tighter trousers and a longer or floatier top to hide it, which is why I thought a dress might be a better option. I quite like the boohoo dress and the warehouse dress but not sure on that length with flat shoes?

What type of shoes do you have, OP? Flat sandals can be more forgiving of a dress, or flat boots?

Unless you're generous of boob then I'd go for a lower neckline

I'd go for a shift dress with tights and boots or a Mary Jane

Try the wrap dress from next it looks like it would suit a curvy figure. Have you got a black cardigan or jacket?

BigRedBoat · 08/05/2019 18:04

I have black ballet flats or silver strappy sandals but it's been quite cold here lately and it will be a burial so will be outside a bit. I have a black cardigan or a black floral patterned (but quite subtle) bomber jacket for warmth.

Here are a couple from John Lewis
Warehouse Snake print twist knot dress £30 (it's a grey pattern)

Fenn Wright Manson Raye dress reduced from £129 to £38

French Connection Dominica dress reduced from £125 to £37:50

John Lewis have got quite a few if you search for "up to £50"

Hope you find something suitable.

I think option 2 with the black Cardigan would be fine, option 1 is to short for a funeral.

gubbsywubbsy · 08/05/2019 20:32

2nd option with cardigan and black tights will be fine .

VanillaCoconutDove · 08/05/2019 20:35

2nd option but you really can’t take the cardigan off, even if it’s a hot day. Exposed shoulders would just feel off.

Oh I can see Option Two now!
Yes, I agree with Option Two, with cardigan, black tights and ballet flats.
You will look very nice and appropriately dressed.

stucknoue · 08/05/2019 20:52

Asda have tailored type trousers for £6, pair with a jacket. Alternatively buy a black or navy dress, doesn't have to be completely plain but subtle is key for funerals

stucknoue · 08/05/2019 20:55

Option 1 with 60 denier+ tights and black ballet flats would work as long as your dh approves!
