How to do curly girl method when I still need to brush my hair?!

I’m probably overthinking this, but my hair gets so matted and wasn’t sure how to start with the curly girl method, as think I would need to brush it in first instance. Does it make a difference to brush initially?

Thanks.

Just brush when wet, or before washing conditioner out

I am partly curly-girl, in that I co-wash with silicone free conditioner and use lots of leave in/ gel after washing but every morning I comb my hair with my fingers and sometimes with a brush. It makes it a bit frizzy but it gets so tangled if I don't, it's like a birds nest! The method is fantastic and it's made a huge difference to my hair, but not all of it works for me. I can't plop, I end up with a tangled mess.
Pick the bits that work for you and ignore the parts that don't.

Comb conditioner through and just gently finger comb any lugs before you refresh, each day. If your hair matts up easily, try a protein mask which should give it some weight and smooth the hair surface.

Get your hair soaking wet, pop on a deep conditioning hair mask and then use your fingers or a wide-toothed comb to separate the tangles.

It takes time, but it's way better than the breakage and frizz caused by brushing.

Sleeping in a bonnet will help you avoid flattening / tangling your hair overnight, or at the very least tying it in a ponytail on top of your head like a pineapple.

And then if you need to refresh your curls on day 2, using a water/leave-in conditioner mix in a spray to re-wet your hair will (again) save you having to 'brush' your hair to get tangles out.

I always brush after spraying with leave in conditioner

Really good tips, thank you.

This was my worry but I started finger combing my hair with deep conditioner and my hair is so much better I used to struggle to get a brush through before
