Hair colour and maintenance when you have very short hair?

I'm going for the chop, after years of wanting to, but not being brave enough.

I'm hoping for a Carey Mulligan type pixie type affair.

But I'm also planning to go a bit blonder. I'm naturally blonde, but it's getting darker as I get older.

I'm just wondering how difficult it is for them to colour short hair and how often it needs to be cut and coloured.

I will obviously ask my hairdresser too when she cuts it.

I used to have very short hair, pixie cut and always dyed my hair.

Cut every six weeks. Colour, well mine was to hide grey so as frequently. With dark blonde growing into a lighter dye you may get away with a lot longer between dyes.

Bert2e · 07/05/2019 19:15

Cut every 6 weeks and I lighten my own (mousey brown) hair myself when I think it needs doing which is probably every 6 weeks. I king of self highlights with the lightening stuff I use so I don't have obvious regrowth.

Thanks both!

I hadn't thought of DIY, as assumed it would be too tricky with short hair. Maybe some YouTube tutorials Smile.

I have a cut every 6 weeks, and a semi-permanent colour with every other cut. My hair is dark brown with a reddish hint and some grey . I don't get any visible regrowth as it just fades a little. I've tried box dyes at home and I'm rubbish at applying them: they just look 'blocky' and one-dimensional. The colour is like my natural colour, but better.

Thanks!

So far everyone has said six weeks between cuts, which is good news. I thought it might be more like four.

I have a pixie cut and find 5 weeks is long enough between cuts, after that it drives me mad

Cegbee · 07/05/2019 22:05

I have short hair, I get it cut every 6 weeks and if I have highlights I get a quarter head every 6 months ish. I have dark blonde hair but goes lighter in summer. It's so low maintenance, I can leave the highlights longer and it's so quick and easy in the mornings. I don't use a hair brush ever and I only dry it once in a blue moon. But then my hair is very straight and thick!

Mistakes with colour from DIY are really going to show. Think carefully before you do this with short hair. Every 6 weeks for both in my view.

SamBaileys · 07/05/2019 22:15

Yep, when I had a pixie cut I went every 6 weeks for cut and colour. I'm growing it out at the minute but I'm sick already! I'm at the hairdressers next week, the urge to go back to pixie is strong!

wizzler · 07/05/2019 22:23

I have short hair. Cut every 5 weeks, colour every 10.

bugeyedbarber · 07/05/2019 23:33

I've a peroxide pixie.

Cut and colour every 8-10 weeks. With very blonde hair I don't mind a bit of root, it's a look in itself.

Sometimes I skip the cut as my hairdresser is AMAZING and his cuts grow out into another cut rather than get messy so often I enjoy the cut so much I wait another 8 weeks.

When we played with colour some years ago, he'd do loads and loads of foils on my hair to get blended blonde - doable if your hairdresser has the skill.

If you're in London happy to recommend him.

CupOhTea · 08/05/2019 14:32

My cuts NEVER grow out into another cut ShockEnvy!

I think I'll end up going more frequently to keep on top of it. Unless your amazing hairdresser is in London or SE England?

Omg, I just saw he is! Yes please @bugeyedbarber.

@CupOhTea

This guy

The secret is that he's technically amazing and also having worked in fashion for many many years he doesn't just do the hair, he does the hair holistically as in: how does your hair work for you as a person. It makes a huge difference as he gives you a cut and colour that fits you not the model on the picture or a celebrity.

I went to see him on reccom 10 years ago. Never looked back.

I have a platinum pixie. Cut every 6 weeks and colour every 12 weeks. My roots are silver/grey so don't show too much.

IMHO you need a really good haircut if you go pixie. It needs to look as good on week 6 as it did when you left the salon. No Mushroom Head Grin
